Models of the underwater acoustic soundscape are important for evaluating the effects of human generated sounds on marine life. The performance of models can be validated against measurements or verified against each other for consistency. A verification workshop was held to compare models that predict the soundscape from wind and vessels and estimate detection ranges for a submerged target.

Objectives/hypothesis: To evaluate costs associated with perioperative gastrostomy tube (G-tube) placement for neonates with Robin sequence (PRS) that undergo mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO).

Methods: Retrospective chart review was performed to examine the medical records of neonates with RS who received treatment at our institution between 2012 and 2021. Patients under 6 months of age that underwent MDO for RS were included.

Objective: This study explored the association between workload and the level of burnout reported by clinicians in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). A qualitative analysis was used to identify specific factors that contributed to workload and modulated clinician workload in the NICU.

Study Design: We conducted a study utilizing postshift surveys to explore workload of 42 NICU advanced practice providers and physicians over a 6-month period.

Protected areas are typically managed as a network of sites exposed to varying anthropogenic conditions. Managing these networks benefits from monitoring of conditions across sites to help prioritize coordinated efforts. Monitoring marine vessel activity and related underwater radiated noise impacts across a network of protected areas, like the U.

Objective: To reduce unnecessary simultaneous karyotype analysis and chromosomal microarray (CMA) testing in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Study Design: This quality improvement study investigated the effect of collaborative efforts between the NICU, cytogenetics, and clinical genetics on numbers of genetic tests, rates of abnormal tests, and number of genetics consults comparing baseline and 5-month intervention periods.

Results: Simultaneous karyotype analyses and CMAs decreased due to a decrease in karyotype testing (11.

Objective: Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) is diagnosed prenatally in ~60% of cases. Prenatal measures typically guide management and prognostication. Simple postnatal prognosticators are needed when prenatal diagnosis is lacking.

Background: Improving the health and well-being of young people is a public health priority. Schools present an ideal setting to implement strategies to improve young people's health and well-being. A key strategy involves conducting surveys to assess student health needs, inform interventions, and monitor health over time.

Article Synopsis
  • - This research investigates different mechanical ventilation strategies for infants with severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) to improve care and clinical trial design.
  • - A secondary analysis of data from 78 infants across 14 centers used clustering techniques to categorize ventilator settings into three distinct approaches based on specific physiological measures.
  • - The findings show significant differences in ventilation settings among the identified clusters, suggesting a need for further studies to link these practices to BPD clinical outcomes.

Improvements in respiratory care have resulted in improved outcomes for preterm infants over the past three decades. To target the multifactorial nature of neonatal lung diseases, neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) should consider developing comprehensive respiratory quality improvement programs that address all drivers of neonatal respiratory disease. This article presents a potential framework for developing a quality improvement program to prevent bronchopulmonary dysplasia in the NICU.

Objective: The purpose of the study was to validate WORKLINE, a NICU specific clinician workload model and to evaluate the feasibility of integrating WORKLINE into our EHR.

Study Design: This was a prospective, observational study of the workload of 42 APPs and physicians in a large academic medical center NICU over a 6-month period. We used regression models with robust clustered standard errors to test associations of WORKLINE values with NASA Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) scores.

Schools offer a valuable setting to promote good health and mental well-being amongst young people. Schools are complex systems and therefore systems interventions are needed to improve pupil health and well-being. This paper presents a qualitative process evaluation of the South West- School Health Research Network, a systems level intervention.

Background: There is an increased need for prevention and early intervention surrounding young people's health and well-being. Schools offer a pivotal setting for this with evidence suggesting that focusing on health within schools improves educational attainment. One promising approach is the creation of School Health Research Networks which exist in Wales and Scotland, but are yet to be developed and evaluated in England.

(Background) Radiation failure for localized prostate cancer is seen in 20-60% of patients who do not undergo extirpative surgery. Though potentially curative, salvage prostatectomy (SS) has not been frequently performed historically due to high rates of complications and postoperative incontinence. With the advent of robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy, these rates appear to be improved.

Objectives: To report temporal trends in venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) use for neonatal respiratory failure in U.S. centers before and after functional venovenous cannula shortage due to withdrawal of one dual lumen venovenous cannula from the market in 2018.

The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of 5-weeks participation in The Daily Mile on cognitive function, physical fitness, and adiposity in primary school children. In a quasi-experimental study, one class from each school completed The Daily Mile (n = 44) or acted as a control group (n = 35). Baseline measures included cognitive function tests (Stroop test, Sternberg paradigm, Flanker task), physical fitness (multi-stage fitness test) and body composition (BMI percentile, waist:hip circumference, sum of skinfolds).

Primary cutaneous lymphomas are a rare group of diseases, with an estimated incidence of 0.5-1 case per 100,000 people per year. Primary cutaneous B-cell lymphomas (pCBCLs) represent 25-30% of all primary cutaneous lymphomas.

Background: For critically ill congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) patients on high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and/or inhaled nitric oxide (iNO), operative repair in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) has been proposed to avoid complications during transport to an operating room (OR). This study compared neonates with CDH who received herniorrhaphy in the NICU or OR, with a subgroup analysis considering only patients supported with ECMO.

Methods: Patients admitted to the NICU in the first 2 weeks of life at a free-standing children's hospital between July 2004 and September 2021 were examined.

Objective: To quantify initial tidal volume (VT) during neonatal volume-targeted ventilation (VTV) and to characterize the agreement of initial VT with the limited-evidence available.

Study Design: We performed a multi-center retrospective observational cohort study in two Neonatal Intensive Care Units evaluating 313 infants who received VTV as the initial ventilation modality prior to postnatal day 14. We generated descriptive statistics and performed multivariable logistic regression analysis to determine factors associated with initial VT use that agreed with available literature.

Background: The cross-sectional associations between physical activity, physical fitness and adiposity with risk factors for cardiometabolic disease (particularly novel ones such as inflammatory cytokines) and cognitive function across the period of adolescence are not well understood. Additionally, novel physical activity metrics that summarise activity volume and intensity in a continuous manner have not been investigated in this context. Therefore, this study investigated the cross-sectional associations between physical activity, physical fitness and adiposity with risk factors for cardiometabolic disease and cognitive function.

Objectives: Reports of medical student mentorship prevalence range between 26% and 77%. This broad range likely reflects the tendencies of studies to focus on specific populations of medical students. There is little consensus about the characteristics of mentoring relationships among medical students.

Background: Non-routine events (NRE) are defined as any suboptimal occurrences in a process being measured in the opinion of the reporter and comes from the field of human factors engineering. These typically occur well up-stream of an adverse event and NRE measurement has not been applied to the complex context of neonatal surgery. We sought to apply this novel safety event measurement methodology to neonates in the NICU undergoing gastrostomy tube placement.
