Am J Ophthalmol Case Rep
December 2020
Purpose: To report two cases of severe acute corneal hydrops that were resolved by intracameral gas injection alone.
Observations: Case 1 is a 27-year-old woman with bilateral severe keratoconus who developed sequential acute corneal hydrops in the right eye followed by the left eye that were each successfully treated using intracameral 20% sulfur hexafluoride gas injection. Case 2 is a 62-year-old man that developed a large fluid cleft beneath a pre-existing LASIK flap, which resolved with intracameral 20% sulfur hexafluoride gas injection without the need for corneal transplantation.
Purpose: To report an unusual presentation of posterior polymorphous corneal dystrophy (PPCD) associated with band keratopathy, iridocorneal adhesions, heterochromia, keratoconus, and confocal microscopic findings suggestive of iridocorneal endothelial syndrome.
Methods: Confocal microscopy, corneal topography, electroretinography, and genetic analysis were performed in the proband and his siblings.
Results: A 23-year-old man presented with decreased vision in both eyes over 9 months.
Purpose: To describe a patient with 2 ipsilateral supernumerary caruncles and to determine if they are predictive of associated abnormalities.
Design: Retrospective and interventional clinicopathologic study with a critical review of the literature over the past 100 years.
Methods: Assessment of clinical features and histopathologic findings in paraffin-embedded tissue sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin, Masson trichrome, periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) reaction with and without diastase, and Ziehl-Neelsen method.
Purpose: To compare tear cytokine and chemokine concentrations in asymptomatic control and Dysfunctional Tear syndrome (DTS) patients and determine the correlations between tear inflammatory mediators and clinical severity.
Design: Prospective observational cohort study.
Methods: Concentrations of epidermal growth factor (EGF), interleukin (IL)-1 alpha (1alpha), 1 beta (1beta), 6, 10, 12, and 13, interferon gamma (IFN-gamma), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), and chemokines: IL-8 (CXC); macrophage inflammatory protein-1 alpha (MIP-1alpha) (CCL3); and regulated upon activation, normal T-cell expressed and secreted (RANTES CCL5) were measured by a multiplex immunobead assay in an asymptomatic control group and DTS patients with and without meibomian gland disease (MGD).
Purpose: To evaluate the early postoperative change in astigmatism in pediatric patients having cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation using sutured temporal clear corneal incision.
Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed on all pediatric patients who underwent clear corneal cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation between 12/01/2005 and 11/30/2006.
Results: A total of 31 eyes of 22 patients who underwent temporal clear corneal cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation were included.
Objectives: To measure family members' preferences for nutrition interventions to improve the oral food and fluid intake of their relatives in a nursing home.
Design: Cross-sectional descriptive.
Setting: Three skilled nursing facilities in Southern California.
