The influence of left atrial size on cardiovascular events during antihypertensive treatment has not been reported previously from a long-term, prospective, randomized hypertension treatment trial. We recorded left atrial diameter by annual echocardiography and cardiovascular events in 881 hypertensive patients (41% women) with electrocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy aged 55 to 80 (mean: 66) years during a mean of 4.8 years of randomized losartan- or atenolol-based treatment in the Losartan Intervention for Endpoint Reduction in Hypertension Study.

Action of topical thyroid hormone analogue, triiodothyroacetic acid in reversing glucocorticoid-induced skin atrophy in humans.

The present study concerns the effect of topical treatment with a cream formulation of triiodothyroacetic acid (TRIAC) in comparison with a placebo preparation in producing a reversal of skin atrophy induced by long-term employment of topical glucocorticoid therapy in humans. A total of 39 patients with clinically verified skin atrophy due to long-term use of topical potent glucocorticoids were randomized. The changes in skin thickness, elastic fibers, and hyaluronic acid were evaluated by means of sonography and histology.

Reproducibility of computerized measurements of QT interval from multiple leads at rest and during exercise.

Background: Accurate measurement of the QT interval is important for diagnosing long QT syndrome (LQTS), and in research on determinants of ventricular repolarization time. We tested automatic analysis of QT intervals from multiple ECG leads on chest.

Methods: Eleven healthy volunteers and 10 genotyped LQTS patients were tested at rest and during exercise with a bicycle ergometer twice 1-31 months apart.

Ventricular repolarization and heart rate responses during cardiovascular autonomic function testing in LQT1 subtype of long QT syndrome.

Background: In the most prevalent LQT1 form of inherited long QT syndrome symptoms often occur during abrupt physical or emotional stress. Sympathetic stimulation aggravates repolarization abnormalities in experimental LQT1 models. We hypothesized that autonomic function tests might reveal the abnormal repolarization in asymptomatic LQT1 patients.

Electrocardiographic strain pattern and left ventricular diastolic function in hypertensive patients with left ventricular hypertrophy: the LIFE study.

Background: Whether the typical electrocardiographic (ECG) strain pattern (Strain, in leads V5 and/or V6), which is associated with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and LV systolic dysfunction, is independently associated with LV diastolic dysfunction is unknown.

Methods: The Losartan Intervention For Endpoint reduction in hypertension (LIFE) study enrolled hypertensive patients with ECG-LVH, of whom 10% underwent Doppler echocardiography. LV diastolic function measures included peak mitral E and A wave velocities and their ratio (E/A); E wave deceleration time (EDT); atrial filling fraction (AFF); and isovolumic relaxation time (IVRT).

Effects of beta-blocker therapy on ventricular repolarization documented by 24-h electrocardiography in patients with type 1 long-QT syndrome.

Objectives: We tested the hypothesis that in long-QT syndrome (LQT) type 1 (LQT1), beta-blocker therapy may decrease both the diurnal maximal T-wave peak to T-wave end interval (TPE) and the maximal ratio between late and early T-wave peak amplitude (T2/T1 ratio), which are electrocardiographic counterparts of transmural dispersion of repolarization (TDR) and early afterdepolarizations (EA), respectively.

Background: Ventricular repolarization duration and increased TDR and EAs are the three electrophysiological components generating the high risk of ventricular arrhythmias and sudden death in the inherited LQT. In the most prevalent LQT1 form of LQT, treatment with beta-blockers reduces serious arrhythmia events dramatically without a known influence on QT interval duration.

Magnetocardiographic assessment of healed myocardial infarction.

Background: We evaluated the capability of multichannel magnetocardiography (MCG) to detect healed myocardial infarction (MI).

Methods: Multichannel MCG over frontal chest was recorded at rest in 21 patients with healed MI, detected by cine- and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging, and in 26 healthy controls. Of the 21 MI patients, 11 had non-Q wave and 10 Q wave MIs.

Diagnostic imaging of carcinomas of the gallbladder and the bile ducts.

Early diagnosis and accurate staging of carcinomas of the gallbladder and the bile ducts are helpful in improving the prognosis. Ultrasonography (US), a useful initial modality when exploring the background of jaundice or non-specific gastrointestinal complaints, sensitively reveals bile duct obstruction in particular. In unclear cases, or if US suggests a resectable biliary malignancy, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with magnetic resonance cholangiography (MRC) and / or traditional cholangiography often provide additional information, and imaging-guided fine-needle biopsy or an endoscopic brush sample may verify the malignant nature of the tumor.

Performance of six bone collectors designed for dental implant surgery.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to perform an in vitro comparison of six bone collectors for harvesting of particulate bone.

Material And Methods: Four commercially available bone collectors (Frios, Osseous Coagulum Trap, ACE Autografter, Bone Trap) and two custom-designed models were tested. Three different in vitro tests were performed to determine the harvesting capabilities of the collectors.

Reductions in albuminuria and in electrocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy independently improve prognosis in hypertension: the LIFE study.

Background: In the Losartan Intervention For Endpoint reduction in hypertension (LIFE) study, reduced urine albumin/creatinine ratio (UACR) as well as regression of left ventricular hypertrophy have been associated with lower incidence of cardiovascular events. We wanted to investigate whether these prognostic improvements were independent.

Methods: In 6679 hypertensive patients included in the LIFE study, we measured UACR, left ventricular hypertrophy by electrocardiography, serum cholesterol, plasma glucose and blood pressure after 2 weeks of placebo treatment and again after 1 year of anti-hypertensive treatment with either an atenolol- or a losartan-based regimen.

Growing evidence has implicated members of the genus Enterovirus of the family Picornaviridae in the etiology of some cases of type 1 diabetes (T1D). To contribute to an understanding of the molecular determinants underlying this association, we determined the complete nucleotide sequence of a strain of echovirus 3 (E3), Human enterovirus B (HEV-B) species, isolated from an individual who soon after virus isolation developed autoantibodies characteristic of T1D. The individual has remained positive for over 6 years for tyrosine phosphatase-related IA-2 protein autoantibodies and islet cell autoantibodies, indicating an ongoing autoimmune process, although he has not yet developed clinical T1D.

Control RNA for RT-PCR applications was amplified by nucleic acid sequence based amplification (NASBA) using the NucliSens Basic Kit. This method was used to construct positive control RNA for enterovirus, insulin, and G-protein RT-PCR, and for interferon-alpha real-time RT-PCR. Epidemiologic studies have shown that serum level of adiponectin, a circulating protein secreted by adipocytes, predicts the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular events. Two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) at the adiponectin locus (T45G or G276T) of the adiponectin gene (APM1) have been associated with insulin resistance, low serum adiponectin levels, and diabetes. In the present study, the association of these polymorphisms with serum adiponectin level and insulin resistance-associated risk factors was investigated.

Effect of the Pro12Ala polymorphism of the PPARg2 gene on serum adiponectin changes.
