Stroke survivors face participation restrictions, yet little is known regarding how social support affects the association between an individual's abilities and participation. Through a Person-Environment-Occupation-Performance (PEOP) model lens, social support was examined as a potential mediator between ability and participation in cognitively and mobility-demanding activities for stroke survivors with aphasia (persons with aphasia [PWA]) and without aphasia (persons without aphasia [PWOA]). A cross-sectional design, including PWA ( = 50) and PWOA ( = 59) examined associations among person factors (physical impairment, cognition), an environmental factor (social support), and occupational participation through cognitively- and mobility-demanding activity subscales of the Activity Card Sort.

Methods: We conducted secondary analyses in 3 large representative panel studies of adults 50 years and older in the United States, Europe, and Israel: the English Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSA; analytic N = 14,992); the Survey of Health, Aging, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE; analytic N = 103,782); and the Health and Retirement Study (HRS; analytic N = 22,179). Within each sample, we used discontinuous growth curve modeling to estimate loneliness trajectories across adulthood and the impact of stroke on loneliness trajectories.

In the pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis (Atheriniformes, Atherinopsidae), exposure to high and low temperatures during the critical period of sex determination (CPSD) induce testicular and ovarian differentiation, respectively, regardless of the presence or not of the sex determining gene amhy, which is crucial for testis formation only at intermediate, sexually neutral temperatures. In this study we explored the existence of genotype-specific signaling of Crh (Corticotropin Releasing Hormone) family genes and their associated carrier protein, receptors, and other stress-related genes in response to temperature during the CPSD and the potential involvement of the central nervous system via the hypothalamus-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis in the sex determination of this species. The Crh family genes crhb, uts1, ucn3, the receptor crhr1 and the stress-related genes gr1, gr2, nr3c2 were transiently upregulated in the heads of pejerrey larvae during the CPSD by high temperature alone or in combination with other factors.

A new CN-type Lycopodium alkaloid consisting of two decahydroquinolines and a piperidine, cryptadine C (1) was isolated from Lycopodium cryptomerinum. The structure and relative configuration of 1, which is related to those of cryptadines A and B, lycoperine A, and hupercumine A, was elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data. Gamete production is a fundamental process for reproduction; however, exposure to stress, such as increased environmental temperature, can decrease or even interrupt this process, affecting fertility. Thus, the survival of spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) is crucial for the recovery of spermatogenesis upon stressful situations. The problem of super-resolution is concerned with the reconstruction of temporally/spatially localized events (or spikes) from samples of their convolution with a low-pass filter. Distinct from prior works which exploit sparsity in appropriate domains in order to solve the resulting ill-posed problem, this paper explores the role of binary priors in super-resolution, where the spike (or source) amplitudes are assumed to be binary-valued. Our study is inspired by the problem of neural spike deconvolution, but also applies to other applications such as symbol detection in hybrid millimeter wave communication systems.

A man in his 70s developed thyrotoxicosis due to painless thyroiditis after starting nivolumab, which was subsequently followed by severe hypothyroidism. We diagnosed him as chronic thyroiditis, initiated levothyroxine supplementation and treated appropriately. Retrospective CT images of the thyroid gland during the clinical course revealed that the CT attenuation value was high at first but gradually decreased.

It is undetermined which blood variables related to iron storage during the first trimester of pregnancy could efficiently predict anemia occurring during the third trimester. Red blood cell count (RBC), hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit, ferritin, iron, and total iron binding capacity (TIBC) were assessed longitudinally during the first, second, and third trimesters of 231 healthy Japanese women. None of the patients had anemia in the first trimester and none used iron supplementation before the second trimester blood test.
