Cyclic adenosine-3',5-monophosphate concentration and enzyme activities of cerebrospinal fluid in meningitis of children.

The concentration of cyclic adenosine-3',5'-monophosphate (cAMP) and the activities of some enzymes of 29 children were measured from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma at various stages of meningitis. The CSF cAMP values in acute untreated phase of aseptic and purulent meningitis were equal, but significantly higher than those of convalescent children with no pathological clinical or laboratory findings. During the whole course (up to 2 weeks) of antimicrobial treatment of the purulent meningitis CSF cAMP concentration was higher than in the convalescent phase.

Stercoraceous and idiopathic perforations of the colon.

Fourteen patients have been encountered with stercoraceous or idiopathic perforations of the colon. Seven patients had a stercoraceous perforation; four had an idiopathic perforation; and three patients remained without exact classification. All the patients were admitted to hospital because of sudden abdominal pain.

Biological age, health, and health-risk indicators among 25-57-year-old men in two parts of Finland.

Biological age, health, and health-risk indicators were examined among 460 systematically chosen men, aged 25-57 years, in two parts of Finland. Morbidity rates and the prevalence of some health-risk indicators were higher and the standard of living lower in North Karelia than in South-West Finland. The index of biological age (IBA) did not show significant differences between the districts and did not correlate with health-risk indicators.

Cyclic amp concentration and enzyme activities of cerebrospinal fluid in patients with epilepsy or central nervous system damage.

Cyclic adenosine-3',5'-monophosphate (cAMP) concentration in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was measured by the protein binding method of Gilman from 62 neurological patients, 46 of them were epileptics and 16 with a central nervous system (CNS) damage. In epileptic patients the CSF concentration of cAMP was significantly elevated (p smaller than 0.02) for 3 days after an attack when compared with those free from attacks for at least 2 weeks.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentration and urinary excretion of cyclic adenosine-3',5'-monophosphate(cAMP) were measured in children aged from 3 days to 15 years by the protein-binding method of Gilman (1970). The mean CSF cAMP concentration (22.4 plus or minus 0.
