'Let's work together to pass medical school': a qualitative study of medical student attitudes to teamwork, competition and collaboration.

Teamwork is vital to all types of work, and graduates of higher education programmes must be prepared to contribute to a wide variety of professional teams. This is especially true in healthcare, where graduates will work in multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) under considerable pressure. This study is a follow-up to a previous study, where we described how competition between students is a barrier to constructive teamwork.

Novel self-stratifying bioelectrochemical system for municipal wastewater treatment halves nitrous oxide emissions.

Reducing carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions are prime global goals. Wastewater treatment contributes significantly, and this study developed a technology with a focus on utilisation in small-decentralised plants. Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) utilise bacteria to remove pollutants while generating power and a range of experiments were performed to investigate their suitability compared to conventional trickling filters.

Maternal and neonatal complications in pregnancies with and without pre-gestational diabetes mellitus.

Objectives: To compare pregnancy complications in pregnancies with and without pre-gestational diabetes mellitus (DM) managed in a multidisciplinary high-risk diabetes antenatal clinic.

Methods: This screening cohort study was undertaken at a large maternity unit in the United Kingdom between January 2010 and December 2022. We included singleton pregnancies that booked at our unit at 11-13 weeks' gestation.

Perspectives on Sedation Among Interdisciplinary Team Members in ICU: A Survey Study.

Objective: To explore the interdisciplinary team members' beliefs and attitudes about sedation when caring for mechanically ventilated patients in the ICU.

Exploring basic science knowledge retention within a cohort of undergraduate medical students in the United Kingdom: A longitudinal study.

Background: Clinical reasoning is reliant on students having acquired a strong foundation in the basic sciences. However, there remains uncertainty regarding whether medical students are maintaining this knowledge over the span of their degrees. Therefore, this project aimed to assess long-term retention of basic science knowledge within a cohort of students from an undergraduate medical school in the United Kingdom (UK).

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated emergency changes to teaching, learning and assessment across higher education. Healthcare courses were particularly affected because of their interdependence with overstretched health services. We used this unprecedented situation to provide insight into how students react to unexpected crises and how institutions can most effectively support them.

CD3TCRαβ/CD19-Depleted Mismatched Family or Unrelated Donor Salvage Stem Cell Transplantation for Graft Dysfunction in Inborn Errors of Immunity.

A minority of children experience significant graft dysfunction after undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for inborn errors of immunity (IEI). The optimal approach to salvage HSCT in this scenario is unclear with respect to conditioning regimen and stem cell source. This single-center retrospective case series reports the outcomes of salvage CD3TCRαβ/CD19-depleted mismatched family or unrelated donor stem cell transplantation (TCRαβ-SCT) between 2013 and 2022 for graft dysfunction in 12 children with IEI.

Introduction: Maternal weight management services have been recognised as a good opportunity to influence lifestyle and dietary behaviour of mothers and families. Exploring women's views of maternal weight management services is paramount to understand what constitutes the most suitable service. This study therefore explored experiences among women with a raised body mass index (BMI) of maternal weight management service provision and the barriers and facilitators to weight management during pregnancy.

A special issue of Essays in Biochemistry on current educational developments in molecular bioscience.

The 4th joint UK Biochemical Society and Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) education event, 'Evolving Molecular Bioscience Education' took place online on May 27 and 28, 2021. The event, continuing the biennial series, comprised the invited speakers' talks, group discussions and other participants' pre-recorded flash presentations. Although the UK dominated, there were also speakers and participants from other European countries and other continents.

Biogeochemical impacts of sewage effluents in predominantly rural river catchments: Are point source inputs distinct to background diffuse pollution?

Discharge of treated sewage effluent to rivers can degrade aquatic ecosystem quality, interacting with multiple stressors in the wider catchment. In predominantly rural catchments, the river reach influence of point source effluents is unknown relative to complex background pressures. We examined water column, sediment and biofilm biogeochemical water quality parameters along river transects (200 m upstream to 1 km downstream) during summer at five wastewater treatment works (WWTW) in Scotland.

'Everyone is trying to outcompete each other': a qualitative study of medical student attitudes to a novel peer-assessed undergraduate teamwork module.

The centrality of teamwork in ensuring the effective functioning of institutions across all sectors is undeniable. However, embedding teamwork into higher education has been hampered due to a range of deeply entrenched practices associated broadly with the foregrounding of knowledge, beliefs about the place of skill training and routines of assessment. As a result, despite an urgent need to address teamwork, little progress has been made with respect to progressing teamwork education.

'It is difficult to think about becoming what you have never seen': Black students' reflections around a career in academic dentistry.

This opinion piece considers the national representation of the Black population in the United Kingdom in an academic career in dentistry and draws on engagement with Black dental students to see what their perceptions of this are. Black people are under-represented in dentistry as a whole and the number of Black academics who teach dentistry to an increasing number of aspiring young Black dental students is exceedingly low. Black dental students do not see themselves represented by their teachers and therefore 'it is difficult to think about [them] becoming what [they] have never seen'.

Teaching, research or balanced? An exploration of the experiences of biomedical scientists working in UK medical schools.

Driven by demand for high standards in university education, efforts have been made in the UK to address the perceived imbalance between teaching and research. However, teaching is still perceived by many as having less credibility and is attributed less importance. The purpose of our research was to explore how distinct types of academic job profiles ('research' or 'education' focused, or 'balanced') impact on biomedical scientists' perceptions of the lecturer role.

Spatial representation of in-stream sediment phosphorus release combining channel network approaches and in-situ experiments.

Impairment of rivers by elevated phosphorus (P) concentration is an issue often studied at outlets of mesoscale catchments. Our objective was to evaluate within-catchment spatio-temporal processes along connected reaches to understand processes of internal P loading associated with sediment input, accumulations in channels and sediment-water column P exchange. Our overall hypothesis was that heterogeneous sediment residence within the channel of a 52 km mixed land cover catchment resulted in key zones for sediment-water P exchange.

Standard setting anchor statements: a double cross-over trial of two different methods.

Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation for cystic fibrosis.

Background: Studies suggest that a diet rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids may have beneficial anti-inflammatory effects for chronic conditions such as cystic fibrosis. This is an updated version of a previously published review.

Objectives: To determine whether there is evidence that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation reduces morbidity and mortality and to identify any adverse events associated with supplementation.

Migrant women's experiences of pregnancy, childbirth and maternity care in European countries: A systematic review.

Background: Across Europe there are increasing numbers of migrant women who are of childbearing age. Migrant women are at risk of poorer pregnancy outcomes. Models of maternity care need to be designed to meet the needs of all women in society to ensure equitable access to services and to address health inequalities.
