Lomentospora prolificans is a rare filamentous fungus that causes invasive fungal disease (IFD) in immunocompromised patients with hematological malignancies, as well as hematopoietic cell or solid organ transplant recipients. A 75-year-old woman was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, and started induction therapy with azacitidine and adjusted-dose venetoclax along with antifungal prophylaxis with fluconazole. On day 7, she became febrile and chest CT imaging showed multiple nodules in both lung fields, and the serum galactomannan antigen index became positive, indicating probable IFD.

The purpose of this paper is to establish an easy-to-use questionnaire for subjective evaluations of visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) and visual fatigue caused by stereoscopic 3D (s3D) images. We reviewed previously used questionnaires and extracted 51 important subjective evaluation items from them. We then recruited 251 participants to observe 3D images designed to easily induce sickness or visual fatigue, and we asked them to respond to the 51 items.

We analyzed the compression pressures in 2772 mammography images of 807 patients acquired by digital mammography equipment at four facilities. The analysis included the average compression pressure at all facilities, difference in compression pressure at each facility, differences between the pressures used by radiological technologists in the same facility, and difference attributed to the breast structure. We also analyzed the effects of the compression pressure on the breast thickness and mean glandular dose (MGD) at each facility.

A 74-year-old woman was diagnosed as having transverse colon cancer after diagnosis of nephrotic syndrome caused by membranous nephropathy. Although she had hypoproteinemia and hypoalbuminemia, we judged that she had no major nutritional problem. In previous, similar case reports, the use of human serum albumin and fresh-frozen plasma was suggested to be important to avoid complications in the perioperative period.

It is speculated that adjuvant use of bisphosphonate reduces recurrence in breast cancer patients through suppression of bone resorption. To determine the prognostic impact of bone resorption markers, we investigated serum levels of the pyridinoline crosslinked carboxyterminal telopeptide of type I collagen (1CTP) and N-terminal crosslinking telopeptides of type I collagen (NTX). 1CTP and NTX were measured at baseline (before operation or neoadjuvant therapies) and afterward in 469 patients operated on breast cancer.

Unlabelled: We examined the prognostic significance of progesterone receptor (PgR) expression in immunohistochemical-based luminal subtypes defined by Ki-67 expression, taking menopausal status into consideration. The study included 327 surgically removed estrogen receptor-positive and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative breast cancers. High Ki-67 expression (> 15%) and low PgR expression (£ 20%) were significant independent factors resulting in worse distant relapse-free survival.

Abnormalities of the hemostatic system in patients with DIC result from the sum of vectors for hypercoagulation and hyperfibrinolysis. DIC is classified into hyperfibrinolysis, hypercoagulation, massive bleeding or nonsymptomatic types according to the balance of the two vectors. Both the antithrombin (AT) and protein C (PC) levels are significantly low in patients with septic DIC, and reduced amounts of AT and PC result in the lack of inhibition of thrombin and activated FVIII, respectively.

Background: The impact of body mass index (BMI) on the risk of postmenopausal estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancers has been well documented. However, the mechanism for the impact of BMI on the etiology of luminal A and luminal B subtypes has not yet been identified.

Methods: We analyzed associations between BMI and breast cancers stratified by immunohistochemically defined intrinsic subtypes, and 1,297 Japanese women (615 breast cancer patients and 682 healthy women from a breast cancer screening program) were enrolled in a case-control study.

Three diagnostic criteria for disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) have been established by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, the International Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis (ISTH) and the Japanese Association for Acute Medicine. The diagnostic criteria involving global coagulation tests, such as the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare criteria and the ISTH overt diagnostic criteria, are first-generation DIC diagnostic criteria, those involving global coagulation tests and changes in these tests such as the Japanese Association for Acute Medicine criteria, are second-generation DIC diagnostic criteria, and those including non-overt DIC diagnostic criteria involving global coagulation tests, changes in these tests and hemostatic molecular markers will be the future (third-generation) DIC diagnostic criteria. There are no significant differences in the three diagnostic criteria with respect to predicting poor outcomes.

The generation of thrombin-antithromin (AT) complex (TAT) or soluble fibrin (SF) was prospectively compared with prothrombin fragment 1 + 2 (F1 + 2) generation in patients with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). The plasma levels of TAT, SF, and F1 + 2 were significantly higher in the DIC group than in the non-DIC group. The differences in these levels between the DIC group and non-DIC group were significantly related to infections and hematopoietic tumors.

Background: Estrogen receptor (ER)-positive and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative breast cancers can be divided into luminal A and luminal B subtypes based on Ki67 expression levels. However, the biological differences in ER and progesterone receptor (PR) expression levels between these luminal subtypes are not clear.

Methods: We examined immunohistochemical expression levels of ER, PR, and Ki67 in 180 ER-positive/HER2-negative breast cancers while taking menopausal status into account.

Fibrin-related markers (FRMs) such as fibrin and fibrinogen degradation products (FDPs), d-dimer, and soluble fibrin monomer complex (SFMC) were prospectively evaluated in 522 patients using the overt disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) diagnostic criteria. The differences in all FRMs between the DIC group and the non-DIC group, and those between the survivors and nonsurvivors were significant in the patients with infections. In an analysis of all patients, DIC score cutoff values of 2 and 3 points for FDP, d-dimer, and SFMC were recommended to be 8.

ADAMTS13, endothelial von Willebrand factor (VWF) and related proteins are involved in the pathogenesis of some life threatening systemic thrombotic coagulopathies. Changes of plasma ADAMTS13 activity in thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is well known but is also involved in septic disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Here we investigated the ADAMTS13 activity, VWF and VWF propeptide (VWFpp) antigens in 69 patients with DIC, 143 with non-DIC, 21 with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) and 23 with atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) for diagnosis of DIC.
