Hexagonal SiGe-2H has been recently shown to have a direct bandgap, and holds the promise to be compatible with silicon technology. Hexagonal Si and Ge have been grown on an epitaxial lattice matched template consisting of wurtzite GaP and GaAs, respectively. Here, we present the growth of hexagonal Si and SiGe nanowire branches grown from a wurtzite stem by the vapor-liquid-solid growth mode, which is substantiated bytransmission electron microscopy.

Formation of Ge-rich prismatic inclusions in the hexagonal SiGe shell of GaP-Si-SiGe nanowires is reported and discussed in relation to a growth model that explains their origin. An accurate TEM/EDX analysis shows that such prisms develop right on top of any {112[combining macron]0} facet present on the inner GaP-Si surface, with the base matching the whole facet extension, as large as tens of nanometers, and extending within the SiGe shell up to a thickness of comparable size. An enrichment in Ge by around 5% is recognized within such regions.

Recent advances in the synthetic growth of nanowires have given access to crystal phases that in bulk are only observed under extreme pressure conditions. Here, we use first-principles methods based on density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory to show that a suitable mixing of hexagonal Si and hexagonal Ge yields a direct bandgap with an optically permitted transition. Comparison of the calculated radiative lifetimes with typical values of nonradiative recombination mechanisms indicates that optical emission will be the dominant recombination mechanism.

Group IV materials with the hexagonal diamond crystal structure have been predicted to exhibit promising optical and electronic properties. In particular, hexagonal silicon-germanium (SiGe) should be characterized by a tunable direct band gap with implications ranging from Si-based light-emitting diodes to lasers and quantum dots for single photon emitters. Here we demonstrate the feasibility of high-quality defect-free and wafer-scale hexagonal SiGe growth with precise control of the alloy composition and layer thickness.

Purpose: The most commonly used technology currently used for autoradiography is storage phosphor screens, which has many benefits such as a large field of view but lacks particle-counting detection of the time and energy of each detected radionuclide decay. In this project, we examined the effect of a 4-month intervention with horses on perceived social support, self-esteem and general self-efficacy among Norwegian adolescents aged 12-15 years. The intervention took place at farm-based stables and included work with the horses and riding. A waiting-list crossover design was used and the participants answered questionnaires at three time periods.

Aims: To contribute to development of global frameworks for health promotion education, by means of constructive criticism of the Galway Consensus Conference Statement (GCCS), and, furthermore, to substantiate that such frameworks must transcend political trends if they are to contribute to the ongoing development of health promotion both as a discipline and as a professional practice. Methods: The GCCS's delimitations of health, health promotion, and health promotion ethics is analysed and contrasted with the authors' ongoing experiences from a master's programme in health promotion.

We have previously characterized the centrosome/spindle pole-associated protein (CSPP) involved in cell cycle progression. The open reading frame C20orf55 was identified in a yeast two-hybrid screen in a search for CSPP-interacting proteins. A homology search revealed that C20orf55 belongs to a gene family consisting of three members that have not yet been described.

Here we describe the identification of a novel vertebrate-specific centrosome/spindle pole-associated protein (CSPP) involved in cell-cycle regulation. The protein is predicted to have a tripartite domain structure, where the N- and C-terminal domains are linked through a coiled-coil mid-domain. Experimental analysis of the identified domains revealed that spindle association is dependent on the N-terminal and the coiled-coil mid domain.

A not yet described gene was identified in a lymphoma specific subtraction strategy. Three splice variants of this gene denoted immunoglobulin-like domain containing receptor 1 (ILDR1) were identified and characterized. Cellular localization studies showed membrane-association for two of the variants, while the third was cytoplasmic and appeared to translocate to the membrane upon co-expression with any of the other two isoforms.

The three-dimensional structures in dodecylphosphocholine (DPC) micelles and in trifluoroethanol (TFE) of the pediocin-like antimicrobial peptide sakacin P and an engineered variant of sakacin P (termed sakP[N24C+44C]) have been determined by use of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. SakP[N24C+44C] has an inserted non-native activity- and structure-stabilizing C-terminal disulfide bridge that ties the C-terminus to the middle part of the peptide. In the presence of DPC, the cationic N-terminal region (residues 1-17) of both peptides has an S-shaped conformation that is reminiscent of a three-stranded antiparallel beta-sheet and that is more pronounced when the peptide was dissolved in TFE instead of DPC.

This report describes the identification and characterization of a novel cytoplasmic isoform of human protein tyrosine phosphatase epsilon (PTPepsilon). The novel isoform, denoted cyt-PTPepsilonPD1, displays only the N-terminal catalytic, active phosphatase domain 1 (PD1) which is common in all known PTPepsilon isoforms. In addition, it contains a unique 132-residue long C-terminal end with no known motifs or homology to other characterized proteins.

The expression of protein tyrosine phosphatase epsilon (PTPepsilon) was studied in human tissues and blood cells. High mRNA expression was observed in peripheral blood leucocytes, particularly in monocytes and granulocytes which revealed at least four distinct transcripts. In lymphocytes, PTPepsilon expression was induced after 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) or antigen-receptor stimulation, indicating that PTPepsilon plays a role in the events taking place after antigen engagement.

A rapid and simple two-step procedure suitable for both small- and large-scale purification of pediocin-like bacteriocins and other cationic peptides has been developed. In the first step, the bacterial culture was applied directly on a cation-exchange column (1-ml cation exchanger per 100-ml cell culture). Bacteria and anionic compounds passed through the column, and cationic bacteriocins were subsequently eluted with 1 M NaCl.
