Aim: The present study assessed low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels in school-aged children from the Ogasa District of Shizuoka Prefecture and evaluated the utility of non-invasive vascular tests, namely flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and intima-media thickness (IMT), in pediatric patients with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH).

Method: We analyzed the lipid test results of 8,568 students screened for prevention of lifestyle-related diseases and 78 children under 15 years old with cholesterol levels exceeding 220 mg/dL who visited Chutoen General Medical Center. Introduction: Acquired hepatocerebral degeneration (AHD) is a neurological condition associated with cerebral manganese (Mn) accumulation caused by portosystemic shunts (PSS), usually because of advanced liver disease. AHD is diagnosed by the identification of T1-weighted brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) hyperintensities coupled with the presence of PSS and neurological symptoms. To understand the generation process of airborne droplets during exhalation, this study investigates the mechanism of bimodal characteristics of the size distribution of droplets generated in a condensed spray flow. The phase change process in the condensed spray flow was estimated based on the droplet size distribution measured by a phase Doppler particle analyzer and the temperature distribution measured by a thermistor. On the central axis, the size distribution was unimodal in the spray interior.

Usefulness of virtual reassembly of the skull and spine in cases of fragmentation due to high-energy trauma: A feasibility study.

With the widespread use of postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) beside forensic autopsies for investigation of causes of death, three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction and fusion imaging using PMCT data are now becoming common. In the present study, the applicability of virtual reassembly from PMCT data was investigated in three cases involving fragmentation of the skull or spine due to high-energy trauma, as in such cases it is sometimes difficult to obtain detailed information on fractures using macroscopic observation alone. In the first case, virtual reassembly of the skull provided more information about the fractures than conventional reconstruction with adhesive.

Acute subdural hematoma caused by rupture of a mycotic aneurysm due to meningitis associated with infectious endocarditis: comparison of autopsy findings with postmortem computed tomography.

Forensic pathologists often encounter cases of acute subdural hematoma (SDH) due to trauma, whereas those attributable to endogenous causes are rare. Here, we report a case of the latter type in a 42-year-old man who was found dead at home after several months of fever and malaise. Postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) and autopsy were undertaken to clarify the cause of death.

Feasibility and efficacy of an activity-monitoring approach using pedometer in patients undergoing subacute rehabilitation: A pilot study.

Wearable devices for the quantification of walking have recently been adopted for gait rehabilitation. To apply this method in subacute rehabilitation settings, this approach must be effective in these populations and implemented as a feasible method in terms of adherence and safety, especially the risk of falling. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility and efficacy of an activity monitoring approach in subacute rehabilitation using a commercially available pedometer validated with slow walking.

A- and B-antigens are present on red blood cells (RBCs) as well as other cells and secretions in Hominoidea including humans and apes such as chimpanzees and gibbons, whereas expression of these antigens on RBCs is subtle in monkeys such as Japanese macaques. Previous studies have indicated that H-antigen expression has not completely developed on RBCs in monkeys. Such antigen expression requires the presence of H-antigen and A- or B-transferase expression in cells of erythroid lineage, although whether or not ABO gene regulation is associated with the difference of A- or B-antigen expression between Hominoidea and monkeys has not been examined.

The purpose of this study was to investigate Karnofsky performance status (KPS) scores and visual analogue scale (VAS) scores to explain which domains in the standardized self-reported quality of life (QOL) are instrumental for long-term hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) survivors. We conducted a nationwide cross-sectional questionnaire study on 221 survivors with allogeneic-HSCT in 28 pediatric centers. Patient-reported QOL was assessed at a single time point using the 36-item Short-Form Survey (SF-36), the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Bone Marrow Transplant (FACT-BMT), and VAS scores.

The reappearance of de Winter's pattern caused by acute stent thrombosis: A case report.

A 78-year-old man suffering from epigastric discomfort presented with an initial electrocardiogram showing complete right bundle branch block (RBBB) and ST-segment depression continuing to positive symmetrical T waves in leads V2 to V4, suggestive of de Winter's pattern. Emergent coronary angiography demonstrated 2-vessel disease with 90% stenosis in the proximal segment of the left anterior descending artery (LAD) with Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) grade 3 flow, and 75% in the mid portion and 90% in the distal portion of the right coronary artery, without collateral flow to LAD. A drug-eluting stent was deployed at the proximal LAD, and the flow of the diagonal branch deteriorated to TIMI grade 1 flow on the final angiogram.
