Purpose: To describe warning signs, monitoring tools, and training- and non-training-related actions taken by world-class endurance coaches in cases of underperformance.

Methods: Twelve highly acclaimed male Norwegian coaches known for coaching world-class endurance athletes with a remarkable collection of over 350 Olympic, World, and European Championship medals-primarily with Norwegian athletes-participated in the study. Data collection and analyses followed a 3-step pragmatic qualitative study design, including an initial questionnaire, in-depth interviews, and structured negotiation between researchers and coaches.

Article Synopsis
  • Rape can cause a lot of trauma and can lead to something called PTSD. A study looked at a type of therapy called modified prolonged exposure (mPE) to help women after a sexual assault and prevent PTSD.
  • The study involved three centers in Norway, where women received help within 72 hours after the assault, and some participated in the new therapy while others received standard treatment.
  • Out of 235 women who visited the centers, 22 took part in the study, and results showed that most participants finished their therapy and the new mPE treatment was delivered successfully.

Purpose: To investigate the training and development process of a multiple-Grand-Slam finalist.

Methods: A mixed-methods case-study design was used to capture the quantitative and qualitative aspects related to the training and successful development process. We used a 3-step data-collection process and pragmatic analyses of (1) training history based on logs, plans, and questionnaires; (2) in-depth semistructured interviews with the player's head coach/father, physical coach, and team administrator/mother; and (3) systematic quality assurance through negotiation among researchers and all key informants, including the player.

Purpose: To compare designs of training sessions applied by world-class cross-country skiers during their most successful junior and senior season.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of self-reported training characteristics (ie, training form, intensity, and exercise mode) among 8 male and 7 female world-class cross-country skiers was conducted.

Results: Total number of sessions (441 [71] vs 519 [34], P < .

While left-handers have been overrepresented among 7-meter shooters in handball, previous investigators have not found success from the 7-meter line to be related to handedness. Drawing on previous handedness research in sport, we performed two studies to examine possible negative frequency-dependent advantages to left-handedness during 7-meter throws among elite players. In Study I, we analyzed the records of 974 7-meter shooters from Danish and Norwegian elite divisions (485 males and 489 females) and found that left-handed males were overrepresented compared to the prevalence of left-handers in these two leagues, but left-handed females were not.

Objective: To describe the use of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) in conjunction with intraoperative localization techniques for removal of challenging upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) foreign bodies.

Methods: Three cases were taken to the operating room for removal of UADT foreign bodies. Two of these cases had previously undergone failed surgery(s).

Background: Our scientific understanding of the mechanistic and practical connections between training session prescriptions, their execution by athletes, and adaptations over time in elite endurance sports remains limited. These connections are fundamental to the art and science of coaching.

Objective: By using successful Norwegian endurance coaches as key informants, the aim of this study is to describe and compare best practice session models across different exercise intensities in Olympic endurance sports.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effect of the MC and endogenous sex hormone concentrations on performance-determining variables in three distinct MC phases in endurance-trained females.

Methods: Twenty-one eumenorrheic trained/highly trained endurance athletes completed a standardized test battery during the early follicular phase (EFP), ovulatory phase (OP), and midluteal phase (MLP) for either one ( n = 7) or two test cycles ( n = 14). MC phases were determined using calendar-based counting, urinary ovulation testing, and verified with serum hormone analysis.

Combining anaerobic digestion (AD) and microbial electrochemical technologies (MET) in AD-MET holds great potential. Methanogens have been identified as one cause of decreased electrochemical activity and deterioration of Geobacter spp. biofilm anodes.

Background: Anadromy comprises a successful life-cycle adaptation for salmonids, with marine migration providing improved feeding opportunities and thus improved growth. These rewards are balanced against costs from increased energy expenditure and mortality risk. Anthropogenic-induced environmental changes that reduce benefits and/or increase costs of migration e.

This study investigated whether dietary supplement acceptance mediated the relationship between supplement use and doping attitudes in youth sports. To this end, we employed a two-wave half-longitudinal design during a sports season (time point one [T1] to time point two [T2]). The sample consisted of 217 elite youth athletes (47% male; mean age = 16.

The aim of this study was to describe the authors' experience in head and neck reconstruction with the tensor fascia lata perforator flap (TFLPF). Between April 2009 and August 2020, 16 patients underwent head and neck reconstruction with a TFLPF. The flaps were designed in a vertical or transverse fashion based on perforators traveling along the medial or lateral aspect of the posterior edge of the tensor fascia lata muscle.

Mass development of macrophytes is an increasing problem worldwide and they are frequently removed where they are in conflict with local waterway users. Yet, macrophytes can provide important refuge and nursery habitats for fish. Little is known about the consequences of macrophyte removal for fish behavioural space use and habitat selection.

To compare training characteristics and aerobic power (VO) between the most successful junior and senior seasons of world-class cross-country (XC) skiers and to identify differences between sexes and among sprint and distance skiers. Retrospective analysis was conducted on self-reported training and VO tests of ten male and seven female world-class XC-skiers, collectively holding 38 Olympic medals. Training was categorized by form (endurance, strength, speed, other) and mode (specific, unspecific) and was divided into low- (LIT), moderate- (MIT), and high-intensity training (HIT).

Article Synopsis
  • Outer hair cells (OHCs) in the organ of Corti are crucial for converting mechanical sound signals into electrical responses and interact with inner hair cells (IHCs) through supportive cells, enhancing cochlear sensitivity and frequency selectivity.
  • Researchers used a light-sensitive protein, halorhodopsin (HOP), to selectively activate supporting cells (Deiters' and outer pillar cells) in mice, observing changes in cochlear mechanics and IHC activity through measured electrical potentials.
  • The study found that activating HOP in these supporting cells suppressed cochlear amplification and altered responses to sound, suggesting that targeting these cells could be a promising approach for treating noise-induced hearing loss.

Background: Active travel and school settings are considered ideal for promoting physical activity. However, previous research suggests limited effect of school-based interventions on overall physical activity levels among adolescents. The relationship between physical activity in different domains remains inconclusive.

Article Synopsis
  • This study tracked the performance and pacing trends of Olympic 1500-m race winners from 1924 to 2020, highlighting a significant improvement in finishing times by about 25 seconds over the period.
  • Most of the time improvements occurred in the early years (first 10 finals) with only two world records set and one athlete winning the event twice.
  • The pacing strategy shifted from a fast start, slow middle, and fast finish to a steadier acceleration throughout the race, with winners generally maintaining a tactical approach of staying near the front without leading until the later stages.

Playing when injured is a risky yet common business among ice hockey players. Conceptualized within the framework of the theory of planned behaviour, the current cross-sectional study aimed to test a multiple-mediator model linking players' perceived social pressure to their intention to play when injured. We tested whether social pressure is directly and indirectly (via attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control avoidance, and situational temptation) related to intention to play when injured.
