Background: This study aimed to determine the relationship between preoperative arterial calcifications and postoperative outcomes after Ivor Lewis esophagectomies.

Methods: This was a single-center retrospective review of Ivor Lewis esophagectomies from 2013 to 2018. Preoperative CT imaging was reviewed, and arterial calcifications were graded (absent, minor, or major) in various locations.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to identify risk factors for anastomotic leak (AL) after minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) and evaluate its impact on cancer recurrence and survival.
  • A total of 251 patients were analyzed, revealing that 6% experienced AL, with factors like anemia and hospital complications significantly differing between those with and without AL.
  • Despite these associations, AL did not significantly affect 30- or 90-day mortality rates, cancer recurrence, or overall survival, indicating that while AL is influenced by certain factors, it does not worsen long-term outcomes.

Background: Acute volvulus of the gastric conduit is a rare complication after esophagectomy that warrants surgical intervention and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of the study is to evaluate whether fixation of the gastric conduit would reduce the incidence of postoperative volvulus following esophagectomy.

Methods: This single-center retrospective analysis of patients who underwent esophagectomy was conducted to determine the incidence of acute postoperative volvulus following a change in practice.

Purpose The aim of this study was to compare 30-day adverse events following pancreaticoduodenectomy between our safety-net hospital and the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS-NSQIP) in a matched cohort of Black/African American (AA) patients. Methods We retrospectively reviewed consecutive Black/AA patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomies from 2015 to 2020 at our safety-net institution. The corresponding patients from the ACS-NSQIP (2015-2019) were queried.

Diverticulum of the appendix is uncommon cause of right iliac fossa pain and inflammation with delayed diagnosis and high risk of complications, as it mimics acute appendicitis. Here we present a case of an elderly male patient who had lung cancer post-treatment. During the follow-up, appendicle lesion was discovered and suspected to be mucinous appendix.

Surgery is the gold standard treatment for patients with thyroid cancer or nodules suspicious for cancer. Open conventional approach is the standard surgical approach. However, a visible neck incision could be a concern for most young female patients, especially for patients with a history of healing with keloid or hypertrophic scars.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to review the collective experience and utility of FDG-PET scans (FDG-PET) in the detection of systemic metastases in patients with stage III melanoma.

Methods: A systematic search for relevant studies published between 1990 and 2012 was performed. We included English language studies that evaluated melanoma patients with stage III disease, with at least 10 patients per study, and collected statistical data to assess FDG-PET utility in the detection of distant metastases.

Background: Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) sampling of the thyroid represents a standard diagnostic procedure in the evaluation of thyroid nodules. The specimen can be acquired using either of two different techniques. In the first, the short axis is used with observation only of the tip of the needle whilst in the nodule.

Background: Our objective was to evaluate whether lithium-induced hyperparathyroidism (LIHPT) is caused by single-gland versus multigland disease.

Methods: Medical records of 7 patients who underwent parathyroidectomy for LIHPT were reviewed.

Results: The mean preoperative calcium was 11.

Background: Black thyroid is a rare condition. It has been considered to be pathognomonic of chronic minocycline ingestion for more than 30 years, although it can also occur in patients with hemochromatosis, ochronosis, mucoviscidosis, and hemorrhage. A possible association of black thyroid with thyroid cancer has been considered, but no direct causal relationship has been established.

Objective: The paper presents a case of plasmacytoma unexpectedly found in a goiter. PATIENT MATERIAL AND METHODS: The patient presented with compressive symptoms, including dyspnea and dysphagia and had no documented prior history of multiple myeloma. Physical examination revealed thyromegaly with no specific nodule.

Objective. Black thyroid is a rare pigmented change seen almost exclusively in patients upon minocycline ingestion, and the process has previously been thought to be generally benign. There have been 61 reported cases of black thyroid.

Background: The relationship between extent of cervical lymphadenectomy along with the number of involved lymph nodes (LNs) removed and overall survival has not been well documented in patients with medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). This study investigates whether the overall number of LNs removed and the number of metastatic LNs are independent prognostic factors for overall survival.

Methods: Data from patients with MTC in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registry database were examined.

Article Synopsis
  • Minimally invasive parathyroidectomy is a common treatment for primary hyperparathyroidism, but it's not suitable for patients with multiglandular disease.
  • The study reviewed the medical records of 502 patients to see if preoperative intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) levels could predict multiglandular disease.
  • Findings showed that while iPTH levels didn't indicate multiglandular disease risk, higher iPTH levels correlated with a positive sestamibi scan, suggesting it may be a better predictor for imaging results rather than the disease itself.

Introduction: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is the procedure of choice in the nutritional management of patients requiring gastrostomies. However, PEG tubes are not always feasible. The aim of the present study was to determine the feasibility, complications, and adequacy of feeding support of a novel laparoscopic gastrostomy technique in adults where PEG tubes were neither feasible nor safe.

Familial hyperparathyroidism includes the diagnoses of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1, type 2A, and familial isolated primary hyperparathyroidism. Familial isolated primary hyperparathyroidism is a rare, distinct form of familial primary hyperparathyroidism, mainly due to four-gland hyperplasia or single-gland adenoma. We describe our success in treating a 24-year-old woman with familial isolated primary hyperparathyroidism with resection of double adenoma, using the guide of intraoperative parathyroid hormone (PTH) monitoring.

Endometriosis is characterized by the presence of histologically normal endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity. Endometriosis occurs most commonly within the pelvis. Extrapelvic endometriosis is less common, but can involve nearly every organ in the body.

Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome is defined as compression of the third part of the duodenum secondary to a narrowing of the angle between the SMA and aorta. It is an uncommon disease. We present a patient who suffered from bowel obstruction and eventually perforation of the duodenum and discuss associated imaging findings.
