Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of mature red cell and reticulocyte parameters to identify three conditions: iron deficiency anemia, anemia of chronic disease, and anemia of chronic disease associated with absolute iron deficiency.

Methods: Peripheral blood cells from 117 adult patients with anemia were classified according to iron status, inflammation, and hemoglobinopathies as: iron deficiency anemia (n=42), anemia of chronic disease (n=28), anemia of chronic disease associated with iron deficiency anemia (n=22), and heterozygous β-thalassemia (n=25). The percentage of microcytic erythrocytes, hypochromic erythrocytes, and the levels of hemoglobin in both reticulocytes and mature red cells were determined.

The aim of this study was to establish reference intervals (RIs) for the hemogram and iron status biomarkers in a physically active population. The study population included male volunteers (n = 150) with an average age of 19 ± 1 years who had participated in a regular and controlled exercise program for four months. Background: Various biomarkers have been proposed to help diagnose inflammatory and infectious diseases. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of some of these markers in children seen in an emergency service, and to compare a number of routinely used tests with measurements of serum amyloid A (SAA) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels.

New parameters correlated with the hemoglobin content in reticulocytes (RET-Y) and in red blood cells (RBC-Y) have been suggested as helpful in diagnosing iron deficiency anemia. We have studied RET-Y and RBC-Y indices in two groups of patients with microcytosis to verify if these parameters could be used to differentiate iron deficiency anemia from beta-thalassemia minor. Blood samples from 33 iron-deficient patients, 25 beta-thalassemic minor patients and 50 normal individuals were analyzed on a Sysmex XE-2100 instrument.

Iron deficiency and heterozygous beta-thalassemia are important causes of hypochromic-microcytic anemia. Two laboratory parameters are suggested for the differentiation of such anemia. Anemia of chronic disease (ACD) is frequent in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and its etiology is multifactorial. In a group of 111 patients with HIV, 19 were diagnosed with ACD. Parameters related to iron metabolism, such as serum iron (SI), serum ferritin (SF), and soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) were correlated to levels of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and results compared to a group of 42 nonanemic patients with HIV.
