Chicken meat with reduced concentration of arachidonic acid (AA) and reduced ratio between omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids has potential health benefits because a reduction in AA intake dampens prostanoid signaling, and the proportion between omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids is too high in our diet. Analyses for fatty acid determination are expensive, and finding the optimal number of analyses to give reliable results is a challenge. The objective of the present study was i) to analyse the intraclass correlation of different fatty acids in five meat samples, of one gram each, within the same chicken thigh, and ii) to study individual variations in the concentrations of a range of fatty acids and the ratio between omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acid concentrations among fifteen chickens.

[Hepatic metastases in CUP (cancer of unknown primary) and painful amaurosis].

A 63-year-old woman presented with a 9-month history of painful amaurosis of the left eye caused by hemophthalmos. She was already undergoing chemotherapy for histopathologically proven liver metastases caused by an assumed melanoma. The location of the primary tumor was unknown.

Regional lymph node involvement in T1 papillary thyroid carcinoma: a bicentric prospective SPECT/CT study.

Purpose: Hybrid imaging combining single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with (131)I and X-ray computed tomography (CT) performed at radioablation (RA) for thyroid carcinoma more accurately detects regional lymph node metastases (LNM) than does planar imaging. In this bicentric prospective study we used hybrid imaging in conjunction with histopathological examination to measure LNM frequency in a consecutive group of patients referred for RA due to stage T1 papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC).

Methods: At the Departments of Nuclear Medicine of the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and the Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg SPECT/spiral CT is routinely performed in all PTC subjects at the time of RA.

[Quantification of immunohistochemical expression of somatostatin receptors in neuroendocrine tumors using 68Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT].

Purpose: The immunohistochemical expression of somatostatin receptor (SSTR) subtype 2 was compared to quantitative (68)Ga-DOTATATE PET in neuroendocrine tumors (NET).

Material And Methods: In 27 patients suffering from metastatic NET the expression of somatostatin receptors (SSTR, score 0-3) and the Ki-67 index were assessed. The immunohistochemical findings were compared with the (68)Ga-DOTATATE PET uptake in these tumors using the SUV(max) (standardized uptake value).

Detection of low-grade prosthetic joint infections using 99mTc-antigranulocyte SPECT/CT: initial clinical results.

Purpose: Low-grade joint infections are characterized by infiltration of granulocytes, which mediate aspects of inflammatory changes. We evaluated retrospectively the contribution of SPECT/CT as an addition to planar scintigraphy with (99m)Tc-labelled antigranulocyte antibodies for diagnosing and localizing low-grade joint infections.

Methods: Planar scintigraphy using (99m)Tc-labelled antigranulocyte BW 250/183 antibodies was performed in 31 patients with suspected joint infections at 5 min, 5 h and 24 h after injection, with additional SPECT/CT performed 6 h after injection.

[Whole-body MRI and FDG-PET/CT imaging diagnostics in oncology].

The advent of whole-body MRI (WB-MRI) has introduced a systemic approach to oncologic imaging compared to established sequential, multi-modal diagnostic algorithms. Hardware innovations, such as whole-body scanners at 1.5 Tesla and also recently 3 Tesla, combined with acquisition acceleration techniques, have made WB-MRI clinically feasible.

Recurrent polymorphonuclear pleocytosis with increased red blood cells caused by varicella zoster virus infection of the central nervous system: Case report and review of the literature.

We describe an immunocompetent 45-year-old woman who had four episodes of neurological disease (meningoencephalitis, multifocal vasculopathy, myelitis and inflammatory brain stem disease) produced by varicella zoster virus (VZV) over an 11-month period, all in the absence of rash. The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) contained anti-VZV IgG antibody, but not VZV DNA throughout her illness, reaffirming the superiority of detection of anti-VZV IgG in CSF compared to VZV DNA in diagnosing VZV infection of the nervous system. Moreover, 3 of 7 CSF samples examined during the 11 months showed a VZV-induced pleocytosis consisting predominantly of polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs), and 4 of 7 samples also contained increased numbers of red blood cells (RBCs).

Prehospital ultrasound in emergency medicine: incidence, feasibility, indications and diagnoses.

Background: Sonography is an established diagnostic procedure in hospitals, but is not routinely used in prehospital emergency medicine. Several studies have addressed the use of ultrasound during helicopter flights and in emergency rooms, few in prehospital settings, but most focused on abdominal blunt trauma. Several case reports describe crucial decisions distinguished by ultrasound.

In vivo imaging of macrophage activity in the coronary arteries using 68Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT: correlation with coronary calcium burden and risk factors.

Unlabelled: We measured the uptake of the somatostatin receptor ligand (68)Ga-[1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-N,N',N'',N'''-tetraacetic acid]-D-Phe(1),Tyr(3)-octreotate (DOTATATE) in the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) in association with calcified plaques (CPs) and cardiovascular risk factors.

Methods: Seventy consecutive tumor patients were examined by whole-body (68)Ga-DOTATATE contrast-enhanced PET/CT. Blood-pool-corrected standardized uptake value (target-to-background ratio) was measured in the LAD, and CT images were used to detect CP.

