Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates steroid hormone production and activity patterns in banteng, an endangered species, focusing on fecal progestagens, androgens, and glucocorticoids measured at the Saint Louis Zoo.
  • Researchers used validated assays and activity monitors to analyze changes in hormone levels and movement relative to reproductive status and seasonal changes.
  • Key findings include year-round ovulatory cycles in females, increased hormone concentrations and activity during summer, and specific changes in activity around pregnancy and parturition events, which can inform better management practices for captive banteng populations.

Although reproduction in the domestic horse has been well described, less is known about reproduction in wild equids. This study describes endocrine patterns associated with estrous cycles and pregnancy for Somali wild asses (Equus africanus somaliensis), an endangered African equid. Fecal samples were collected three times per week for more than 2 years from five female Somali wild asses at the Saint Louis Zoo; progestagen and estrogen metabolites were quantified using commercially available immunoassays.
