Measuring the global response to antimicrobial resistance, 2020-21: a systematic governance analysis of 114 countries.

Background: Understanding strategic commitments and policy responses to overcome antimicrobial resistance at the national, regional, and global levels is required to evaluate current progress and direct future planning. National action plans (NAPs) are the primary mechanism for guiding national strategy and action for antimicrobial resistance governance. Although several NAPs have been developed, no comprehensive content analysis of these plans exists.

Design and methods of a randomized web-based physical activity intervention among children with cancer: A report from the Children's Oncology Group.

Background: Promoting physical activity soon after treatment for childhood cancer may benefit health because sedentary lifestyle during curative therapy may perpetuate physical and emotional complications. The primary goals of this study are to evaluate the effects of a 6-month web-based, rewards-based physical activity intervention on fitness, biomarkers of cardiometabolic health, inflammation, adipokine status, quality of life and school attendance, and determine if effect of intervention on markers of cardiometabolic health is mediated by changes in fitness. The primary outcome of interest is fitness (physiological cost index, six-minute walk test) measured at end of intervention.

Fighting Antimicrobial Resistance: Development and Implementation of the Ghanaian National Action Plan (2017-2021).

In recent years, Ghana has been recognised as a leading player in addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Africa. However, based on our literature review, we could not ascertain whether the core elements of the national action plan (NAP) were implemented in practice. In this paper, we present a qualitative analysis of the development of AMR-related policies in Ghana, including the NAP.

Critical prerequisites for Covid-19 vaccine acceleration: A developing economy perspective.

This study aims to explore the critical prerequisites for accelerating the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine in developing countries by using Ghana as a case study. A qualitative study method and content analysis approach was used. In-depth interviews were conducted with health experts from the Ghana Health Service, World Health Organization (WHO), AstraZeneca, Novartis, and Medtronic Inc.

The COVID-19 pandemic and resulting stay-at-home directives, adopted out of necessity to protect human health, introduced significant challenges for horse owners and small equine businesses. Implementing a stepwise educational approach for bridging the gap between specialty and primary care for childhood cancer survivors.

Purpose: To create a community of learning involving primary care providers and subspecialist to enhance providers' knowledge regarding care of adult childhood cancer survivors (CCS).

Methods: A stepwise approach was used to develop educational opportunities for providers. This process started with a local/regional in-person conference, which informed a webinar series, and resulted in the development of enduring material using a dynamic learning management system.

Background: During the manufacture of sucrose from sugar beet, different microorganisms originating from the plant material as well as from the soil enter the process. Due to the formation of polysaccharide-based slimes, these contaminants may induce several adverse effects such as filtration problems during juice purification. Palliative care for acute kidney injury patients in the intensive care unit.

Patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) in the intensive care unit (ICU) are often suitable for palliative care due to the high symptom burden. The role of palliative medicine in this patient population is not well defined and there is a lack of established guidelines to address this issue. Because of this, patients in the ICU with AKI deprived of the most comprehensive or appropriate care.

Atypical Hemolytic-Uremic Syndrome: An Update on Pathophysiology, Diagnosis, and Treatment.

Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS), a rare variant of thrombotic microangiopathy, is characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and renal impairment. The condition is associated with poor clinical outcomes with high morbidity and mortality. Atypical HUS predominantly affects the kidneys but has the potential to cause multi-organ system dysfunction.

Rationale and design of the Children's Oncology Group (COG) study ALTE1621: a randomized, placebo-controlled trial to determine if low-dose carvedilol can prevent anthracycline-related left ventricular remodeling in childhood cancer survivors at high risk for developing heart failure.

Background: Anthracyclines are widely used in the treatment of childhood cancer. One of the well-recognized side-effects of anthracycline therapy is dose-dependent cardiomyopathy that may progress to heart failure (HF) years after completion of cancer-directed therapy. This study will evaluate the efficacy of low-dose beta-blocker (carvedilol) for HF risk reduction in childhood cancer survivors at highest risk for HF.

