Anaerobic digestion can provide benefits not only from the perspective of renewable energy production but also in the form of fertilization effect and increased retention of C in soils after digestate application. This study consisted of two phases, where the first phase assessed the suitability of carbon-rich co-feedstocks for methane production via laboratory testing. The second phase assessed the balance and stability of C before and after anaerobic digestion by systematic digestate characterization, and by evaluating its carbon retention potential using a modeling approach.

While organic carbon (OC) in agricultural mineral soils is widely studied in terms of soil carbon sequestration and gaseous emissions, discharge-induced OC loss from soil is still poorly understood and estimations of boreal soil OC loads within water erosion are lacking. Loss of organic matter from arable soils is a concern for surface water quality, climate change and soil productivity. Eutrophication of the Baltic Sea is driven by phosphorus and nitrogen. While the anthropogenic point source loads of both nutrients have decreased markedly, further reductions are needed. We studied the effects of catchment characteristics (soil type and land use) on the concentration and quality of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in river water and on the bacterial degradation of terrestrial DOM. The share of organic soil was the strongest predictor of high concentrations of dissolved organic carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus (DOC, DON, and DOP, respectively), and was linked to DOM quality. Soil type was more important than land use in determining the concentration and quality of riverine DOM.
