Injury to the Extrasellar Portion of the Internal Carotid Artery during Endoscopic Transsphenoidal Surgery: A Case Report.

Background: Injury to the internal carotid artery (ICA) during endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery (ETSS) is a serious complication with a risk of mortality. ICA injury during ETSS usually occurs during intrasellar manipulations and rarely occurs in the extrasellar portion. Several hemostatic procedures have been proposed for ICA injury in the intrasellar portion, whereas hemostatic methods for ICA injury in the extrasellar portion, where the ICA is surrounded by bone structures, are less well known.

[Diagnostic Accuracy of Transperineal MRI-Ultrasound Fusion Biopsy at the Introduction Period].

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) ultrasound fusion biopsy is becoming popular owing to the better detection rate of clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa). We retrospectively evaluated the accuracy of MRI-targeted biopsy during the period of introduction at a single academic center by comparing findings of its specimen and whole-mount histopathology. Between June 2018 and January 2021, 106 transperineal MRI-ultrasound fusion biopsies using BioJet software were performed.

Moyamoya disease: diagnosis and interventions.

Moyamoya disease is a rare cause of stroke, radiologically characterised by progressive stenosis of the terminal portion of the internal carotid arteries and compensatory capillary collaterals. The discovery that RNF213, which encodes an unconventional E3 ubiquitin ligase, is the major susceptibility gene for moyamoya disease in people from east Asia has opened new avenues for investigation into the mechanisms of disease and potential treatment targets. The Arg4810Lys variant of the gene is most strongly associated with moyamoya disease, but the penetrance is lower than 1%, suggesting a synergistic relationship with additional environmental and genetic risk factors.

Expression of matrix metalloproteinase-3 and -10 is up-regulated in the periodontal tissues of aged mice.

Objective: The present study was designed to investigate the whole transcriptome of periodontal tissues of both young and aged mice to identify the characteristic up-regulation of protease genes with aging and to localize their translated protein products in the periodontal tissues.

Background: The metzincin protease superfamily is composed of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), a disintegrin and metalloproteinases, and a disintegrin and metalloproteinases with thrombospondin motifs. Up-regulation of these extracellular matrix-degrading proteases has been implicated in senescence of tissues and organs, including the skin.

Increased risk of cancer mortality by smoking-induced aryl hydrocarbon receptor repressor DNA hypomethylation in Japanese population: A long-term cohort study.

Background: Smoking is well known to be a major risk factor for cancer, and to decrease the levels of aryl hydrocarbon receptor repressor (AHRR) DNA methylation. AHRR is a key regulator for AHR signaling, which is involved in chemical metabolism and cancer development. Therefore, smoking-induced AHRR DNA hypomethylation may be associated with cancer development.

Pharmacological intervention of cholesterol sulfate-mediated T cell exclusion promotes antitumor immunity.

Effective cancer immunotherapy requires physical contact of T cells with cancer cells. However, tumors often constitute special microenvironments that exclude T cells and resist immunotherapy. Cholesterol sulfate (CS) is a product of sulfotransferase SULT2B1b and acts as an endogenous inhibitor of DOCK2, a Rac activator essential for migration and activation of lymphocytes.

Virtual Rehabilitation of Elbow Flexion Following Nerve Transfer Reconstruction for Brachial Plexus Injuries Using the Single-Joint Hybrid Assisted Limb.

Purpose: The upper limb single-joint hybrid assistive limb (HAL), a wearable robot that can support elbow flexion and extension motions, was originally used to rehabilitate patients with stroke. We report the preliminary outcomes of serial HAL use for rehabilitation following nerve transfer (NT) for elbow flexion reconstruction in brachial plexus injuries.

Methods: Hybrid assistive limb training consisted of virtual and power training courses.

: Thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP) controls the cellular redox balance by binding to and inhibiting the expression and function of thioredoxin. DNA methylation of the gene is involved in the regulation of TXNIP mRNA expression. Changes in DNA methylation levels are associated with the development of various diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Psychometric Evaluation of the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Outcome Questionnaire for Brachial Plexus Injury Using Rasch Analysis.

Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire is the most widely used patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) for assessment of upper extremity disability assessment. However, DASH is a multidimensional measurement with different difficulty levels and ratio apportionment of the items categorised by ordinal scale. This has caused a misinterpretation of the total disability scores.

Robot-assisted partial nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma in the isthmus of horseshoe kidney.

The anatomic features of a horseshoe kidney are unique-the kidney is fixed and poorly mobile, with many arterial and venous blood supplies, thereby complicating minimally invasive surgery for renal cancer in this setting. Several reports have described robot-assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN) to treat renal cancer in a horseshoe kidney, but no reports of RAPN for renal cancer in the isthmus of a horseshoe kidney have been published to date. This case report describes the technique and usefulness of RAPN for treatment of renal cancer located in the isthmus of a horseshoe kidney.

