Background And Aims: Individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) experience a high symptom burden, including abdominal pain, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances; yet, little is known regarding the relationship between sex and gender on symptoms. We sought to report symptom severity for cisgender men, cisgender women, and transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals. In addition, we used network analysis to identify core symptoms and explore if symptoms and their relationships differ between cisgender men and cisgender women.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to understand how heart rate variability (HRV) in the high frequency (HF) range relates to EEG delta band power in women with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) compared to healthy women.
  • - Results indicated that women with IBS experienced more NREM sleep and differing HRV patterns (higher HF, lower low frequency (LF), and a decreased LF/HF ratio), but showed lower delta band power in their EEG readings.
  • - The findings suggested a disrupted relationship between the heart and brain activity in IBS patients, indicated by longer lag times between cardiac signals and EEG delta power, although it remains unclear if this dysregulation affects the development of IBS.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a disorder of gut-brain interaction, is often comorbid with somatic pain and psychological disorders. Dysregulated signaling of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its receptor, tropomyosin-related kinase B (TrkB), has been implicated in somatic-psychological symptoms in individuals with IBS. We investigated the association of 10 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the regulatory 3' untranslated region of neurotrophic receptor tyrosine kinase-2 (NTRK2) kinase domain-deficient truncated isoform (TrkB.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a disorder of gut-brain interaction, is associated with abdominal pain and stool frequency/character alterations that are linked to changes in microbiome composition. We tested whether taxa differentially abundant between females with IBS vs healthy control females (HC) are associated with daily gastrointestinal and psychological symptom severity. Participants (age 18-50 year) completed a 3-day food record and collected a stool sample during the follicular phase.

Background: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder of the gut-brain interaction that is associated with abdominal pain, altered bowel patterns, and reduced quality of life. Up to 50% of patients with IBS also report anxiety or depressive symptoms. Although effective self-management interventions exist for individuals with IBS, few have been effectively implemented, and most do not consider the unique needs of patients with comorbid IBS and anxiety or depression.

Background & Aims: Functional abdominal pain disorders (FAPDs) are more prevalent in female patients. Dietary fiber may alleviate FAPD symptoms; however, whether this effect is sex dependent remains unclear. We investigated the sex dependency of dietary fiber benefit on abdominal pain in children with FAPDs and explored the potential involvement of the gut microbiome.

Article Synopsis
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) involves abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits, such as constipation, diarrhea, or both, and is linked to malabsorption of carbohydrates.
  • Research has identified several common genetic variants in digestive enzymes associated with IBS symptoms through candidate gene studies.
  • Additionally, rare genetic variations may contribute to certain IBS cases, suggesting a genetic basis for moderate to severe gastrointestinal symptoms in these individuals.

Among adults with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), self-reported sleep disturbances are associated with active symptoms, but the association between sleep measures and endoscopic disease activity is unknown. This study aimed to (1) compare sleep-wake behaviors among IBD patients based on endoscopic and clinical disease activity and (2) describe associations between actigraphy, self-reported sleep measures, and symptoms of fatigue, anxiety, and depression. Participants wore a wrist actigraph for 10 consecutive days and completed self-reported sleep questionnaires (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index [PSQI] and Patient-Reported Outcome Measures System [PROMIS] Sleep Disturbance and Sleep Interference questionnaires).

This article provides a narrative review of the state of the science for both cyclic vomiting syndrome and cannabis hyperemesis syndrome along with a discussion of the relationship between these 2 conditions. The scope of this review includes the historical context of these conditions as well as the prevalence, diagnostic criteria, pathogenesis, and treatment strategies for both conditions. A synopsis of the endocannabinoid system provides a basis for the hypothesis that a lack of cannabidiol in modern high-potency Δ 9 -tetrahydrocannabinol cannabis may be contributory to cannabis hyperemesis syndrome and possibly other cannabis use disorders.
