Total triterpenoids from the fruits of Chaenomeles speciosa(TCS) are active components in the prevention and treatment of gastric mucosal damage, which have potential anti-aging effects. However, it is still unclear whether TCS can improve gastric aging, especially its molecular mechanism against gastric aging. On this basis, this study explored the effect and mechanism of TCS on senescent GES-1 cells induced by D-galactose(D-gal) to provide scientific data for the clinical use of TCS to prevent gastric aging.

Context: Tormentic acid (TA), an effective triterpenoid isolated from (Sweet) Nakai (Rosaceae) fruits, exerts an effective treatment for gastric damage.

Objective: To investigate the gastroprotective effect of TA on indomethacin (IND) damaged GES-1 cells and rats, and explore potential mechanisms.

Materials And Methods: TA concentrations of 1.

This study investigated the protective effect of total triterpenoids from Chaenomeles speciosa against Helicobacter pylori(Hp)-induced gastritis in mice and explored its possible mechanism. The chronic atrophic gastritis(CAG) model mice were randomly divided into four groups of model, total triterpenoids from C. speciosa(50 and 100 mg·kg~(-1)) and triple therapy, with C57 BL/6 J mice without Hp infection taken as the normal group.

Wheat straw biochar (BC) was modified by KOH and magnetics to generate composited modified biochar (FKC). Based on characterization by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and magnetic (VSM) techniques, the adsorption characteristics and mechanisms of Cd in water and the effects of temperature, pH value, and dosage on the adsorption characteristics of FKC were studied. The results showed that the modified biochar was loose and porous.

Purpose: To evaluate the feasibility of arthroscopic reduction percutaneous fixation (ARPF) in the treatment of isolated medial malleolar fracture and compare the results with those of conventional open reduction internal fixation (ORIF).

Methods: This prospective study enrolled 77 patients with isolated medial malleolar fracture between November 2011 and February 2016. The patients were assigned to the ARPF (n = 34) and ORIF (n = 43) groups.

Aged hepatocyte-specific-Mcl-1 knockout (MKO-hep) mice are prone to develop liver tumors mimicking human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Here we reported that a protein named UDP-N-acetylglucosamine pyrophosphorylase-1-like-1 (Uap1l1) is upregulated in the liver of young MKO-hep mice without any macroscopically detectable tumor nodules and is prominently expressed in the hepatic tumors developed in the aged MKO-hep mice. Intriguingly, human UAP1L1 is also significantly upregulated in a distinct subset of HCC tissues and patients with upregulated expression of UAP1L1 appeared to have poor prognosis.

Although () is known to regulate proliferation and differentiation of muscle fibroblasts, the role of in early-stage somite development is still unknown. During somitogenesis of zebrafish embryos, () is specifically repressed by The somite boundary was defective, and actin filaments were crossing over the boundary in either -knockdown or -overexpressed embryos. In these treated embryos, C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 4a () was reduced, while thrombospondin 3a () was increased.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability of high intensity zone (HIZ) and to assess discrepancy in the interpretation, as well as investigate the effects of parameters of HIZ on interobserver variation.

Methods: Four spine surgeons made independent observations on lumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) from 207 consecutive patients from 3 institutions. The κ statistic was used to characterize inter- and intraobserver reliability for visual assessments of HIZ.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the imaging assessment of interspinous ligament degeneration (ISLD) in patients with or without low back pain (LBP).

Methods: Sixty patients with LBP were enrolled in Group A and 60 subjects frequency-matched by age and sex in Group B. An MRI-based grading system for ISLD was scored and ranged from Type A (normal) to Type D (severe).

The biogeochemical cycle of sulfur can directly affect the speciation transformation of heavy metals in soils and their accumulation in plants. The toxicity of heavy metals in plants can be alleviated by their complexation with sulfur compounds like phytochelatins or metallothiones, consisting of the major mechanisms of phytodetoxification. Sulfur deficiency is becoming one of the limiting factors that influence Chinese agricultural production.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on the genetic features of enterovirus 71 (EV71) and the occurrence of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) in Xinxiang during 2011, using real-time RT-PCR for detection.
  • Results showed that EV71 was present in 73% of severe HFMD cases, significantly higher than the 19% for Coxsackievirus A16, indicating EV71's major role in the epidemic.
  • The findings included that most reported HFMD cases (1118 total) were in children under 3 years old, with peak occurrence in April and December, highlighting the need for improved HFMD prevention measures throughout the year.

Objective: To determine differences in paraspinal muscle injury between a modified minimally invasive approach (MMIA) and a traditional operative approach (TOPA) for one-level instrumented posterior lumbar inter-body fusion (PLIF).

Methods: From March 2006 to May 2008, a consecutive series of 91 patients who underwent a one-level instrumented PLIF procedure using one of two different approaches (MMIA in 41 patients and TOPA in 50), and who were operated on by one group of surgeons at a single institution, was studied. The following data were compared between the two groups: surgical time, blood loss, and changes in postoperative serum concentration of creatinine kinase (CK).

Objective: To assess transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) and thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) expression in the cavernous tissue of rats with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes.

Materials And Methods: Twenty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 2 groups: diabetics and controls. We injected STZ intraperitoneally to induce diabetes, and studied the alterations in TGF-beta1 and TSP-1 expression in the cavernous tissue of the 2 groups by immunohistochemistry and real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction.

A pot experiment with 38 commonly cultured rice cultivars showed that the effect of Cu (100 mg kg(-1)) on rice growth, grain yield and accumulation of Cu in brown rice varied greatly with different cultivars. Although the average Cu concentration in brown rice of the 38 cultivars was significantly increased (P<0.01) compared with the control, in none of the cultivars did Cu concentration in brown rice exceed the maximum permissible limit of 10 mg Cu kg(-1).
