Acetazolamide (AZ), a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor used for preventing altitude illness attenuates hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV) while improving oxygenation. Methazolamide (MZ), an analog of acetazolamide, is more lipophilic, has a longer half-life, and activates a major antioxidant transcription factor.
