Cytology-based Cancer Surgery of the Head and Neck (CyCaS-HN): a prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial.

Purpose: Liquid-based cytology (LBC) is routinely used in gynecology but is rarely applied in head and neck oncology though many suspicious lesions are easily accessible. While several studies have evaluated the potential use of LBC for early detection and molecular characterization of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs), no study investigated its potential role in surgical management and therapy planning so far.

Methods: Twenty-five patients with cT1-2 squamous cell carcinomas of the oral cavity and oropharynx were prospectively enrolled in this study and were randomized to two treatment arms: in the control arm, a diagnostic panendoscopy with incisional biopsy was followed by a second operation with transoral tumor resection ± neck dissection and tracheostomy.

Here, we report experimental data at low projectile velocities near the Bragg peak, where the stopping force reaches its maximum.

Objectives: Against this background, a recommendation on the evaluation of selective contracts in patients with leg ulcers (LU) was developed and approved by the nationwide consensus conference.

Nanosecond formation of diamond and lonsdaleite by shock compression of graphite.

The shock-induced transition from graphite to diamond has been of great scientific and technological interest since the discovery of microscopic diamonds in remnants of explosively driven graphite. Furthermore, shock synthesis of diamond and lonsdaleite, a speculative hexagonal carbon polymorph with unique hardness, is expected to happen during violent meteor impacts. Here, we show unprecedented in situ X-ray diffraction measurements of diamond formation on nanosecond timescales by shock compression of pyrolytic as well as polycrystalline graphite to pressures from 19 GPa up to 228 GPa.

Wildlife planning for renewable energy must cope with the uncertainties of potential wildlife impacts. Unfortunately, the environmental policies which instigate renewable energy and those which protect wildlife are not coherently aligned-creating a green versus green dilemma. Thus, climate mitigation efforts trigger renewable energy development, but then face substantial barriers from biodiversity protection instruments and practices.

Questionnaire-based survey on structural quality of hospitals and nursing homes for the elderly, their staffing with infection control personal, and implementation of infection control measures in Germany.

From January to May 2012, 1,860 hospitals throughout Germany received a questionnaire encompassing 77 items. Additionally, 300 outpatient care services and 310 nursing homes for elderly in Berlin also received a 10-item questionnaire asking on their implemented infection control practices. All questionnaires were anonymous.

Investigation of insulin resistance in narcoleptic patients: dependent or independent of body mass index?

Background: Narcolepsy is a severe sleep-wake cycle disorder resulting in most cases from a lack of orexin, the energy balance-regulating hormone. Narcoleptic patients have been reported to suffer from an excess morbidity of Type 2 diabetes, even after correction for their often elevated body mass index.

Methods: To explore whether narcolepsy is specifically associated with a propensity to develop insulin resistance, we measured fasting glucose, insulin, and intact proinsulin levels in 43 narcoleptic patients and 47 controls matched for body mass index and age.

Epithelioid/mixed phenotype in gastrointestinal stromal tumors with KIT mutation from the stomach is associated with accelerated passage of late phases of the cell cycle and shorter disease-free survival.

In gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), the occurrence of an epithelioid/mixed phenotype has been correlated to PDGFRA mutations, gastric localization and favorable outcome. On the other hand, the prognostic significance of an epithelioid/mixed growth pattern occasionally observed in GISTs with KIT mutation is unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic significance of an epithelioid/mixed phenotype in correlation to anatomical localization, genotype, and expression of cell-cycle markers in a series of 116 primary GISTs with KIT mutation on a tissue microarray.

Recent discoveries indicate that the major pathophysiology is a loss of hypocretin (orexin) producing neurons due to immunologically mediated degeneration. Visfatin is a recently described proinflammatory adipokine.

Effect of litter nitrogen on decomposition and microbial biomass inSpartina alterniflora.

The effect on decomposition of 4 different levels of nitrogen in aerial tissue ofSpartina alterniflora, collected at the end of its growing season litter, was studied in laboratory percolators for 56 days at 20‡C. The CO2 evolution and the release of organic nitrogen and organic carbon were monitored. From these data, the ash-free dry weight (AFDW), nitrogen (N) content, and carbon∶nitrogen (C/N) ratio were calculated at various times during decomposition.
