Characterization of the development of the high-acuity area of the chick retina.

The fovea is a small region within the central retina that is responsible for our high acuity daylight vision. Chickens also have a high acuity area (HAA), and are one of the few species that enables studies of the mechanisms of HAA development, due to accessible embryonic tissue and methods to readily perturb gene expression. To enable such studies, we characterized the development of the chick HAA using single molecule fluorescent in situ hybridization (smFISH), along with more classical methods.

Various lethal stresses, including bactericidal antibiotics, can trigger the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that contribute to killing. Incomplete base excision repair (BER) of oxidized nucleotides, especially 8-oxo-dG, has been identified as a major component of ROS-induced lethality. However, the relative contributions of this pathway to death vary widely between stresses, due in part to poorly understood complex differences in the physiological changes caused by these stresses.

In recent years, there has been an alarming increase in the incidence of diabetes, with one in every eleven individuals worldwide suffering from this debilitating disease. As the available treatment options fail to reduce disease progression, novel avenues such as the bioartificial pancreas are being given serious consideration. In the past decade, the research focus has shifted towards the field of tissue engineering, which helps to design biological substitutes for repair and replacement of non-functional or damaged organs.
