Robotic bilateral nephrectomy for large polycystic kidney disease.

Objective: This study aims to describe our technique and review our experience with synchronous robotic bilateral nephrectomy for large kidneys in ADPKD with the da Vinci XI and da Vinci Single Port platforms (Intuitive Surgical, Sunnyvale, CA).

Materials And Methods: We performed a retrospective review of all robotic bilateral nephrectomy cases from January 2020 to present at a high-volume robotic single centre. Demographic data and perioperative details including preoperative CT scans, indication for nephrectomy and renal function were collected.

American chestnut (Castanea dentata) was once the most economically and ecologically important hardwood species in the eastern United States. In the first half of the 20th century, an exotic fungal pathogen-Cryphonectria parasitica-decimated the species, killing billions of chestnut trees. Two approaches to developing blight-resistant American chestnut populations show promise, but both will require introduction of adaptive genomic diversity from wild germplasm to produce diverse, locally adapted restoration populations.

The psychological and physiological interaction between anorexia and the pregnant state has a large intrapartum and postpartum impact on mother and baby. Current research has attempted to discern the short and long term effects of eating disorders (EDs) on pregnancy as well as mother and baby-related sequelae; however little is understood about which management strategies are likely to prove most successful in mitigating these risks. The incidence and effect of low pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) on obstetric outcomes, and possible health complications in the future child, has attracted widespread attention.

A Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder review: the prevalence of underreporting and the role of stigma in the Military.

Exposure to traumatic events has been a part of human existence since the beginning of time; however modern lifestyles and developments mean that the majority of the population are spared the affliction of extreme trauma. The military, however, are one subgroup of individuals who are actively and repeatedly exposed to terrifying events on a regular basis, putting them at risk of developing "Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder" (PTSD). Despite this, the prevalence of PTSD reports in the UK military remains lower than its international allies, suggesting this value may be an underestimation of the true prevalence.

The aesthetic outcome of surgical correction for sagittal synostosis can be reliably scored by a novel method of preoperative and postoperative visual assessment.

Background: Aims of surgical correction for isolated sagittal synostosis are functional and aesthetic. Multiple surgical techniques exist; however, reliable assessment of aesthetic outcome is poorly documented, limiting direct comparisons. The pinched appearance of the temporal regions is particularly challenging to correct.

Mindfulness training for smoking cessation: results from a randomized controlled trial.

Background: Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the world, and long-term abstinence rates remain modest. Mindfulness training (MT) has begun to show benefits in a number of psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety and more recently, in addictions. However, MT has not been evaluated for smoking cessation through randomized clinical trials.
