The efficient synthesis and photophysical properties of a series of ambipolar donor-acceptor-donor systems is described where the acceptor is dibenzothiophene S,S-dioxide and the donor is fluorene, carbazole, or arylamine. The systems exhibit intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) states (of variable ICT character strengths) leading to fluorescence emission ranging from deep blue to green with moderate to high photoluminescence quantum yields. The emission properties can be effectively tuned by systematically changing the position of substitution on both donor and acceptor units (which affects the extent of conjugation) and the redox potentials of the donor units.

The materials display bright deep-blue fluorescence and evidence is presented for a planarised intramolecular charge-transfer (PICT) state in the F-S systems.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTwo ladder-type polymers have been examined using polarized optical absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy in solution and solid state. The fluorescence anisotropy excitation spectra of ladder-type methyl-substituted poly(para-phenylene) and poly(naphthylene-phenylene) follow their absorption profiles, contrary to the typical behavior in other conjugated polymers, which show excitation wavelength dependent anisotropy until the onset of the typical red edge effect. Using Raman microscopy and linear dichroism of aligned stretched polyethylene films containing the ladder polymer, it has been found that the orientation of the absorption transition dipole moment is dependent on the conjugation length.

The purpose of the investigation was to investigate the nature of the interactions in thin films and to examine what impact the difference in side chain structure and molecular weight in poly(2'-methoxy-5-2-ethyl-hexoxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene (MEH-PPV) and poly(2-(3',7'-dimethyloctyloxy)-5-methoxy-1,4-phenylene-vinylene) (OC1C10-PPV) has on the electronic and optical properties of the two polymers. Aligning the polymers by dispersing them in anisotropic solvents and stretched films shows that the side chains have an impact on the relative orientations of the transition dipole moments.

The influx of new testing methods into the clinical laboratory, demands for evaluation and standardisation of methods, interpretation of results and evaluation of laboratory performance have highlighted the need for internal and External Quality Assessment (EQA) systems more than ever before. External Quality Assessment panels demand reproducible, stable specimens of consistent form, suitable for transportation.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFFluorescence anisotropy of dilute polyfluorene polymer solutions has been used to show that two processes, exciton migration and conformational relaxation (twisting of part of the chain), occur within polyfluorene polymers of 20 or more repeat units. The former process is dominant and temperature independent for high excitation energy but, as the chain length is decreased, exciton migration is eliminated and the conformational relaxation becomes the only mechanism by which excited state energy relaxation to the emission site can occur. When the polymers are excited in the absorption band tails, again no migration is observed but conformational relaxation is still present.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe sequenced the envelope (E) genes of 59 DEN-2 isolates collected from ten Caribbean islands, six South American countries, and two Central American countries between 1981 and 2000, a period characterized by hyperendemicity and increased incidence of severe dengue. Fifty-two isolates belonged to "American/Asian" subtype IIIb, possessing a characteristic polar residue at envelope aa position 390 (N [n = 48] or S [n = 4]) common to that group. Six isolates from Trinidad (1981), Honduras (1991 [4]), and El Salvador (1987) fell into the "Native American" subtype V (D at aa 390), and one from Honduras (1986) belonged to "Asian" subtype I.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe sequenced the E gene and adjacent prM/M and NS1 junctions (1940 bp) of 48 Dengue-4 (DEN-4) isolates collected between 1981 and 1999 from 8 Caribbean islands and from 7 South and Central American countries. Phylogenetic analysis confirms a single introduction in the early 1980s and a high degree of gene flow resulting in a pattern of evolution defined more by time period than geographic origin, especially within the Caribbean basin. A modern Caribbean clade consisting of four distinct lineages has arisen, comprised of isolates from Caribbean islands and nearby regions of South America.
