Mercury (Hg) is a pervasive contaminant that can adversely affect predatory wildlife. Bird eggs provide insights into breeding females' Hg burdens, and are easily collected and archived. We present data on Hg trends in herring gull (Larus argentatus) eggs from five sites in Atlantic Canada from 1972 to 2008.

Context includes epidemiologic context (for example, a pandemic period) and personal context (for example, recent exposure to other patients with FRI).
Objective: To examine the association between contextual factors and antimicrobial prescribing for FRI.
Catatonia is a manifestation of several psychiatric disorders, but may also be secondary to a systemic medical condition. Fahr's disease is characterized by radiographic calcifications of the basal ganglia. While diverse neuropsychiatric symptoms have been reported in Fahr's disease, few reports of catatonia in this condition exist.

Until recently, the diversity of the cutaneous microbiota was mainly investigated for bacteria through culture based assays subsequently confirmed by molecular techniques. There are now many evidences that viruses represent a significant part of the cutaneous flora as demonstrated by the asymptomatic carriage of beta and gamma-human papillomaviruses on the healthy skin.

The sensitive thermal measurement is based on the 3ω dynamic method coupled to a Völklein geometry. The device obtained using micro-machining processes allows the measurement of the in-plane thermal conductivity of a membrane with a sensitivity of less than 10 nW/K (+∕-5 × 10(-3) Wm(-1) K(-1) at room temperature) and a very high resolution (ΔK/K = 10(-3)).

High universal vaccination coverage is responsible for substantially reducing or nearly eliminating many of the diseases that once killed thousands of children each year in the US. Despite the success of infant vaccinations, periods of low vaccination coverage and the limited immunogenicity and duration of protection of certain vaccines have resulted in sporadic outbreaks, allowing some diseases to spread in communities.

Fourteen polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners and 20 non-PBDE FRs were analyzed, but BDE-47, -99, -100, -153, -154 and -209, hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and Dechlorane Plus (DP) syn- and anti-isomers were common, and where concentrations of ∑PBDEs (37-610 ng/g wet weight, ww) ≫ HBCD (0.5-12 ng/g ww) > ∑DP (not quantifiable-5.

We aimed to develop and demonstrate a novel empiric prescribing decision aid.
Design/setting: This is a demonstration involving more than 9,000 unique encounters for abdominal-biliary infection (ABI) and urinary tract infection (UTI) to a large healthcare system with a fully integrated electronic health record (EHR).
By applying an external electric field across a micropore via an electrolyte, metal ions in the electrolyte can be reduced locally onto the inner wall of the micropore, which was fabricated in a silica-covered silicon membrane. This maskless metal deposition on the silica surface is a result of the pore membrane polarization in the electric field.

The optical and electrical properties of these mixed-phase nanomaterials can be tuned independently, allowing for advanced light management in high efficiency thin-film silicon solar cells and for band-gap tuning via quantum confinement in third-generation photovoltaics.

Previously, we have shown that Cx43 can enhance the signaling and transcriptional response to fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) in osteoblasts by increasing protein kinase C-δ (PKCδ) activation to affect Runx2 activity. In the present study, we show by luciferase reporter assays that the ERK signaling cascade acts in parallel to PKCδ to modulate Runx2 activity downstream of the Cx43-dependent amplification of FGF2 signaling.

Today glutamine supplementation is recommended to ICU patients on parenteral nutrition. In addition to glutamine, glutathione may be a limiting factor in ICU patients with MOF (multiple organ failure).

Null models that systematically exclude and include habitat effects can give information on the contribution of these factors to community assembly. In the boreal forest, saproxylic beetles are known to be attracted to recently burned forests where they breed in dead and dying trees.

Samples were analyzed from fifteen collection years including 1990 and all years from 1997 to 2010, and from seven colonies located throughout the Great Lakes, ranging from remote to highly urbanized areas. Other than at the Toronto Harbour colony, the slopes of ∑PFSA concentrations (C(6), C(8), and C(10)) versus time were negative indicating general declines between 1990 and 2010.

Diet, physical activity, and stress reduction may affect tumor promotion and disease progression.
Methods: A randomized trial of an intensive diet, physical activity, and meditation intervention was conducted in men with rising post-treatment PSA after definitive treatment for PrCA.
Exposure to high concentrations of hexavalent chromium (Cr[VI]) in drinking water is reported to induce oral mucosa tumors in F344 rats and intestinal tumors in B6C3F1 mice. To investigate the modes of action underlying these tumors, 90-day drinking water studies (with interim necropsy at day 8) were conducted with concentrations of 0.1-182 mg/l Cr(VI), administered as 0.

Patients And Methods: This phase I study was designed to define the maximum-tolerated dose (MTD), dose-limiting toxicity (DLT) and recommended dose of all-oral tegafur-uracil (UFT)/folinic acid combined with vinorelbine as chemotherapy for MBC. Starting doses were 40 mg/m(2)/week of oral vinorelbine administered continuously and 250 mg/m(2)/day of UFT plus 90 mg/day of folinic acid from day 1 to day 28, followed by a 1-week rest period.
The standard treatment for head and neck inoperable squamous cell carcinoma is an association of radiotherapy and platinum. However, only one patient out of three remains alive five years after diagnosis. The interest in induction chemotherapy was renewed by the introduction of taxanes combined with cisplatinum and 5-fluoro-uracile.

While Osx can act at canonical Sp1 DNA-binding sites and/or interact with NFATc1 to cooperatively regulate transcription in some osteoblast promoters, little is known about the molecular details by which Osx regulates osteocalcin (OCN) transcription. We previously identified in the OCN proximal promoter a minimal C/T-rich motif, termed OCN-CxRE (connexin-response element) that binds Sp1 and Sp3 in a gap junction-dependent manner.

Our research seeks to develop laser-based separations that do not rely on prior knowledge, antibodies, or fluorescent molecules for pathogen detection. Rather, we aim to harness inherent differences in optical pressure, which arise from variations in particle size, shape, refractive index, or morphology, as a means of separating and characterizing particles.

This goal is realized by filling SWNTs ("pods") with a series of oligothiophene molecules ("peas"). The physical properties of these peapods are depicted by using aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and other optical methods including steady-state and time-resolved measurements.
