Importance of early diagnosis and follow-up in multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN II B).

Three patients with a sporadic form of multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) IIb are presented. MEN IIb is the association of medullary carcinoma of the thyroid (MTC), pheochromocytoma and multiple mucosal neuromata. The age at diagnosis and primary therapy of MTC was relatively late (8, 16, 18 years) although thyroid enlargement (two cases), typical marfanoid habitus (two cases) or multiple mucosal neuromata (one case) had been evident since early childhood.

Correlation of field potentials with redox-states of cytochromes recorded from the olfactory cortical slice of guinea pig.

Field potentials and the reflection spectra of cytochromes were continuously recorded from the olfactory cortical slice of a guinea pig which was incubated under the normoxic and anoxic conditions. The reduction of the oxidated spectra of the cytochromes occurred before the decrease of field potential heights and the oxidation of the reduced spectra occurred before their recovery. In a 3 min anoxic experiment, a 90% recovery of the cytochromes aa3, b, and c, and the field potential amplitudes took place in this order after the restoration of oxygen.

[Supportive testosterone treatment in surgical repair of hypospadias].

Hypoplastic development of the phallus renders repair of hypospadias more difficult and very often limits functional and cosmetic results. Effect of silybin on hepatic cell membranes after damage by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH).

Young female NMRI mice were given a single intraperitoneal injection of a PAH mixture containing 3 micrometers benzo(a)pyrene in a suspension of 0.5 ml tricapryline. 3 and 4 days later a number of the mice received injections of 100 mg/kg body weight of Silybin in the tail vein.

Long-term study of liver damage following subcutaneous injection of airborne particle extracts and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon fractions.

Female NMRI mice aged 9-12 weeks were each given a single subcutaneous injection of 0.5 ml of a suspension containing either the total extracts or the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) fraction of airborne particles. Both the total extracts and PAH fractions contain 3 microgram benzopyrene.

Long-term study of virus contamination of surface water in the German Democratic Republic.

Between 1 January 1970 and 31 December 1979, a study of the concentration of viruses in surface water was carried out by 4 virological laboratories in different regions of the German Democratic Republic. All these laboratories used the same methods for virus detection.Altogether 1908 samples from 30 sampling points were evaluated.

Virilizing hepatoblastoma--significance of alpha-1-fetoprotein and human chorionic gonadotropin as tumor markers in diagnosis and follow-up.

Hepatoblastoma was diagnosed in a 12 month old boy presenting with hepatomegaly and isosexual precocious puberty. Preoperative levels of both alpha-1-fetoprotein (AFP) and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) were highly elevated. The tumor was removed by hepatic trisegmentectomy.

NSILA and foetal growth.

Employing a sensitive competitive protein binding assay for NSILA (non-suppressible insulin-like activity), circulating levels of this somatomedin (SM) have been measured throughout pregnancy, at parturition, and in foetal and newborn sera. Acid-dissociable serum NSILA (mean +/- SEM) in 57 women was significantly higher during pregnancy (1106 +/- 46 microunits/ml), than in 11 adult non-pregnant control subjects (844 +/- 22 microunits/ml), but not correlated with week of gestation or with serum growth hormone (GH) or cortisol levels. At parturition, the NSILA concentration in 28 cord sera (598 +/- 38 microunits/ml) was significantly less than in the corresponding maternal sera (1039 +/- 63 microunits/ml).
