The underlying architecture of musical sensibility: One general factor, four subdimensions, and strong genetic effects.

Current evidence suggests moderate heritability of music phenotypes, such as music listening and achievement. However, other fundamental traits underlying people's interest in music and its relevance for their lives have been largely neglected, and little is known about the genetic and environmental etiology of what we refer to as musical sensibility-the tendency to be emotionally and aesthetically engaged by music. This study investigated the latent structure, as well as the genetic and environmental factors influencing individual variability in multiple domains of musical sensibility, and the etiological architecture of the relationship between the dimensions.

Methods: A Danish nationwide cohort study was conducted between November 2014 and November 2019.

Purpose: Dental evaluation and management prior to hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) plays a vital role in identifying and treating infections that may be life-threatening. The purpose of this study is to describe the dental management of patients undergoing pre-HSCT examination with the Dental Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) and to report on odontogenic complications.

Methods: Patients referred for evaluation as part of the standard preparation for HSCT were included.

An Emergency Simulation Course in a Postdoctoral General Dentistry Program: The New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine Experience.

Dentists can encounter life-threatening medical emergencies during the provision of routine dental care and must therefore be comfortable with the management of these emergencies. High-fidelity simulation has been used routinely in medical and surgical training and is a recognized and effective educational and assessment tool. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a new high-fidelity simulation training course in medical emergency management for residents in the General Practice Residency program at New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine.

Biomonitoring of Danish school children and mothers including biomarkers of PBDE and glyphosate.

Background: The Danish part of the large European Human biomonitoring pilot project Demonstration of a study to Coordinate and Perform Human biomonitoring on a European Scale (DEMOCOPHES) investigated the urine, hair and blood concentrations of 66 different environmental chemicals in a group of 145 Danish school children aged 6-11 years and their mothers from rural and urban areas in autumn 2011. Some - but not all - results were published; however, the concurrence of the chemicals has not been assessed.

Methods: The measured concentrations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and glyphosate is assessed to complete the investigation of all 66 chemicals in DEMOCOPHES.

Aspects of Quantitation in Mass Spectrometry Imaging Investigated on Cryo-Sections of Spiked Tissue Homogenates.

Internal standards have been introduced in quantitative mass spectrometry imaging in order to compensate for differences in intensities throughout an image caused by, for example, difference in ion suppression or analyte extraction efficiency. To test how well the internal standards compensate for differences in tissue types in, for example, whole-body imaging, a set of tissue homogenates of different tissue types (lung, liver, kidney, heart, and brain) from rabbit was spiked to the same concentration with the drug amitriptyline and imaged in the same experiment using isotope labeled amitriptyline as internal standard. The results showed, even after correction with internal standard, significantly lower intensities from brain and to some extent also lung tissue, differences which may be ascribed to binding of the drug to proteins or lipids as known from traditional bioanalysis.

RNA assemblages orchestrate complex cellular processes.

Eukaryotic mRNAs are monocistronic, and therefore mechanisms exist that coordinate the synthesis of multiprotein complexes in order to obtain proper stoichiometry at the appropriate intracellular locations. RNA-binding proteins containing low-complexity sequences are prone to generate liquid droplets via liquid-liquid phase separation, and in this way create cytoplasmic assemblages of functionally related mRNAs. In a recent iCLIP study, we showed that the Drosophila RNA-binding protein Imp, which exhibits a C-terminal low-complexity sequence, increases the formation of F-actin by binding to 3' untranslated regions of mRNAs encoding components participating in F-actin biogenesis.

Routine endoscopic surveillance for local recurrence of rectal cancer is futile.

Background: National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines for rectal adenocarcinoma regarding routine surveillance with proctoscopy for local recurrence have been evolving. The purpose of this study was to examine the utility of rectal surveillance.

Methods: This is a single-center, retrospective review of patients (2004 to 2011) who underwent total mesorectal excision for rectal cancer.

Drosophila Imp iCLIP identifies an RNA assemblage coordinating F-actin formation.

