Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Recent studies have shown that it is associated with atherosclerosis and left ventricular dysfunction markers. The aim of this study was to assess the cardiovascular effects of OSA depending on its severity, in patients without clinically diagnosed cardiovascular disease.

Aims: The prognostic value of baroreflex sensitivity in hypertensive patients has not much been studied.

Method: A cohort of 451 hypertensive patients without cardiovascular history was studied for an average of 6.2 +/- 2.

Background: Ambulatory blood pressure (BP) monitoring (ABPM) detects subjects with normal clinic but high ambulatory 24-h BP, that is, masked hypertension.

Methods: One hundred and thirty newly diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) patients, free of recognized cardiovascular disease were included (111 men, age = 48 +/- 1 years, BMI = 27.6 +/- 0.

Design: Prospective study.

Setting: Sleep Laboratory and Department of Cardiology of Grenoble University Hospital.

Background: We evaluated the clinical validity of the AGILIS ambulatory blood pressure monitor according to the European Society of Hypertension International Protocol.

Methods: The blood pressure (BP) was measured at the same arm by two certified observers using two mercury columns and a double stethoscope, then by the volunteer with the automatic device, these measurements were done seven times sequentially using 33 volunteers. For the randomization of the patient, one ABPM measure was compared to the mean of three manual measures.

Objective: High blood pressure is almost constant in renal transplant patients for whom dysautonomia is frequently described. The main objective of this study was to analyse the variations in blood pressure and heart rate recorded by ambulatory measurement during changes in position in renal transplant patients.

Methods: Thirty-nine non-diabetic renal transplant patients with a renal transplant functioning for more than a year, were selected at random.

Background: In newly diagnosed apnoeic patients without a history of hypertension, clinical hypertension is underdiagnosed in at least 40% of the cases. An increase in diastolic blood pressure is the most frequent pattern encountered.

Objective: To assess clinic and 24-h blood pressure, baroreflex sensitivity and left ventricular mass for identifying the prevalence, the type and the consequences of hypertension in newly diagnosed apnoeic patients.

Background: The Calor TensioSense Bras automatic blood pressure monitor has obtained European Union certification, but the clinical validity of this new oscillometric device when handled by lay subjects has yet to be evaluated.

Design: The design employed prospective and blinded blood pressure measurements and a validation procedure according to the criteria set out by the First International Consensus Conference on Self Blood Pressure Measurement (1999).

Methods: Thirty-three subjects were recruited, 11 in each of three strata of systolic blood pressure (<130, 130-160 and >160 mmHg).
