Article Synopsis
  • * A study compared 290 BPD patients with 72 patients with other personality disorders (OPD) over 24 years, finding that BPD patients reported higher levels of emptiness at the start, but both groups had similar declines over time.
  • * Key predictors of emptiness severity in BPD patients included a history of PTSD and the number of competencies developed during childhood, suggesting these factors influence how emptiness manifests over time.

In response to our study, the commentary by Infanti et al. (2024) raised critical points regarding (i) the conceptualization and utility of the user-avatar bond in addressing gaming disorder (GD) risk, and (ii) the optimization of supervised machine learning techniques applied to assess GD risk. To advance the scientific dialogue and progress in these areas, the present paper aims to: (i) enhance the clarity and understanding of the concepts of the avatar, the user-avatar bond, and the digital phenotype concerning gaming disorder (GD) within the broader field of behavioral addictions, and (ii) comparatively assess how the user-avatar bond (UAB) may predict GD risk, by both removing data augmentation before the data split and by implementing alternative data imbalance treatment approaches in programming.

The first purpose of this study was to determine time to attainment of symptomatic remissions and recoveries of 2-12 years duration for those with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and patients with other personality disorders (OPDs); the second was to determine the stability of these outcomes. Two hundred ninety inpatients meeting both Revised Diagnostic Interview for Borderlines (DIB-R) and criteria for BPD and 72 patients with OPDs were assessed during their index admission using a series of semistructured interviews. The same instruments were readministered at 12 contiguous 2-year time periods.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by unstable self-image, conflictual interpersonal relationships, emotional dysregulation, and marked impulsivity. One form of impulsivity commonly seen in BPD is binge eating; however, little is known about this maladaptive behavior in the context of BPD. In the eating disorder (ED) literature, multiple theories suggest binge eating occurs as a result of heightened levels of negative affect.

Stigmatizing views surrounding mental illness are widespread. Personality disorders (PDs) are among the most stigmatized mental illnesses, as individuals with PDs are often described using pejorative terms, which might impact clinicians' a priori expectations and increase the likelihood of stigmatization, discrimination, or early termination from treatment. The degree to which the terms used in any diagnostic classification systems are stigmatizing has never been examined.

Gaming avatars can influence users' attitudes and behaviors and manifest as the proteus effect. The present study examined proteus effect profiles among 571 gamers and their associations with disordered gaming and physical activity. Latent class analysis identified three profiles: non-influenced gamers, emotion-perception influenced gamers (highest proteus effect), and emotion-behavior influenced gamers (moderate proteus effect).

Introduction: Psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) during adolescence can lead to psychotic disorders. Digital media usage has been suggested to link to PLEs, but research is limited on how different types of screen exposure may differentially relate to PLEs over time. This study aimed to examine longitudinal associations between screen usage patterns and PLEs in adolescents.

Background: Caring for parents continuing pregnancy after learning about a severe life-limiting condition in their unborn is challenging. Most existing studies focus on affected families, whereas research on the subjective experience of care professionals is scarce.

Aim: We aimed to (1) explore experiences and needs of involved care professionals, (2) obtain information about existing care structures, and (3) identify requirements for a structured perinatal palliative care program.

AT-rich interaction domain 1A (ARID1A), a mammalian switch/sucrose nonfermenting complex subunit, modulates several cellular processes by regulating chromatin accessibility. It is encoded by , an immunosuppressive gene frequently disrupted in a many tumors, affecting the proliferation, migration, and invasion of cancer cells. Targeting molecular pathways and epigenetic regulation associated with ARID1A loss, such as inhibiting the PI3K/AKT pathway or modulating Wnt/β-catenin signaling, may help suppress tumor growth and progression.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to create and validate the Five-Factor Schizoid Inventory (FFZI) to measure traits of schizoid personality disorder (SZD PD) within the Five-Factor Model of personality.
  • In the first part, 496 college students completed various self-report measures, leading to strong evidence for the FFZI's internal consistency, convergent validity with similar personality traits, and discriminant validity from other disorders.
  • A follow-up study with 181 participants from MTurk confirmed the FFZI's reliability and validity, suggesting it effectively measures SZD PD and supports the idea that SZD PD traits are an extreme form of introversion.

Our objective was to determine pathways to health reported by patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) who had and had not attained a good overall outcome over 24 years of prospective follow-up. Overall outcome symptomatically and psychosocially and 11 pathways to health related to vocation, relationships, activities, and psychiatric treatment that patients reported were helpful to their functioning or feeling better about themselves were assessed at 12 contiguous 2-year follow-up periods using a semistructured interview. Good outcome patients reported significantly higher rates of pathways related to work performance, relationships with friends, relationship with a partner/spouse, and athletic activities.

The main aim of this article is to compare the prevalence of four forms of physically self-destructive behavior in the offspring of parents with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and compare them to the offspring of parents with other personality disorders (OPD). At the 4- and 6-year waves in a prospective study of the long-term course of BPD, participants were asked to report on the self-destructive behaviors of their children using the Childhood Self-Destructiveness Scale. A total of 68 parents were interviewed regarding 131 children, 104 of whom were offspring of parents with BPD ( = 55) and 27 were offspring of parents with OPD ( = 13).

High-throughput, field-based characterization of root systems for hundreds of genotypes in thousands of plots is necessary for breeding and identifying loci underlying variation in root traits and their plasticity. We designed a large-scale sampling of root pulling force, the vertical force required to extract the root system from the soil, in a maize diversity panel under differing irrigation levels for two growing seasons. We then characterized the root system architecture of the extracted root crowns.

Measurable (minimal) residual disease (MRD) status in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) has largely superseded the importance of traditional risk factors for ALL, such as baseline white blood cell count, cytogenetics, and immunophenotype, and has emerged as the most powerful independent prognostic predictor. The development of sensitive MRD techniques, such as multicolor flow cytometry (MFC), quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and next-generation sequencing (NGS), may further improve risk stratification and expand its impact in therapy. Additionally, the availability of highly effective agents for MRD eradication, such as blinatumomab, inotuzumab ozogamicin, and chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapies, enabled the development of frontline regimens capable of eradicating MRD early in the treatment course.

Even though gene amplification or protein overexpression occurs in approximately one-fifth of all breast cancers, the discovery of has, nevertheless, had profound implications for the disease. Indeed, the characterization of the receptor resulted in a number of significant advances. Structurally, unique features provided avenues for the development of numerous compounds with target-specificity; molecularly, biological constructs revealed a highly complex, internal signal transduction pathway with regulatory effects on tumor proliferation, survival, and perhaps, even resistance; and clinically, disease outcomes manifested its predictive and prognostic value.
