Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify factors that predict ongoing disease activity in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) after receiving treatments with anti-VEGF medications in real-world settings.
  • A retrospective analysis of the PROOF study included data from 600 treatment-naive patients who received their first anti-VEGF treatment between 2017 and 2019, with follow-ups at 12 and 24 months.
  • Results showed that a significant percentage of patients still experienced retinal fluid at 12 and 24 months, with fibrovascular pigment epithelial detachments and persistent retinal fluid after the initial treatment phase being strong predictors of ongoing disease activity.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored the role of specific microRNAs (miRNAs) and inflammasomes in retinal cells affected by diabetes, focusing on diabetic retinopathy (DR).
  • Researchers created a diabetes cell model using ARPE-19 cells treated with high glucose and analyzed the expression of several miRNAs and inflammasome proteins.
  • The results showed that high glucose reduced miRNA levels while increasing inflammasome components, but introducing the miR-17 mimic lowered inflammasome expression, suggesting potential new treatment targets for DR.

Article Synopsis
  • * The results showed that patients with DME had higher extracellular fluid ratios and lower phase angles compared to those without DME or with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR).
  • * Notably, the presence of multiple hyper-reflective foci (HRF) on OCT was linked to worse fluid profiles, indicating a potential connection between systemic fluid status and DME severity that needs further investigation.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate whether severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) could be an association factor for neurodevelopmental disorders in premature infants without other risk factors-such as congenital anomalies, birth injuries, and neurological diseases-that may cause developmental delay.

Methods: We used health claims data recorded between 2007 and 2018 in the Korean National Health Insurance Service (KNHIS) database. We recruited a total of 18,256 premature infant born between 2007 and 2008 without congenital anomaly or birth injury (with ROP 6,995, without ROP 11,261) and divided them into four groups as follows: Group A, 209 extremely premature infants [gestational age (GA) < 28] with mild ROP; Group B, 75 extremely premature infants (GA < 28) with severe ROP; Group C, 6,510 other premature infants (28 ≤ GA <37)with mild ROP; and Group D, 201 other premature infants (28 ≤ GA < 37) with severe ROP.