Intra-hepatic splenosis as an unexpected cause of a focal liver lesion in a patient with hepatitis C and liver cirrhosis: a case report.

Introduction: Splenosis is the heterotopic autotransplantation of splenic tissue, mostly found after splenic trauma or surgery in the abdominal, pelvic or thoracic cavity. Here we report a patient with a history of splenectomy after polytrauma with chronic hepatitis C and liver cirrhosis presenting with an hepatic mass of unknown origin.

Case Presentation: The lesion could not be exactly classified by ultrasound, computed tomography, angiography and biopsy, classical features of malignancy were not fulfilled, and on the other hand a neoplastic process could neither be excluded.

Appendicular fracture repair in dogs using the locking compression plate system: 47 cases.

The locking compression plate (LCP) has combination screw holes, making it possible to use the implant in three different ways; as a pure internal fixator using locking head screws, as a conventional compression plate using compression screws, or as a hybrid of the two. The experience with the LCP system in veterinary fracture repair is limited. The objective of this study was to evaluate the outcome of appendicular fractures in dogs, which were repaired with the LCP system combined with less invasive surgical techniques.

Unusual energy shifts in resonant photoemission spectra of organic model molecules.

We study the electronic structure of zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) and 1,4-octa-decyl substituted zinc phthalocyanine [(Dec)(8)PcZn] thin films (approximately 6-15 nm) using resonant photoemission spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at room temperature and at liquid He temperature. From XAS we conclude that the probability amplitude of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital is located predominantly at the inner C and N atoms of the molecules. Nonlinear energy shifts in resonant photoemission were observed; large shifts are explained by reduced electrical conductivity of inhomogeneously oriented molecules.

Whole-body MRI at 1.5 T and 3 T compared with FDG-PET-CT for the detection of tumour recurrence in patients with colorectal cancer.

The purpose of this study was to assess the diagnostic accuracy of whole-body MRI (WB-MRI) at 1.5 T or 3 T compared with FDG-PET-CT in the follow-up of patients suffering from colorectal cancer. In a retrospective study, 24 patients with a history of colorectal cancer and suspected tumour recurrence underwent FDG-PET-CT and WB-MRI with the use of parallel imaging (PAT) for follow-up.

Intraindividual comparison of 68Ga-DOTA-TATE and 18F-DOPA PET in patients with well-differentiated metastatic neuroendocrine tumours.

Aim: To compare the diagnostic impact of (68)Ga-DOTA-TATE and (18)F-DOPA PET in the diagnosis of well-differentiated metastatic neuroendocrine tumours (NET).

Methods: PET/CT using both (68)Ga-DOTA-TATE and (18)F-DOPA was performed in 25 patients with histologically proven metastatic NET (nine gut, five pancreas, six lung, one paranasal sinus, four with unknown primary). Analyses of PET examinations were patient-based (pathological uptake: yes/no), and based on tumour regions (primary tumour if present and metastases of liver, lung, bones and lymph nodes).

Characterization of the morphology and composition of commercial negative resists used for lithographic processes.

We present a spectroscopic and microscopic characterization of the chemical composition, structure, and morphology of two commercial negative resists using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). For this purpose, films of a novolak-based resist (ma-N 2400) and hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ) are treated under different conditions (temperature, deep ultraviolet (DUV) exposure, CHF(3) plasma). Topographic AFM images show that both heating and DUV exposure strongly affect the surface morphology of as-prepared ma-N 2400 resist films.

Exercise and epilepsy: a survey of Midwest epilepsy patients.

Obesity and lack of physical activity are an increasing problem. In addition to common barriers to physical activity, people with epilepsy also face fear of exercise-induced seizures, medication side effects, and, often, confusing advice regarding the safety of exercise. To explore barriers faced by people with epilepsy, we mailed a survey to 412 adult patients with epilepsy from an epilepsy center in Kansas.

A survey of the economic impact of subclinical Eimeria infections in broiler chickens in Norway.

The objective of this work was to examine the impact of subclinical coccidial infection on commercial performance, expressed as a modified European Production Index, in broilers. Performance data, and litter and faecal samples, were collected from two independent observational surveys of Norwegian broilers receiving in-feed narasin during 2000 to 2004. Numbers of oocysts per gram (OPG) of litter collected during rearing (Study 1) or faecal samples collected at slaughter (both studies), and relative frequencies of Eimeria species categories (both studies) were calculated.

Coccidial infections in commercial broilers: epidemiological aspects and comparison of Eimeria species identification by morphometric and polymerase chain reaction techniques.

The objective of this study was to add to existing knowledge of the epidemiology and the aetiology of coccidial infections in commercial broiler flocks. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and morphometric identification of the Eimeria species were compared as means of differentiation in the field samples of faeces and litter. For morphometry, the Eimeria species were categorized into three groups based on lengths of the oocysts.

Thin-film properties of DNA and RNA bases: a combined experimental and theoretical study.

The structures of the DNA and RNA bases cytosine, uracil, and thymine in thin films with a nominal film thickness of about 20 nm are studied by using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The molecules are evaporated in situ from powder on a gold foil. The experimental results indicate that cytosine is composed of two energetically close tautomeric forms, whereas uracil and thymine exist in only one tautomeric form.
