Article Synopsis
  • * Results showed that these systems can achieve over 80% removal rates for various nitrogen types, highlighting sponge iron's potential for environmental applications.
  • * However, prolonged exposure to sponge iron can lead to negative effects on plant health and microbial diversity due to stress from reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Iron is gradually being introduced into constructed wetlands (CWs) to enhance the removal of pollutants due to its active chemical properties and ability to participate in various reactions, but its effectiveness in greenhouse effect control needs to be studied. In this study, three CWs were established to evaluate the effect of iron scraps and iron-carbon as substrates on pollutants removal and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and the corresponding mechanisms were explored through analysis of microbial characteristics. The results showed that iron scraps and iron - carbon are effective in enhancing the effluent quality of CWs.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) stands as a predominant global cause of morbidity and mortality, necessitating effective and cost-efficient therapies for cardiovascular risk reduction. Mitochondrial coupling factor 6 (CF6), identified as a novel proatherogenic peptide, emerges as a significant risk factor in endothelial dysfunction development, correlating with CVD severity. CF6 expression can be heightened by CVD risk factors like mechanical force, hypoxia, or high glucose stimuli through the NF-κB pathway.

Currently, dairy mastitis caused by poses a serious challenge for dairy farming. In this study, we explored the role and mechanism of rhein against with the hope of providing new research ideas to solve mastitis in dairy cows and ensure the source safety of dairy products. Through in vitro antimicrobial studies, we found that the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of rhein was 64 μg/mL, and it significantly interfered with the formation of biofilm at sub-MIC.

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is an important cause of infections associated with implanted medical devices due to the formation of bacterial biofilm, which can prevent the penetration of drugs, thus posing a serious multi-drug resistance. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is one of them.

A transfer-purge chamber (TPC) is a double-steel-plate, heavy-concrete, curved-surface composite structure composed of steel plates, heavy concrete, and shear connectors. It is an important facility in the external refueling system of a nuclear power plant (NPP), providing a safe and reliable biological shielding space for reactor refueling operations. Temperature load is one of the most important factors that must be considered in the design of NPP structures.

This study investigated the decontamination performance of a bioretention system using a sand-based filler constructed using sand and peat soil. The filler was constructed according to a simple proportioning method that considers water turnover time and organic content. Different inorganic constituents were added to the filler including zeolite, volcanic rock, coal slag, vermiculite and perlite to further improve the decontamination effect.

Sesbania gum (SG) was subjected to chemical modification via the first acidolysis followed by cross-linking under maintaining the basic framework of SG particles so that its performances could be well tailored. The modification of SG was preferred for food processing and drug sustained-release agent uses. The experimental results indicated that the size distribution of SG particles was slightly narrowed by the acidolysis, while the size distribution was apparently broadened by cross-linking.