Increased brain-derived neurotrophic factor in the serum of persons with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

The increasing prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a global health problem. In recent years, the inhibitory effect of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) on diabetes mellitus and fatty liver has been clarified. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between serum BDNF and NAFLD which caused by abnormal metabolism of glucose and lipids.

Staring death in the face: chimpanzees' attention towards conspecific skulls and the implications of a face module guiding their behaviour.

Chimpanzees exhibit a variety of behaviours surrounding their dead, although much less is known about how they respond towards conspecific skeletons. We tested chimpanzees' visual attention to images of conspecific and non-conspecific stimuli (cat/chimp/dog/rat), shown simultaneously in four corners of a screen in distinct orientations (frontal/diagonal/lateral) of either one of three types (faces/skulls/skull-shaped stones). Additionally, we compared their visual attention towards chimpanzee-only stimuli (faces/skulls/skull-shaped stones).

Comparative study on the real-time monitoring of a fluid bed drying process of extruded granules using near-infrared spectroscopy and audible acoustic emission.

The process of fluidized bed drying of granules was comparatively evaluated by on-line real-time measurements of granule moisture content (MC) using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) and audible acoustic emission (AAE). The extruded granules were prepared by kneading a powder blend containing lactose, starch, crystalline cellulose, and riboflavin, with water. The MC of the granules (while they were dried at 35 °C in a fluidized bed dryer) was monitored simultaneously with NIR and AAE.

Mechanochemical Effect on Controlled Drug Release of Konjac Glucomannan Matrix Tablets during Dry Grinding.

To design a controlled drug release preparation based on a safe natural material, a Konjac glucomannan (KGM) mixture containing 16.0 % calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)) was ground in a planetary ball mill for 0-120 min. The mechanochemical effect on the physicochemical properties of the KGM ground product was investigated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), powder X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and drug release testing.

Outcomes of proton therapy for non-small cell lung cancer in patients with interstitial pneumonia.

Background: Interstitial pneumonia (IP) is a disease with a poor prognosis. In addition, IP patients are more likely to develop lung cancer. Since IP patients frequently develop toxicities during cancer treatment, minimally invasive cancer treatment is warranted for such patients to maintain their quality of life.

Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a radiation therapy for cancer. In BNCT, the internalization of boron-10 atoms by cancer cells induces cell death through the generation of α particles and recoiling lithium-7 nuclei when irradiated with low-energy thermal neutrons. In this study, we aimed to construct exosomes [extracellular vesicles (EVs)]-based drug delivery technology in BNCT.

Facile synthesis of an ambient stable pyreno[4,5-]pyrrole monoanion and pyreno[4,5-:9,10-']dipyrrole dianion: from serendipity to design.

The stability of singly or multiply negatively charged π-conjugated organic compounds is greatly influenced by their electronic delocalization. Herein, we report a strategic methodology for isolation of a mysterious compound. The isolated compounds, a pyreno[4,5-]pyrrole monoanion and pyreno[4,5-:9,10-']dipyrrole dianion, were highly stable under ambient conditions due to high delocalization of the negative charge over multiple electron deficient C[triple bond, length as m-dash]N groups and pyrene π-scaffolds and allowed purification by column chromatography.

The Effects of Side-Chain Configurations of a Retro-Inverso-Type Inhibitor on the Human T-Cell Leukemia Virus (HTLV)-1 Protease.

In this study, the effects of side-chain configurations of D-Ile residues of a retro-inverso (RI)-type inhibitor on the human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) protease containing a hydroxyethylamine dipeptide isostere were clarified. Prior to evaluation using the RI-type inhibitor, the effects of side-chain configurations of Ile residues of the substrate peptide on the HTLV-1 protease were examined to estimate the influence of side-chain configurations on enzyme activity. Based on the estimation of the influence of side-chain configurations on protease affinity, the RI-type inhibitors containing a D-allo-Ile residue in the corresponding substrate sequence, instead of a D-Ile residue, were synthesized via 9-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl-based solid-phase peptide synthesis.

Diagnostic challenges of primary diffuse leptomeningeal melanomatosis in early adolescence: A case report.

Introduction: Primary diffuse leptomeningeal melanomatosis is an extremely rare variant of primary melanoma of the central nervous system. It is characterized by a variety of nonspecific clinical, radiological, and histopathological features requiring differential diagnosis from a variety of diseases. Here, we aimed to use our own clinical case as an example of the difficulties in the diagnosis of this disease.
