Nanostructuring surfaces is an emergent strategy to endow materials with abilities to combat pathogenic bacteria. Nevertheless, it remains challenging to create nanospike structures on the curved surfaces of polymer materials, including gauze and other microfibrous medical materials. Additionally, the effects of nanostructured surfaces on bacteria in the presence of proteins and in vivo remain largely unexplored.

Objectives: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration/biopsy (EUS-FNA/B) is the gold standard for diagnosing gastric subepithelial lesions (SELs), but diagnosing lesions smaller than 20 mm remains challenging. We developed traction-assisted EUS-FNB (TA-EUS-FNB) using the clip-with-thread method to enhance diagnostic accuracy by stabilizing the lesion and providing counter-traction for easier needle access. This study evaluates the effectiveness of TA-EUS-FNB in diagnosing small gastric SELs.

Colloidal cellulose nanoparticles, or nanocelluloses, are derived from natural cellulose sources in a top-down manner via physical and/or chemical treatments that extract naturally occurring cellulose nanostructures. Naturally derived nanocelluloses have been successfully commercialized in various fields, and their potential is still being widely explored in materials science. Moreover, recent advances in nanoarchitectonics of low-molecular-weight cellulose, or cello-oligosaccharides, have opened new avenues for developing "artificial nanocelluloses".

Article Synopsis
  • Left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC) is a hereditary heart condition marked by unusual heart muscle structure, and this study specifically focused on biventricular noncompaction (BiVNC) in children to understand its clinical characteristics and genetic factors.
  • The research involved 234 pediatric patients and revealed that BiVNC often leads to serious complications, including a higher incidence of congenital heart disease and reduced survival rates compared to other heart conditions.
  • Findings indicated that patients with BiVNC frequently exhibited left ventricular dysfunction and a notable percentage had genetic variants linked to mitochondrial and developmental issues, emphasizing the need for thorough genetic screening for better patient outcomes.

This study investigated the usefulness of histopathological examination in diagnosing ketoacidosis in hypothermia cases. Out of 79 cases (38 females), 30 showed basal vacuolization (BV), a representative histopathological finding of ketoacidosis, in their hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained specimens. Through the use of both lipid staining with osmium tetroxide postfixation and immunohistochemistry for adipophilin (ADFP-IHC), BV pattern pathology was identified in 43 cases.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers focused on identifying new serum extracellular vesicle (EV)-based biomarkers for detecting resistance to androgen receptor signaling inhibitors (ARSIs) in metastatic prostate cancer (PC) and castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC).
  • They used RNA-sequencing on serum EVs from CRPC patients before and after developing ARSI-resistance to analyze changes in gene expression, particularly looking at mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS)-related genes.
  • The study found that SDHB mRNA levels were significantly higher in EVs from ARSI-resistant CRPC patients, suggesting that EV-SDHB could serve as a novel biomarker for early diagnosis of ARSI-resistance.
