Background: Complex deep surgical site infection in the cardiothoracic surgery patient that reaches the sternum and even the mediastinum, causing osteomyelitis and mediastinitis, is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) can aid in achieving favorable outcomes in patients with complex surgical site infections by promoting wound healing and shortening the hospital stay. NPWT is widely recognized for its advantages and has recently been used in both cardiothoracic and non-cardiothoracic settings.

Background: Empyema is a well-known disease that significantly increases the morbidity and mortality associated with pneumonia. There are a number of treatment modalities available but recently video assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) has been suggested as a reliable tool in management of empyema; particularly in early stages. The aim of this study is to assess the safety and effectiveness of using initial VATS for all surgically fit patients with early stages of empyema.

We innovated a modified bronchoscopic technique to extract tracheobronchial headscarf pins by the insertion of a magnet to allow an easy and non-traumatic extraction of the pins. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility and safety of our new technique and compare it with our large previous experience with the classic bronchoscopic method of extraction of tracheobronchial headscarf pins.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of hybrid fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) for surveillance and follow-up of thymoma patients to detect recurrent disease. A retrospective chart review was performed on 37 thymoma patients who underwent FDG-PET/CT-scans during postoperative follow-up. The following information was obtained: clinical indication for FDG-PET/CT, the results of the FDG-PET/CT, particularly with regard to the additional diagnostic imaging information, the localization of the disease and subsequent clinical patient management.

Video-assisted thoracoscopic exploration of the right hemithorax in a 37-year-old woman with recurrent catamenial pneumothorax revealed multiple diaphragmatic fenestrations. She underwent successful plication of the diaphragm, with no recurrence of pneumothorax after 4 years of follow-up.

Plasmapheresis (PMP) before thymectomy appears to improve the postoperative outcome. As PMP has its own complications, selective use of PMP preoperatively for patients at risk of post-thymectomy complications would improve the postoperative outcome, and decreases the PMP-related complications.

Methods: Twenty-five consecutive patients with thymic pathology underwent FDG-PET after being evaluated by computed tomography (CT). The indication for CT was myasthenia gravis in 10, anterior mediastinal mass in 7, and recurrent thymic tumor after surgical excision in 8 patients.
