Exploring the Role of Sex and Gender in the Adoption of Assistive Technology in Dementia Care: A Scoping Review.

Given that women are disproportionately affected by dementia on several levels and assistive technology (AT) is increasingly used to manage the care of the growing number of people with dementia (PwD), there is an urgent need to understand the role of sex and gender regarding adoption of AT in dementia care. We conducted a scoping review following the framework of Arksey and O'Malley. All identified topics of sex and gender analysis (compatibility, attitude, usage, acceptance, access, usefulness, and well-being) were related to AT adoption, where the majority revealed sex and gender differences.

Enabling nurses' engagement in the design of healthcare technology - Core competencies and requirements: A qualitative study.

Background: Due to the globally increasing demand for care, innovation is important to maintain quality, safety, effectiveness, patient sensitivity, and outcome orientation. Health care technologies could be a solution to innovate, maintain, or improve the quality of care and simultaneously decrease nurses' workload. Currently, nurses are rarely involved in the design of health care technologies, mostly due to time constraints with clinical nursing responsibilities and limited exposure to technology and design disciplines.

Games to support teaching clinical reasoning in health professions education: a scoping review.

Introduction: Given the complexity of teaching clinical reasoning to (future) healthcare professionals, the utilization of serious games has become popular for supporting clinical reasoning education. This scoping review outlines games designed to support teaching clinical reasoning in health professions education, with a specific emphasis on their alignment with the 8-step clinical reasoning cycle and the reflective practice framework, fundamental for effective learning.

A systematic approach to quantify the influence of indoor environmental parameters on students' perceptions, responses, and short-term academic performance.

Several studies found that classrooms' indoor environmental quality (IEQ) can positively influence in-class activities. Understanding and quantifying the combined effect of four indoor environmental parameters, namely indoor air quality and thermal, acoustic, and lighting conditions on people is essential to create an optimal IEQ. Accordingly, a systematic approach was developed to study the effect of multiple IEQ parameters simultaneously.

Can Special Light Glasses Reduce Sleepiness and Improve Sleep of Nightshift Workers? A Placebo-Controlled Explorative Field Study.

Nightshift workers go against the natural sleep-wake rhythm. Light can shift the circadian clock but can also induce acute alertness. This placebo-controlled exploratory field study examined the effectiveness of light glasses to improve alertness while reducing the sleep complaints of hospital nurses working nightshifts.

Classrooms' indoor environmental conditions affecting the academic achievement of students and teachers in higher education: A systematic literature review.

This study reports the outcomes of a systematic literature review, which aims to determine the influence of four indoor environmental parameters - indoor air, thermal, acoustic, and lighting conditions -on the quality of teaching and learning and on students' academic achievement in schools for higher education, defined as education at a college or university. By applying the Cochrane Collaboration Method, relevant scientific evidence was identified by systematically searching in multiple databases. After the screening process, 21 publications of high relevance and quality were included.

Methods for Involving People Living with Dementia and Their Informal Carers as Co-Developers of Technological Solutions.

This paper reports on the research methods used in five different projects aimed at supporting people living with dementia in their everyday lives and activities of daily living. In all five projects, people living with dementia and their informal carers were involved. Applied methods ranged from passive involvement in the form of observations to very active involvement consisting of consultation rounds and think-aloud sessions.

Hospital Nurses' Self-Reported Confidence in Their Telehealth Competencies.

Background: The diffusion of telehealth into hospital care is still low, partially because of a lack of telehealth competence among nurses. In an earlier study, we reported on the knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) nurses require for the use of telehealth. The current study describes hospital nurses' confidence in possessing these telehealth KSAs.

Understanding Older People's Readiness for Receiving Telehealth: Mixed-Method Study.

Background: The Dutch Ministry of Health has formulated ambitious goals concerning the use of telehealth, leading to subsequent changes compared with the current health care situation, in which 93% of care is delivered face-to-face. Since most care is delivered to older people, the prospect of telehealth raises the question of whether this population is ready for this new way of receiving care. To study this, we created a theoretical framework consisting of 6 factors associated with older people's intention to use technology.

Method: In a cross-sectional survey among first-year nursing students, 23 common nursing activities and five telehealth nursing activities were presented along with three statements: "I consider this a core task of nursing," "I look forward to becoming trained in this task," and "I think I will do very well in performing this task.

Care Robot ZORA in Dutch Nursing Homes; An Evaluation Study.

From May 2016 - November 2016 the use of the ZORA robot was investigated in 15 long-term care facilities for older people. The ZORA robot is built as a social robot and used for pleasure and entertainment or to stimulate physical activities of the residents.

Efficacy of an mHealth intervention to stimulate physical activity in COPD patients after pulmonary rehabilitation.

Physical inactivity in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with poor health status and increased disease burden. The present study aims to test the efficacy of a previously developed mobile (m)Health intervention to improve or maintain physical activity in patients with COPD after pulmonary rehabilitation.A randomised controlled trial was performed in 32 physiotherapy practices in the Netherlands.

Technology use by older adults in the Netherlands and its associations with demographics and health outcomes.

Information and communications technology (ICT) has the potential to contribute to the quality of life of older adults. The aim of this study was to analyze the use of a broad array of ICT devices and services among Dutch older adults and to determine whether demographics and health outcomes are associated with this use. A questionnaire was dispensed among a group of Dutch older adults (≥65 years).

Competencies required for nursing telehealth activities: A Delphi-study.

Background: Telehealth is viewed as a major strategy to address the increasing demand for care and a shrinking care professional population. However, most nurses are not trained or are insufficiently trained to use these technologies effectively. Therefore, the potential of telehealth fails to reach full utilization.

A Mobile Phone App to Stimulate Daily Physical Activity in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Development, Feasibility, and Pilot Studies.

Background: Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) demonstrate reduced levels of daily physical activity (DPA) compared to healthy controls. This results in a higher risk of hospital admission and shorter survival. Performing regular DPA reduces these risks.

The influence of dry eye and office environment on visual functioning.

Environmental factors, such as high airflow and low relative humidity, are known to promote dry eye symptoms during reading tasks in office workers. These symptoms are associated with an adverse impact on daily activities at work. This study reports on the relationship between eye symptoms and environmental factors in 294 employees at one office location.

Development of the Environmental Observation scale for the Visual Impaired.

In order to raise awareness of professional care, an Environmental Observation scale for the Visual Impaired (EOVI) was developed. It is the purpose of this tool that professional caregivers learn to observe the nursing home environment and consequently propose and discuss potential changes in the short and long term. The mean time of filling out the EOVI in eight wards of a nursing home by two student researchers was 17 minutes (min mean 12, max mean 22,5).
