Stapedotomy or Stapedectomy: Does It Really Matter?

 Otosclerosis leads to stapes fixation and consequent conductive hearing loss. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment, and it can be achieved through small fenestra stapedotomy or stapedectomy. Despite the first being favored by most, evidence supporting its superiority over the latter remains inconclusive.

The Use of 3D Printing Technology for Manufacturing Metal Antennas in the 5G/IoT Context.

With the rise of 5G, Internet of Things (IoT), and networks operating in the mmWave frequencies, a huge growth of connected sensors will be a reality, and high gain antennas will be desired to compensate for the propagation issues, and with low cost, characteristics inherent to metallic radiating structures. 3D printing technology is a possible solution in this way, as it can print an object with high precision at a reduced cost. This paper presents different methods to fabricate typical metal antennas using 3D printing technology.

The effects on the acoustic parameters and auditory-perceptive characteristics of voice in children submitted to adenoidectomy with or without tonsillectomy.

Objectives: To analyse the possible changes on the acoustic parameters and auditory-perceptive characteristics of children's voice after adenoidectomy with or without tonsillectomy.

Methods: Prospective cohort study of children aged 5-12 years at one month before surgery (t0) and one (t1), three (t3) and six (t6) months after adenoidectomy with or without tonsillectomy. On each assessment the acoustic parameters (fundamental frequency, jitter %, shimmer % and harmonics-to-noise ratio) and auditory-perceptive analysis (nasal resonance, loudness, pitch, GRBAS scale and maximum phonation time) were recorded.

Cochleotoxicity monitoring protocol.

Introduction: Cochlear damage is frequent in long-term aminoglycosides therapy or chemotherapeutic treatments with platinum-based agents. Despite its prevalence, it is currently underestimated and underdiagnosed. A monitoring protocol is vital to the early detection of cochleotoxicity and its implementation is widely encouraged in every hospital unit.

Septoplasty with or without postoperative nasal packing? Prospective study.

Unlabelled: Anterior nasal packing is carried out in a number of nasal surgeries, especially in septoplasty. However, it is not an innocuous procedure and for this its benefit has been challenged.

Objective: To assess the need for anterior nasal packing and the quality of life of patients submitted to septoplasty.

Long term outcome of otosclerosis surgery.

Unlabelled: The treatment of otosclerosis is eminently surgical. Good immediate results have been well documented when stapedotomy or stapedectomy are chosen.

Objectives: This study aims to assess long term audiometric performance after otosclerosis surgery.
