Real-world data on anatomically localized psoriasis and its response to systemic therapy across different age-groups and sexes is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the severity and distribution of psoriasis over time in female and male patients receiving systemic therapies, categorized by age within the Swiss psoriasis registry (SDNTT). Patient-data was obtained over 11 years through the SDNTT.

Background: Dermatologic conditions are estimated to account worldwide for approximately 8% of all visits at emergency departments (EDs). Although rarely life-threatening, several dermatologic emergencies may have a high morbidity. Little is known about ED consultations of patients with dermatological emergencies and their subsequent hospital disposal.

  • Female androgenetic alopecia (FAGA) is the most common type of hair loss in women, showing a patterned progression in hair thinning.
  • Various oral treatments, including spironolactone and reduced androgen activity medications, can help manage FAGA, but concerns exist about their use in women with past gynecological cancers.
  • A review indicates that spironolactone is generally safe for treating FAGA, even for high-risk patients, but more research is needed to determine the safety of other treatments for those with gynecologic cancer histories.

Introduction: Tattooing has a rich historical presence in various human civilizations, with the earliest physical evidence dating back to around 3258 BC. While acceptance of tattoos is increasing in the Western world, negative associations remain. Short-pulsed lasers, such as Q-Switched (QS) or picosecond lasers, are the gold standard for tattoo removal.

  • Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a rare and challenging skin disorder marked by specific skin lesions, and while some cases resolve on their own, treatment options can be limited.
  • A case study of a 71-year-old patient with stubborn PRP demonstrated significant improvement with a tailored adalimumab treatment plan, adjusting the medication intervals for better efficacy.
  • The addition of montelukast—known for its role in the condition's mechanism—helped maintain treatment success, suggesting that further research is needed to explore these optimized treatment strategies.

Article Synopsis
  • * There are several factors that increase the chances of getting PPP, like being a woman, smoking, being obese, and certain medications, especially TNF-α inhibitors.
  • * Treating PPP can be tricky, but some patients find help with creams, light therapy, and medications like retinoids or特殊 drugs like TNF-α inhibitors, while newer treatments like IL-17 and IL-23 blockers show promise but need more studies.

cSCC (cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma) and its precursors are a major cause of morbidity, especially in immunosuppressed patients, and are frequently associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infections. The purpose of this study is to investigate the therapeutic potential of alpha-HPV vaccination for immunosuppressed patients with established cSCC and its precursors. In this retrospective study, all patients who received Gardasil-9, a nonavalent HPV vaccine, as secondary prophylaxis were examined.

This investigation demonstrates the use of dimethyl fumarate (DMF) for the treatment of disseminated granuloma annulare (GAD), a rare and chronic inflammatory skin disease. In this case, progressive GAD was treated with DMF, resulting in significant improvement of skin lesions within 5 weeks and complete healing within 7 months. Clinical response was associated with a reduction in inflammatory cells, including both T cell subsets (CD4+ > CD8+), CD183/CXCR3 cells, Langerhans cells (CD1a+), myeloid DCs, M1- and M2-like macrophages and the activation marker HLA-DR in immunohistochemical analysis.

Efficient management of basal cell carcinomas (BCC) requires reliable assessments of both tumors and post-treatment scars. We aimed to estimate image similarity metrics that account for BCC's perceptual color and texture deviation from perilesional skin. In total, 176 clinical photographs of BCC were assessed by six physicians using a visual deviation scale.

Background: Due to relapsing nature of melasma with significant impact on quality of life, an objective measurement score is warranted, especially to follow-up the patients with melasma and their therapy response in a quantitative and precise manner.

Aims: To prove concordance of skin hyperpigmentation index (SHI) with well-established scores in melasma and demonstrate its superiority regarding inter-rater reliability. Development of SHI mapping for its integration in common scores.

Background: Acne vulgaris is one of the most common dermatological diseases, especially in adolescents and young adults.

Objective: The current study aimed to compare teledermatology versus face-to-face consultation in the follow-up of patients with mild-to-moderate acne.

Methods: In this investigator-initiated, parallel arms, open-label, randomized clinical trial, after screening, participants were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to be followed up through teledermatology or standard face-to-face consultations for a period of 6 months.

  • Recent studies highlight the effectiveness of JAK-inhibitors (JAK-I) for treating alopecia areata (AA), but their safety in patients is still under-researched.
  • A systematic review conducted in August 2022 analyzed data from 28 studies involving 1,719 patients to evaluate the adverse events (AEs) linked to six different JAK-I medications.
  • Most AEs were mild, with a low withdrawal rate due to side effects; however, laboratory abnormalities and increased infection rates were noted, along with isolated severe cases, but no fatalities were reported.

Interleukin-1 (IL-1)-blocking therapies are effective in reducing disease severity and inflammation in Schnitzler syndrome. Here, we present a patient with Schnitzler syndrome treated successfully using canakinumab for over 10 years. Complete clinical response was associated with a decrease in dermal neutrophil number and expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-8, and IL-17 as assessed by immunohistochemical studies.

Background: Limited data exist to predict the development of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) in patients with psoriasis (PsO).

Objective: To analyze factors associated with incident PsA in patients with PsO, and to develop a predictive algorithm for progression to arthritis using a full set of variables and a restricted one applicable to administrative data.

Methods: Cohort study within the PsoReal registry in Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • After sclerotherapy (a treatment for varicose veins), skin darkening (hyperpigmentation) can happen, especially when using polidocanol, which is a medicine used in the treatment.
  • A review found that the chance of this side effect increases with higher concentrations of polidocanol, particularly for certain types of veins.
  • The study showed that this skin darkening can last a long time, sometimes over a year, and may depend on other factors like how much medicine is used and if compression therapy is applied afterwards.

Purpose: Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) is a severe delayed drug hypersensitivity reaction with exanthema, eosinophilia, and organ manifestations. After culprit drug withdrawal, systemic corticosteroids (CS) are the most widely used treatment, often requiring high doses for months. Blocking the IL-5/IL‑5 receptor axis with mepolizumab, reslizumab, and benralizumab is a promising targeted treatment with a good safety profile and no immunosuppressive effect.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the long-term effects of dose spacing (DS) in psoriasis patients treated with adalimumab, focusing on clinical outcomes and levels of the drug, TNFα, and anti-drug antibodies (ADA).
  • Seven patients who received adalimumab from 2010 to 2021 were included, with all patients initially having the dosing interval extended to three weeks, and some to four weeks.
  • Results showed that most patients maintained low disease activity, experienced significant drug savings, had stable drug levels, undetectable TNFα, and negative ADA, indicating effective DS management for psoriasis.
