Purpose: Lower lip squamous cell carcinomas (LLSCCs) exhibit lower levels of aggressiveness, low relations with metastases and better prognosis when compared with intraoral squamous cell carcinomas. Differently from the oral tongue squamous cell carcinomas (OTSCCs) have a high tendency towards local invasion and lymph nodal dissemination. Our aim was to evaluate tumor thickness in cases of oral squamous cell carcinoma and correlate it with histological grade of malignancy and GATA3 immunoreactivity.

Changes in the expression of nuclear β-catenin are responsible for tumorigenesis. Beta-catenin acts synergistically with the TGF-β/BMPs pathway. This interaction leads to greater dentin deposition and may explain the differences between distinct tooth morphologies and hamartomas.

Tooth development depends on a series of reciprocal signaling interactions between the oral epithelium and ectomesenchyme. This study aimed to investigate the role of CK14, a protein involved in Wnt-1/β-catenin signaling, in odontogenesis and the development of odontomas. This cross-sectional, retrospective, immunohistochemical study analyzed 30 compound odontomas, 30 complex odontomas, and 17 tooth germs.

Article Synopsis
  • Verruciform xanthoma (VX) is a rare, benign lesion often found in the mouth, characterized by its painless, rough appearance and varying colors, typically affecting the gingiva and alveolar mucosa.
  • A clinical case is reported involving VX in the buccal mucosa that was associated with oral lichen planus, which was confirmed through histopathological analysis showing inflammation and specific cell characteristics.
  • Immunohistochemical tests indicated the presence of lipid-laden macrophages (xanthoma cells) in the VX, and the patient is currently being monitored with no recurrence of the VX but has ongoing lesions from lichen planus.

Objective: To aim of this systematic review was to explore the relationship between Human papillomavirus (HPV) and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) related to the prognosis of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC).

Design: For this systematic review, searches were performed in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Science Direct, and Cochrane, and a random-effects model was used for meta-analysis. The presence of EMT was confirmed by the loss of E-cadherin immunoexpression and overexpression of vimentin.

Inflammatory periapical lesions are characterized by infiltration of different immune cell types, the functions of which depend on an effective vascular network. This study aimed to evaluate the mast cells density (MCD) in inflamatory odontogenic cysts capsules concerning microvascular density (MVD), microvascular area (MVA), and microvascular perimeter (MVP), and correlate such findings with the type of lesion, intensity of the inflammatory infiltrate, and thickness of the epithelial lining. Twenty inflamatory dentigerous cysts (IDCs), twenty radicular cysts (RCs), and twenty residual radicular cysts (RRCs) were submitted to immunohistochemical analysis using anti-tryptase and anti-CD34 antibodies.

Langerhans cells (LCs) play important roles in cell-mediated immune reactions, as well as in the pathogenesis of periapical lesions. The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of LCs in the proliferative epithelium of radicular cysts (RCs) and the release of the proinflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) associated with epithelial thickness. Thirty cases of RCs and 30 cases of residual RCs were randomly selected.

Odontomas and ameloblastic fibro-odontomas (AFOs) are the result of a developmental anomaly of odontogenic tissues. A literature review of proteins immunoexpressed in odontomas and AFOs was conducted in order to determine which proteins are involved in the pathogenesis of these lesions. AFO was changed to early odontoma in the 2017 WHO classification and will also be discussed in this article.

Purpose: Cripto-1 also known as teratoma-derived growth factor 1 (TDGF-1) belongs to the EGF-CFC family of growth factor-like molecules. Cripto-1 is involved with embryonic development and not expressed in adult tissue, but some tumours are accompanied by reactivation.

Methods: The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of Cripto-1 in most common odontogenic cysts and tumours.

The aim of this study was to evaluate macrophage M1 and M2 subpopulations in radicular cysts (RCs) and periapical granulomas (PGs) and relate them to clinical and morphological aspects. M1 macrophages were evaluated by the percentage of CD68 immunostaining associated with the inflammatory cytokine TNF-α, and M2 macrophages, by its specific CD163 antibody. The CD68+/CD163+ ratio was adopted to distinguish between the two macrophage subpopulations.
