Progress with the Second Dose Measles Vaccine Introduction and Coverage in the WHO African Region.

Introduction: To achieve global and regional measles elimination objectives, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends coverage of 95% or higher with two doses of measles-containing vaccine. A second dose of measles-containing vaccine (MCV) is typically administered in the second year of life after 12 months of age.

Methods: We reviewed WHO-UNICEF estimates of national coverage (WUENIC) for the first and second doses of MCV (MCV1 and MCV2, respectively) and calculated drop-out rates between MCV1 and MCV2 for countries in the WHO African Region.

Systematic review and meta-analyses: What has the application of Mendelian randomization told us about the causal effect of adiposity on health outcomes?

Mendelian randomization (MR) is increasingly used for generating estimates of the causal impact of exposures on outcomes. Evidence suggests a causal role of excess adipose tissue (adiposity) on many health outcomes. However, this body of work has not been systematically appraised.

Examining adaptive models of care implemented in hospital ICUs during the COVID-19 pandemic: a qualitative study.

Background: The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic led to an increased demand for hospital beds, which in turn led to unique changes to both the organisation and delivery of patient care, including the adoption of adaptive models of care. Our objective was to understand staff perspectives on adaptive models of care employed in intensive care units (ICUs) during the pandemic.

Methods: We interviewed 77 participants representing direct care staff (registered nurses) and members of the nursing management team (nurse managers, clinical educators and nurse practitioners) from 12 different ICUs.

All six World Health Organization regions have committed to eliminating measles; however, no region has achieved and sustained measles elimination. Progress Toward Measles Elimination - African Region, 2017-2021.

Worldwide, measles remains a major cause of disease and death; the highest incidence is in the World Health Organization African Region (AFR). In 2011, the 46 AFR member states established a goal of regional measles elimination by 2020; this report describes progress during 2017-2021. Regional coverage with a first dose of measles-containing vaccine (MCV) decreased from 70% in 2017 to 68% in 2021, and the number of countries with ≥95% coverage decreased from six (13%) to two (4%).

An influenza hemagglutinin stem nanoparticle vaccine induces cross-group 1 neutralizing antibodies in healthy adults.

Influenza vaccines could be improved by platforms inducing cross-reactive immunity. Immunodominance of the influenza hemagglutinin (HA) head in currently licensed vaccines impedes induction of cross-reactive neutralizing stem-directed antibodies. A vaccine without the variable HA head domain has the potential to focus the immune response on the conserved HA stem.

Application of Mendelian randomization to explore the causal role of the human gut microbiome in colorectal cancer.

The role of the human gut microbiome in colorectal cancer (CRC) is unclear as most studies on the topic are unable to discern correlation from causation. We apply two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) to estimate the causal relationship between the gut microbiome and CRC. We used summary-level data from independent genome-wide association studies to estimate the causal effect of 14 microbial traits (n = 3890 individuals) on overall CRC (55,168 cases, 65,160 controls) and site-specific CRC risk, conducting several sensitivity analyses to understand the nature of results.

The functionality and performance of public health programmes at all levels of government play a critical role in preventing, detecting, mitigating and responding to public health threats, including infectious disease outbreaks. Multiple and concurrent outbreaks in recent years, such as COVID-19, Ebola and Zika, have highlighted the importance of documenting lessons learnt from public health responses of national and global agencies. In February 2020, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Center for Global Health (CGH) activated the Measles Incident Management System (MIMS) to accelerate the ability to detect, mitigate and respond to measles outbreaks globally and advance progress towards regional measles elimination goals.

Assessment of Risk Factors, Prehospital Measures and Clinical Needs of Patients Admitted With Snake Envenomation at a Rural Hospital in Trinidad and Tobago.

Objective: This study assessed the risk factors for sustaining a snake bite, the prehospital measures employed, and the clinical needs of patients admitted with confirmed envenomation.

Methodology: Data was collected at a single center, a rural secondary care hospital in Trinidad and Tobago. A cross-sectional method was used that enrolled all consenting patients requiring admission following clinical confirmation of snake envenomation during the period 2017-2019.

Embedding Financial Services in Frequented, Trusted Settings: Building on Families' Pre-existing Economic Mobility Efforts.

Objective: The aim of this study was to understand parents'/guardians' experiences and aspirations around economic mobility and their impact on the acceptability and use of financial services embedded in frequented, trusted settings such as schools and pediatric clinics.

Method: We recruited 18 English-speaking guardians with at least 1 child enrolled in a school for low-income families and eligible for Internal Revenue Service-sponsored free tax preparation. Each participant completed a semistructured interview before tax filing; a subset completed follow-up interviews.

The EWAS Catalog: a database of epigenome-wide association studies.

Epigenome-wide association studies (EWAS) seek to quantify associations between traits/exposures and DNA methylation measured at thousands or millions of CpG sites across the genome. In recent years, the increase in availability of DNA methylation measures in population-based cohorts and case-control studies has resulted in a dramatic expansion of the number of EWAS being performed and published. To make this rich source of results more accessible, we have manually curated a database of CpG-trait associations (with p<1x10 ) from published EWAS, each assaying over 100,000 CpGs in at least 100 individuals.

We conducted a first-in-human, randomized, open-label, phase 1 clinical trial ( NCT03186781 ) to evaluate a novel ferritin (H2HA-Ferritin) nanoparticle influenza vaccine platform. The H2 subtype has not circulated in humans since 1968.

Rationalization of Orthopaedic Surgical Instrument Trays: Three Years' Experience of a Practical Approach to Cut Down Unnecessary Costs.

Background This study aimed to rationalize the surgical instrument trays (SITs) used in some trauma and orthopedic (T&O) procedures to reduce unnecessary costs. Methods SITs for several T&O procedures at our trust were assessed to judge the utility of each instrument. SITs for hip, knee, and shoulder arthroscopy, dynamic hip screw (DHS), rotator cuff repair, shoulder stabilization, total shoulder arthroplasty (TSR), and proximal humerus fracture fixation were reviewed.

In 2012, the World Health Assembly endorsed the Global Vaccine Action Plan,* with the objective of eliminating measles in five of the six World Health Organization (WHO) regions by 2020 (1). The Immunization Agenda 2021-2030 (IA2030) uses measles incidence as an indicator of the strength of immunization systems. Vaccination information, motivations, and barriers in the context of meningococcal serogroup A conjugate vaccine introduction: A qualitative assessment among caregivers in Burkina Faso, 2018.

Background: In March 2017, Burkina Faso introduced meningococcal serogroup A conjugate vaccine (MACV) into the Expanded Programme on Immunization. MACV is administered to children aged 15-18 months, concomitantly with the second dose of measles-containing vaccine (MCV2). One year after MACV introduction, we assessed the sources and content of immunization information available to caregivers and explored motivations and barriers that influence their decision to seek MACV for their children.