Background: Post-transcriptional RNA regulons ensure coordinated expression of monocistronic mRNAs encoding functionally related proteins. In this study, we employ a combination of RIP-seq and short- and long-wave individual-nucleotide resolution crosslinking and immunoprecipitation (iCLIP) technologies in Drosophila cells to identify transcripts associated with cytoplasmic ribonucleoproteins (RNPs) containing the RNA-binding protein Imp.

Results: We find extensive binding of Imp to 3' UTRs of transcripts that are involved in F-actin formation.

A survey of American College of Surgery fellows evaluating their use of antibiotic prophylaxis in the placement of subcutaneously implanted central venous access ports.

Background: Currently, there is no standard of care for prophylactic antibiotics (PABX) at the time of placement of fully implanted central venous access ports (CVAPs). A survey of fellows of the American College of Surgeons was undertaken to determine the current practice pattern of PABX in CVAP placement.

Methods: A survey was mailed to 5,000 fellows of the American College of Surgeons.

Comparison of intraoperative versus delayed enteral feeding tube placement in patients undergoing a Whipple procedure.

Background: The intraoperative placement of an enteral feeding tube (FT) during pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) is based on the surgeon's perception of need for postoperative nutrition. Published preoperative risk factors predicting postoperative morbidity may be used to predict FT need and associated intraoperative placement.

Methods: A retrospective review of patients who underwent PD during 2005-2011 was performed by querying the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database with specific procedure codes.

Mediator regulates non-coding RNA transcription at fission yeast centromeres.

Background: In fission yeast, centromeric heterochromatin is necessary for the fidelity of chromosome segregation. Propagation of heterochromatin in dividing cells requires RNA interference (RNAi) and transcription of centromeric repeats by RNA polymerase II during the S phase of the cell cycle.

Objectives: Osteoradionecrosis is a significant complication following head and neck radiotherapy. The purpose of this study was to determine the intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) dosages delivered to the tooth-bearing regions of the mandible.

Study Design: A total of 28 patients with base of tongue cancer with the following stages: T1-2/N2-3 (n = 10), T3-4/N2-3 (n = 10), and T1-4/N0 (n = 8), treated with IMRT, were included.

A comparison of postoperative outcomes utilizing a continuous preperitoneal infusion versus epidural for midline laparotomy.

Background: Postoperative pain management with a continuous preperitoneal infusion (CPI) for locoregional anesthesia has been shown to have improved postoperative outcomes. This is the first direct comparison of CPI versus epidural infusion (EPI), both in conjunction with systemic analgesia.

Methods: A retrospective review was performed of midline laparotomy cases, comparing the use of CPI with systemic patient-controlled analgesia to EPI with systemic patient-controlled analgesia for postoperative outcomes.

An evaluation of the interference of hydroxycobalamin with chemistry and co-oximetry tests on nine commonly used instruments.

The administration of hydroxocobalamin (OHCob), alone or with sodium thiosulfate, is a standard therapy for cyanide poisoning. OHCob is a red chromophore, and its interference with co-oximetric and colorimetric laboratory measurements has been evaluated in a few conflicting reports. The interference of OHCob was investigated in samples spiked with 10 different concentrations of OHCob (0-1500 mg/L).

Success in sentinel lymph node procedures in obese patients with breast cancer.

Background: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy for axillary staging in breast cancer is technically more demanding but of added benefit in obese patients. This retrospective review compares variables and outcomes of SLN staging in obese and nonobese women.

Methods: From 235 total SLN cases, demographics and clinical and procedural variables were collected and compared in obese (body mass index [BMI] of ≥ 35, n = 28) and nonobese (BMI ≤ 25 [n = 84]) patients.

A comparison of infusion volumes in the measurement of intra-abdominal pressure.

Bladder pressure measurement through a foley catheter is the current standard in monitoring for intraabdominal hypertension (IAH) and abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS). Accurate pressure transduction requires a continuous fluid column with a small volume of transducing medium at the tip of the catheter. Infusing excessive fluid volume can falsely elevate the measured intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) due to bladder overdistention and can lead to intrinsic muscular contraction.
