Prognosis of mucinous and signet-ring cell colorectal cancer in a population-based cohort.

Purpose: Besides classical colorectal adenocarcinomas (AC), mucinous adenocarcinomas (MAC) and signet-ring cell carcinomas (SC) occur. Controversy remains regarding their prognostic role. Aim of this study was to define prognostic and histopathological specifications of mucinous and signet-ring cell colorectal cancer.

Damage control strategy for the treatment of perforated diverticulitis with generalized peritonitis.

Background: The best surgical strategy for the management of perforated diverticulitis with generalized peritonitis of the sigmoid colon is not clearly defined. The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to evaluate the value of a damage control strategy.

Methods: All patients who underwent emergency laparotomy for perforated diverticular disease of the sigmoid colon with generalized peritonitis between 2010 and 2015 were included.

Neuroendocrine pancreatic carcinoma after initial diagnosis of acute postpartal coeliac disease in a 37-year old woman - fatal coincidence or result of a neglected disease?

An acute presentation after pregnancy of coeliac disease (CD) in the puerperium is a rare condition which has been described mostly in primigravidae in patients highly suspicious of latent CD. We report the case of a 37-year-old woman who was referred to our Hospital because of refractory watery diarrhea and malnutrition syndrome. Endoscopy of the upper gastrointestinal tract revealed the classic visual features of CD and in addition, some duodenal ulcers negative for Helicobacter pylori, which seems to be another clinical feature in patients with CD.

Annual cost of hospitalization, inpatient rehabilitation and sick leave of anal cancer in Germany.

Objective: Literature on the economic burden of anal cancer in Germany is scarce. About 84% of these cancers are associated with human papillomavirus infection. This study, therefore, aimed to assess the annual costs of human papillomavirus-related anal cancer incurred by hospitalization, inpatient rehabilitation, and sick leave in 2008 in Germany.

3,7-Dimethylpentadecan-2-ol and 3-methylpentadecan-2-ol were identified in female whole body extracts from the two pine sawfly species Gilpinia frutetorum and Gilpinia socia. This is the first observation of 3-methylpentadecan-2-ol in extracts of a female pine sawfly species. Synthetic and highly pure stereoisomers of 3,7-dimethylpentadecan-2-ol and 3-methylpentadecan-2-ol were used to verify that the (2S,3R,7R)-isomer of 3,7-dimethylpentadecan-2-ol and (2S,3R)-3-methylpentadecan-2-ol were present in the extracts.

[Quality criteria for treatment of colorectal cancer. From a surgeon's viewpoint].

The surgeon is the key "prognosis factor" for colorectal cancer. For this reason quality criteria were recently established (including minimum numbers) in order to treat patients who are entitled to the best quality of care and to improve the prognosis. The aim of this study was to critically discuss the existing demands on the surgeon based on the current literature and our own results and to formulate evidence-based quality criteria for surgical clinics.

Bayesian analysis of the species-specific lengthening of the growing season in two European countries and the influence of an insect pest.

A recent lengthening of the growing season in mid and higher latitudes of the northern hemisphere is reported as a clear indicator for climate change impacts. Using data from Germany (1951-2003) and Slovenia (1961-2004), we study whether changes in the start, end, and length of the growing season differ among four deciduous broad-leaved tree species and countries, how the changes are related to temperature changes, and what might be the confounding effects of an insect attack. The functional behaviour of the phenological and climatological time series and their trends are not analysed by linear regression, but by a new Bayesian approach taking into account different models for the functional description (one change-point, linear, constant models).

[Anorectal manometry].

This document contains the guidelines of the German Societies of Neurogastroenterology and Motility, Gastroenterology (committee for proctology), Abdominal Surgery (coloproctology working group), and Coloproctology for anorectal manometry in adults. Recommendations are given about technical notes, study preparation (equipment; patient), technique for performing manometry and data analysis, reproducibility, and indications. Minimum standards for anorectal manometry are measurement of resting and squeeze pressure, testing of rectoanal inhibitory reflex, determination of rectal sensation (first perception and urge), and calculation of rectal compliance.

Sex pheromone of the pine sawfly, Gilpinia pallida: chemical identification, synthesis, and biological activity.

We present the identification of the sex pheromone in the pine sawfly, Gilpinia pallida, including analysis of the female pheromone content, male antennal response and attraction in the field, and synthesis of the most active pheromone component. Several 3,7-dimethyl-2-alkanols were identified from female whole-body extracts, including some compounds with a 2R configuration. This is the first observation of such compounds in a pine sawfly species.

Biliary manifestation of Erdheim-Chester disease mimicking Klatskin's carcinoma.

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare non-Langerhans form of histiocytosis, characterized by infiltration of foamy, lipid-laden histiocytes often affecting the lower extremities and resulting in symmetrical osteosclerosis. Internal organs involved include the lung and the kidneys, reflecting progressive disseminated granulomatous infiltration. Progression may be fatal, especially in cases of systemic extraosseous involvement.

Influence of hospital volume on local recurrence and survival in a population sample of rectal cancer patients.

Aims: To investigate the role of hospital volume and individual hospitals on long term outcomes (local recurrence and survival) of rectal cancer patients.

Methods: One thousand thirty-eight patients with rectal cancer were diagnosed between 1996 and 1998. From these, we analysed 884 patients with a resected invasive primary rectal cancer.

[A 67-year-old patient with diarrhoea and constipation without any pathological findings in virtual colonoscopy].

Virtual colonoscopy provides a computer-simulated endoluminal perspective of the air-filled, distended colon using modern CT scanning (spiral CT). According to recent studies the sensitivity and specificity of this technique are high for adenomatous polyps > or = 10 mm. [Rectal prolapse in adults].
