This study aimed to validate the S/D plasma thawing process using the latest-generation of commercially-available thawing devices and to determine S/D plasma quality after thawing.

Background: Sex differences in the symptomatology of adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have often been overlooked when studying behavioral abnormalities. However, it is known that women exhibit considerably more stronger symptoms related to emotional competence than men. Since affective functions significantly influence the processing of risky decision-making and risk-engagement, we assume that risky behavior in ADHD is affected by sex differences.

Introduction: Sepsis remains the major cause of death among hospitalised patients in intensive care. While targeting sepsis-causing pathogens with source control or antimicrobials has had a dramatic impact on morbidity and mortality of sepsis patients, this strategy remains insufficient for about one-third of the affected individuals who succumb. Pharmacological targeting of mechanisms that reduce sepsis-defining organ dysfunction may be beneficial.

The formation of red discolorations ('blood stains') on the Turin Shroud (TS), a Christian relic believed to be the burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth, is controversially discussed. We performed experiments to identify possible explanations for the formation of the stains on the hands and forearms of the Turin Shroud Man (TSM). In preliminary non-standardised experiments, after applying blood to the dorsal and palmar side of the probands' wrists, they moved their arms around at their own discretion to provoke blood flows as similar as possible to those on the TS.

Gravitational Waves from a Core g Mode in Supernovae as Probes of the High-Density Equation of State.

Using relativistic supernova simulations of massive progenitor stars with a quark-hadron equation of state (EOS) and a purely hadronic EOS, we identify a distinctive feature in the gravitational-wave signal that originates from a buoyancy-driven mode (g mode) below the proto-neutron star convection zone. The mode frequency lies in the range 200≲f≲800  Hz and decreases with time. As the mode lives in the core of the proto-neutron star, its frequency and power are highly sensitive to the EOS, in particular the sound speed around twice saturation density.

A metal-poor star with abundances from a pair-instability supernova.

The most massive and shortest-lived stars dominate the chemical evolution of the pre-galactic era. On the basis of numerical simulations, it has long been speculated that the mass of such first-generation stars was up to several hundred solar masses. The very massive first-generation stars with a mass range from 140 to 260 solar masses are predicted to enrich the early interstellar medium through pair-instability supernovae (PISNe).

Background: Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is often associated with risky decision-making behavior. However, current research studies are often limited by the ability to adequately reflect daily behavior in a laboratory setting. Over the lifespan impairments in cognitive functions appear to improve, whereas affective functions become more severe.

Implementing a Screening and Brief Intervention Protocol for Excessive Alcohol Use in a Trauma Center: A Healthcare Improvement Project.

Objective: The aim of this healthcare improvement project was to evaluate healthcare provider use of screening and brief interventions (SBIs) for patients screening positive for alcohol at an upper Midwestern adult trauma center transitioning from Level II to Level I.

Method: Trauma registry data for 2,112 adult patients with trauma who screened positive for alcohol were compared between three periods: pre-formal-SBI protocol (January 1, 2010, to November 29, 2011); first post-SBI protocol (February 6, 2012, to April 17, 2016) after protocol implementation, healthcare provider training, and documentation changes; and second post-SBI protocol (June 1, 2016, to June, 30, 2019) after additional training and process improvements. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and logistic regression for comparisons over time and between admitting services.

Frozen and freeze-dried solvent/detergent treated plasma: Two different pharmaceutical formulations with comparable quality.

Background: OctaplasLG is a frozen solvent/detergent-treated plasma product used for treating complex coagulation factor deficiencies or as substitution therapy in emergency situations where specific factor concentrates are not available. A new freeze-dried (also known as lyophilized) form of OctaplasLG, referred as OctaplasLG Lyo (Octapharma AG, Switzerland) offers rapid reconstitution and more flexible storage conditions, improving logistics and utilization. This study compared the biochemical quality of OctaplasLG Lyo with OctaplasLG and single-donor fresh frozen plasma units.

Cortical layers emerge during development and defects in the developmental programs that orchestrate cortical lamination are associated with neurodevelopmental diseases. The developmental principle of cortical layer formation depends on concerted radial projection neuron migration, from their birthplace to their final target position.

Advancement of Photospheric Radius Expansion and Clocked Type-I X-Ray Burst Models with the New ^{22}Mg(α,p)^{25}Al Reaction Rate Determined at the Gamow Energy.

We report the first (in)elastic scattering measurement of ^{25}Al+p with the capability to select and measure in a broad energy range the proton resonances in ^{26}Si contributing to the ^{22}Mg(α,p) reaction at type I x-ray burst energies. We measured spin-parities of four resonances above the α threshold of ^{26}Si that are found to strongly impact the ^{22}Mg(α,p) rate. The new rate advances a state-of-the-art model to remarkably reproduce light curves of the GS 1826-24 clocked burster with mean deviation <9% and permits us to discover a strong correlation between the He abundance in the accreting envelope of the photospheric radius expansion burster and the dominance of ^{22}Mg(α,p) branch.

A genome-wide library of MADM mice for single-cell genetic mosaic analysis.

Mosaic analysis with double markers (MADM) offers one approach to visualize and concomitantly manipulate genetically defined cells in mice with single-cell resolution. MADM applications include the analysis of lineage, single-cell morphology and physiology, genomic imprinting phenotypes, and dissection of cell-autonomous gene functions in vivo in health and disease. Yet, MADM can only be applied to <25% of all mouse genes on select chromosomes to date.

New ^{59}Fe Stellar Decay Rate with Implications for the ^{60}Fe Radioactivity in Massive Stars.

The discrepancy between observations from γ-ray astronomy of the ^{60}Fe/^{26}Al γ-ray flux ratio and recent calculations is an unresolved puzzle in nuclear astrophysics. The stellar β-decay rate of ^{59}Fe is one of the major nuclear uncertainties impeding us from a precise prediction. The important Gamow-Teller strengths from the low-lying states in ^{59}Fe to the ^{59}Co ground state are measured for the first time using the exclusive measurement of the ^{59}Co(t,^{3}He+γ)^{59}Fe charge-exchange reaction.

Family satisfaction in a neuro trauma ICU.

Objective: The purpose of this quality improvement initiative was to evaluate satisfaction of family members of patients in a neuro trauma ICU (NTICU).

Methods: Adult patients (age 18+) admitted to the NTICU for at least 24 hours between June 2017 and November 2018 were identified. Near or at the time of discharge from the NTICU, the health unit coordinator or registered nurse identified the family member who was either the next-of-kin, surrogate decision-maker, or person who had been most frequently present at the patient's bedside.

Introduction: Respiratory rate is the first sign of patient decline. Monitoring and recording respiratory rate are essential nursing competencies. However, health care system emergency nurses' ability to differentiate normal from abnormal respiratory rates was unknown.

A wide star-black-hole binary system from radial-velocity measurements.

All stellar-mass black holes have hitherto been identified by X-rays emitted from gas that is accreting onto the black hole from a companion star. These systems are all binaries with a black-hole mass that is less than 30 times that of the Sun. Theory predicts, however, that X-ray-emitting systems form a minority of the total population of star-black-hole binaries.
