Chemoselective Adsorption of Allyl Ethers on Si(001): How the Interaction between Two Functional Groups Controls the Reactivity and Final Products of a Surface Reaction.

Selective adsorption of multifunctional molecules is rarely observed when the different functional groups react via nonactivated reaction channels. Although the latter is also the case for ether cleavage and the adsorption of C=C double bonds on the highly reactive Si(001) surface, we find that allyl ethers, which combine both functional groups, react on Si(001) selectively via the cleavage of the molecules' ether group. In addition, our XPS measurements at 90, 150, and 300 K indicate an increased reactivity of the ether group when compared to monofunctional ethers.

A New Citrinin Derivative from the Indonesian Marine Sponge-Associated Fungus .

Sponge-associated fungi are attractive targets for the isolation of bioactive natural products with different pharmaceutical purposes. In this investigation, 20 fungi were isolated from 10 different sponge specimens. One isolate, the fungus strain WK-P9, showed activity against JH642 when cultivated in malt extract medium.

Combination of Thin-Layer Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry Using Cluster-Induced Desorption/Ionization.

Desorption/ionization induced by neutral clusters (DINeC) was employed for mass spectrometry (MS) of oligopeptides and lipids after separation by means of thin-layer chromatography (TLC). Clear and fragmentation-free spectra were obtained from the TLC plates without any further sample treatment. Mass-resolved chromatograms were deduced when scanning the TLC plates with the cluster beam along the direction of solvent movement.

Identification and Functional Characterization of a Novel Insecticidal Decapeptide from the Myrmicine Ant .

Ant venoms contain many small, linear peptides, an untapped source of bioactive peptide toxins. The control of agricultural insect pests currently depends primarily on chemical insecticides, but their intensive use damages the environment and human health, and encourages the emergence of resistant pest populations. Proteomic Analysis of the Venom from the Ruby Ant and the Isolation of a Novel Insecticidal Decapeptide.

Ants are a biodiverse group of insects that have evolved toxic venom containing many undiscovered bioactive molecules. In this study, we found that the venom of the ruby ant is a rich source of peptides. LC-MS analysis revealed the presence of 142 different peptides varying in molecular weight, sequence length, and hydrophobicity.

Formation of Si/organic interfaces using alkyne-functionalized cyclooctynes-precursor-mediated adsorption of linear alkynes versus direct adsorption of cyclooctyne on Si(0 0 1).

Adsorption of ethynyl-cyclopropyl-cyclooctyne (ECCO), an alkyne-functionalized cyclooctyne, on Si(0 0 1) was studied by means of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Together, XPS and STM results clearly indicate chemoselective adsorption of ECCO on Si(0 0 1) via a [2+2] cycloaddition of the strained triple bond of cyclooctyne without reaction of the ethynyl group. The results are compared to the adsorption of acetylene on Si(0 0 1): CH adsorbs on Si(0 0 1) via a precursor-mediated reaction channel as it was shown by means of temperature dependent measurements of the sticking probability as well as by means of STM experiments at variable temperature.

A case of a fetus affected with craniosynostosis, unilateral renal agenesis and gastroschisis is reported. The propositus was delivered on the 19th week of gestation for premature rupture of the membranes. Macroscopy showed turricephaly, shallow orbits, exophthalmos, hypertelorism, hypoplastic maxilla with relative mandibular prognathism and gastroschisis.

In 120 patients suffering from carcinoma of the endometrium of a wide variety of histological types, conventional clinical and morphological criteria of prognosis were compared with the DNA index (DI) and the S-phase fraction.
