Gestational Weight Gain (GWG) modulates pregnancy outcomes and long-term offspring metabolic health. The 2009 Institute of Medicine (IOM) GWG recommendations have largely been validated in Caucasian and mono-ethnic East Asian cohorts. Asians are at higher metabolic risk at a lower body mass index (BMI), and this has prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to identify lower BMI cut-offs for risk evaluation amongst Asians.

Background: A previous study had established the safety and preserved of quality of life in patients with adrenal insufficiency (AI) who received prednisolone 5 mg once daily at sahur (predawn) during Ramadan fasting. It has been postulated that a lower dose of prednisolone between 2 and 3 mg may be sufficient for glucocorticoid replacement in this group of patients. This study aimed to assess the safety and effect on quality of life in patients with AI given prednisolone 2.

Article Synopsis
  • Primary diabetes care and diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening face challenges due to a lack of trained primary care physicians, especially in low-resource areas.
  • The integrated image-language system, DeepDR-LLM, combines a language model and deep learning to help PCPs provide tailored diabetes management recommendations, showing comparable or better accuracy than PCPs in diagnosing DR.
  • In a study, patients assisted by DeepDR-LLM demonstrated improved self-management and adherence to referral recommendations, indicating that the system enhances both care quality and patient outcomes.

People with type 2 diabetes mellitus have increased risk of chronic kidney disease and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Improved care delivery and implementation of guideline-directed medical therapy have contributed to the declining incidence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in high-income countries. By contrast, the global incidence of chronic kidney disease and associated mortality is either plateaued or increased, leading to escalating direct and indirect medical costs.

Introduction: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and association between the severity of COVID-19 and short and long-term neuropsychiatric symptoms, as well as the risk factors for the development of these symptoms.

Materials And Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted between 1st October 2021 till September 2022 in the state of Johor, Malaysia. 300 patients with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection were randomly selected and followed up for six months.

Objective: Once daily prednisolone taken at predawn has been proposed to be the glucocorticoid replacement of choice in patients with adrenal insufficiency (AI) who intend to fast for the month of Ramadan. However, the effects of prednisolone on metabolic parameters and quality of life during fasting for Ramadan are unknown.

Design, Patients And Measurements: Patients with AI on twice-daily hydrocortisone, who had low or moderate risk and intended to fast, were recruited.

The identification of peptides and proteins from tandem mass spectra is a difficult task and multiple tools have been developed to aid this identification. We present a new method called quantum chemical mass spectrometry for materials science (QCMS ), which is based on quantum chemical calculations of bond orders, reaction, and transition-state energies at the DFT/B3LYP/6-311+G* level of theory. The method was used to describe the fragmentation pathways of five X-His-Ser tripeptides with X = Asn, Asp, Glu, Ser, and Trp, thereby focusing on the influence of the side chain and inter-side-chain interactions on the fragmentation.

Quality of life is a concern for people living with diagnoses of persistent mental illness. While some studies with this community of people have measured quality of life as an indicator of adjustment, little is known about the meaning of quality of life from the perspectives of these individuals themselves. The project described in this practice column explored the meaning of quality of life for a group of persons attending a community centre for persons with mental illness.
