The discharge of untreated dye waste from various industrial sectors into wastewater poses significant environmental and health risks. This study presents an innovative approach by developing a cost-effective and eco-friendly hybrid mesoporous nanocomposite, silver nanoparticles@mesoporous mango peel-derived carbon (AgNPs@MMC), synthesized from agricultural waste (mango peels) and urban waste (X-ray film waste). The core objectives of this work are: (i) recycling agricultural and urban waste to produce valuable materials; (ii) achieving effective removal of methyl violet 10B (MV10B) through simultaneous adsorption and photocatalytic degradation; and (iii) evaluating the antimicrobial properties of the developed material.

Background: Pleural effusions constitute one of the most frequent pathologies encountered in the pulmonary service of Maputo Central Hospital (MCH) in Mozambique. Bleomycin and talc are commonly used for pleurodesis, but cost prohibitive, therefore we aimed to retrospectively compare the efficacy and safety of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) with bleomycin for pleurodesis.
Methods: Case records of pleurodesis using bleomycin and NaOH from 2002 to 2013 were reviewed.
Background: Tuberculosis is a major health concern in several countries, and effective diagnostic algorithms for use in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients are urgently needed.
Methods: At prescription of antiretroviral therapy, all patients in 3 Mozambican health centers were screened for tuberculosis, with a combined approach: World Health Organization (WHO) 4-symptom screening (fever, cough, night sweats, and weight loss), a rapid test detecting mycobacterial lipoarabinomannan in urine (Determine TB LAM), and a molecular assay performed on a sputum sample (Xpert MTB/RIF; repeated if first result was negative). Patients with positive LAM or Xpert MTB/RIF results were referred for tuberculosis treatment.
Aim: 16 thioxoquinazolines were evaluated in vivo for anti-inflammatory activity using carrageenan-induced paw edema assay.
Results: In particular, out of the targets (1-16), compounds 4 and 6 displayed the highest anti-inflammatory activity (≥80%) and furtherly tested against complete Freund's adjuvant-induced arthritic rats. Significant reduction in the serum level of IL-1β, COX-2 and prostaglandin E2 in the complete Freund's adjuvant rats is demonstrated by compounds 4 and 6.
Hispidin oligomers are styrylpyrone pigments isolated from the medicinal fungi Inonotus xeranticus and Phellinus linteus. They exhibit diverse biological activities and strong free radical scavenging activity. To rationalize the antioxidant activity of a series of four hispidin oligomers and determine the favored mechanism involved in free radical scavenging, DFT calculations were carried out at the B3P86/6-31+G (d, p) level of theory in gas and solvent.
