Article Synopsis
  • Mosquito-borne diseases like Zika are a big worry because they can seriously affect pregnant women and their babies, especially in poorer countries where not much research is done.
  • Even though millions of people get these diseases, there's not enough information about how they impact pregnant women, which can lead to serious health issues for mothers and babies.
  • It's really important to study these diseases more, create better tests and treatments, and develop vaccines to help protect pregnant women and improve healthcare for everyone around the world.

In French Guiana, life expectancy is between 2 and 3 years below that of France, reflecting differences in mortality rates that are largely sensitive to primary healthcare and thus preventable. However, because poverty affects half of the population in French Guiana, global measurements of life expectancy presumably conflate at least two distinct situations: persons who have similar life expectancies as in mainland France and persons living in precariousness who have far greater mortality rates than their wealthier counterparts. We thus aimed to synthesize what is known about statistical regularities regarding exposures and sketch typical French Guiana exposomes in relation to health outcomes.

  • The study looked at pregnancies in women living with HIV in French Guiana from 1992 to 2022 to understand their outcomes and challenges.
  • Most of the women knew they had HIV before getting pregnant and many received treatment, but a significant number still had babies born with HIV.
  • Although there have been improvements in reducing HIV transmission to babies, there are still issues like premature deliveries and low birth weights that need attention.

In the complex context of French Guiana, different vulnerabilities and different risk factors between genders may lead to complex differences in health outcomes, mortality, and life expectancy. Our aim was, thus, to compare male and female mortality and life expectancy, to compare it between French Guiana and mainland France, and to look at temporal trends and the main specific causes of death in order to identify actionable singularities. National databases were used to obtain life expectancy at birth, at 20, 40, and 60 years, and mortality statistics.

There are great variations between population subgroups, notably in poorer countries, leading to substantial inconsistencies with those predicted by the classical epidemiologic transition theory. In this context, using public data, we aimed to determine how the singular case of French Guiana fit and transitioned in the epidemiologic transition framework. The data show a gradual decline in infant mortality to values above 8 per 1000 live births.

Purpose: The Maroni basin -delineating the border between Suriname and French Guiana- presents sociocultural, geographical and economic circumstances that have been conducive to the circulation of sexually transmitted infections and to delays in diagnosis and care. Given the scarcity of published data, we aimed to describe different sexually transmitted infections along the Maroni and to gain a broader understanding of the epidemiologic situation.

Methods: We conducted a scoping review of the efforts to approach the problem of sexually transmitted infections in this complex border area.

Whether prolonged maternal viremia after Zika virus infection represents a risk factor for maternal-fetal transmission and subsequent adverse outcomes remains unclear. In this prospective cohort study in French Guiana, we enrolled Zika virus-infected pregnant women with a positive PCR result at inclusion and noninfected pregnant women; both groups underwent serologic testing in each trimester and at delivery during January-July 2016. Prolonged viremia was defined as ongoing virus detection >30 days postinfection.

  • A study conducted at the West French Guiana Hospital Center analyzed 507 pregnant women to determine the rates of asymptomatic, mild, and severe COVID-19 among those infected with SARS-CoV-2 at the time of delivery.
  • Among the 137 infected women, 75.2% were asymptomatic upon admission, with some developing symptoms later. The infected group experienced significantly higher rates of post-partum complications compared to uninfected women.
  • Despite the risks of complications, none of the 108 newborns from infected mothers tested positive at birth, although some later showed positive results during follow-up.
