Background: Hypertension is highly prevalent among patients who visit primary care clinics. Various factors and lifestyle behaviors are associated with effective blood pressure control. We aimed to identify factors and lifestyle modifications associated with blood pressure control among patients prescribed antihypertensive agents.

Myostatin (MSTN) is a potent negative regulator of skeletal muscle mass. The activity of MSTN is suppressed by MSTN propeptide (MSTNPro), the N-terminal part of unprocessed MSTN that is cleaved off during posttranslational MSTN processing. Easy availability of MSTNPro would help to investigate the potential of the protein as an agent to enhance muscle growth in agricultural animal species.

Ursodeoxycholic acid inhibits pro-inflammatory repertoires, IL-1 beta and nitric oxide in rat microglia.

Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is a non-toxic, hydrophilic bile acid in widespread clinical use mainly for acute and chronic liver disease. Recently, treatment with UDCA in hepatic graft-versus-host disease has been given in immunosuppressive therapy for improvement of the biochemical markers of cholestasis. Moreover, it has been reported that UDCA possesses immunomodulatory effects by the suppression of cytokine production.

Butein suppresses myofibroblastic differentiation of rat hepatic stellate cells in primary culture.

Hepatic stellate cells play a key role in the pathogenesis of hepatic fibrosis. In this study, we investigate the inhibitory effect of butein on the activation and proliferation of rat primary cultured hepatic stellate cells. Possible cytotoxic effects were measured on stellate cells and hepatocytes using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay.

Immunoactivation of lectin-conjugated praecoxin A on IL-6, IL-12 expression.

Lectin-conjugated praecoxin A is a compound, which is combined Wheat Germ Agglutinin (WGA) Lectin with praecoxin A and also known to have an anti-tumor activity. In our lab, in order to investigate its immune reaction other than the anti-tumor activity ever known, we examined cytokines such as IL-6 and IL-12 through their mRNA expressions, which are generally secreted by macrophage both in vivo and in vitro. To analyze, we used RT-PCR for total RNAs of macrophages.

Curcumin inhibits collagen synthesis and hepatic stellate cell activation in-vivo and in-vitro.

We previously demonstrated that curcumin, a well-known antioxidant, inhibits collagen deposition in carbon tetrachloride-induced liver injury in rats. The major effector cells responsibleforcollagensynthesis in the liver are activated hepatic stellate cells. In this study,we investigated the inhibitory effects of curcumin on the collagen synthesis and activation of rat hepatic stellate cells in-vitro, and on hepatic stellate cell activation in-vivo.