Identification of Targeting Peptides for Mucosal Delivery in Sheep and Mice.

In this study we identified and characterized a novel cyclic peptide that facilitates the rapid transportation of conjugated molecules across the epithelial layer of the small intestine. The peptide was initially selected from phage display libraries using a large animal experimental model, which employed consecutive in vitro and in vivo panning. The procedure was designed to enrich for peptides that facilitated transcytosis across the intestinal epithelium into the intestinal afferent lymphatic system.

β-Tricalcium phosphate for bone replacement: stability and integration in sheep.

Implants of microporous β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) were developed for primarily stable supply of bone defects. A consistent stability over the healing period should be retained in sheep. β-TCP cylindrical shaped implants, with 7 mm diameter, 25 mm length, medium pore diameter 5 μm and 40% porosity were developed.

Efferent intestinal lymph protein responses in nematode-resistant, -resilient and -susceptible lambs under challenge with Trichostrongylus colubriformis.

Unlabelled: The mechanisms underlying resistance to challenge by gastrointestinal nematode parasites in sheep are complex. Using DIGE, we profiled ovine lymph proteins in lambs with host resistance (R), resilience (Ri) or susceptibility (S) to a daily trickle challenge with the nematode Trichostrongylus colubriformis. Efferent intestinal lymph was collected prior to infection (day 1) and on days 5 and 10 post-infection.

The global health concept of the German government: strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities.

Recognising global health as a rapidly emerging policy field, the German federal government recently released a national concept note for global health politics (July 10, 2013). As the German government could have a significant impact on health globally by making a coherent, evidence-informed, and long-term commitment in this field, we offer an initial appraisal of the strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for development recognised in this document. We conclude that the national concept is an important first step towards the implementation of a coherent global health policy.

Fragmentation of salivary stones with a 980nm diode laser.

Objective: Intraductal laser lithotripsy is a preferred method to fragment large, immobile intraglandular salivary stones. A number of different laser systems has been investigated for this purpose. It was our aim to study the effectiveness of a 980nm diode laser when fragmenting salivary stones in an experimental set up.

C6, a new monoclonal antibody, reacts with the follicle-associated epithelium of calf ileal Peyer's patches.

The follicle-associated epithelium (FAE) of Peyer's patches (PPs) contains M cells that are important for reducing mucosal immune responses by transporting antigens into the underlying lymphoid tissue. We generated a monoclonal antibody (C6) that reacted with the FAE of calf ileal PPs, and analyzed the characteristics of C6 using immunohistochemistry and Western blotting. FAE of the ileal PP was stained with C6 during both late fetal developmental and postnatal stages.

[Recurrent failed ICD therapy of ventricular tachycardia].

Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) are used as standard therapy to prevent sudden cardiac death in heart failure patients. Today, physicians in emergency and intensive care medicine are often confronted with problems of ICD therapy in these patients. We report a case of a patient suffering from recurrent ventricular tachycardia (VT) requiring antiarrhythmia treatment with amiodarone.

Application of plant-based antimicrobials for the growth inhibition of clostridia in pressed beet pulp silage.

Background: In this study the inhibition of hop beta acids on the growth of clostridia in soil-contaminated pressed sugar beet pulp silages was investigated. Hop beta acids are natural substances which display their effect at low concentrations. Fresh pressed beet pulp material was mixed with soil to artificially contaminate it with clostridia.

Orthopaedic practice in total hip arthroplasty and total knee arthroplasty: results from the Global Orthopaedic Registry (GLORY).

The Global Orthopaedic Registry (GLORY) offers global and country-specific insights into the management of patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty and total knee arthroplasty by drawing on data, from June 2001 to December 2004, of 15,020 patients in 13 countries. GLORY achieved a 70% follow-up rate at 3 and/or 12 months, allowing longer-term findings to be reported. This paper reports data from GLORY on patient demographics, surgical approaches to patient management, selection of implants, anesthetic and analgesic practices, blood management, length of hospital stay, and patient disposition at discharge.
