A collection of 482 tetraploid wheat accessions from the CIMMYT Germplasm Bank was screened in the greenhouse for resistance to leaf rust disease caused by the fungus E. The accessions were screened against two races CBG/BP and BBG/BP in the field at two locations: against race CBG/BP at the Norman E. Borlaug Experimental Station (CENEB) located in the Yaqui Valley in the northern state of Sonora in Mexico during the 2014-2015 growing season; and against race BBG/BP at CIMMYT headquarters in El Batan, Texcoco, in the state of Mexico in the summer of 2015.

Article Synopsis
  • Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) significantly impacts small grain cereals, leading to yield losses and food safety issues due to contamination with mycotoxins.
  • Research on FHB in Mexico has been limited, but a study conducted on isolates from 2013 and 2014 identified five species complexes with significant regional variations in pathogen composition.
  • F. boothii was dominant in the Mixteca region, while F. avenaceum predominated in the Highlands; however, F. graminearum, a key pathogen in North America, was absent in Mexican isolates.
