Group II C-type lectin domain (CTLD) containing receptors belong to a large family of pattern recognition receptors which mainly act on the innate immunity. They are structurally related and consist of a cytoplasmic immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibitory motif (ITIM) and a single extracellular CTLD. Although they have been described in teleost fish, their involvement in immune responses is not well understood.

Preference for complementary and alternative medicine among patients on long-term treatment in Jos university teaching hospital, Nigeria.

Background: The use of complementary and alternative medicines(CAM) is on the increase globally particularly among those with chronic medical conditions. Imperatively, the treatment outcomes of management of chronic illness is hinged on adherence to prescribed conventional treatment with little or no attention paid to the intent to use or concomitant use of alternative medicines in most treatment settings. Hence, this study assessed the preference for CAM and its predictors as among patients on long-term treatment in Jos University Teaching Hospital.

Background: The transcription factor NF-κB drives neoplastic progression of many cancers including primary brain tumors (glioblastoma [GBM]). Precise therapeutic modulation of NF-κB activity can suppress central oncogenic signaling pathways in GBM, but clinically applicable compounds to achieve this goal have remained elusive.

Methods: In a pharmacogenomics study with a panel of transgenic glioma cells, we observed that NF-κB can be converted into a tumor suppressor by the non-psychotropic cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD).

Inhibition of L-NAME-induced hypertension by combined treatment with apocynin and catalase: the role of Nox 4 expression.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as superoxide (O2-) generated by NAD(P)H oxidases have emerged as important molecules in blood pressure regulation. This study investigated the effect of apocynin and catalase on blood pressure and renal haemodynamic and excretory function in an L-NAME induced hypertension model. Although chemotherapeutic drugs have brought about more life expectancy, two major and severe complications during chemotherapy are chemoresistance and tumor relapse.

Palmar psoriasis or missed BCC?-A case report.

Case Report: A 76-year-old Caucasian woman with a history of previous BCCs excised from the head and legs was referred from the dermatology team with a biopsy proven superficial BCC to the left palm. The patient had presented to the dermatology team with the same lesion 7 years prior to the definitive diagnosis. The lesion was described as 27 × 15 mm scaly, poorly-defined, plaque-like lesion to the central palm.

Vitamin D3 and B12 supplementation in pregnancy.

Aim: To assess the efficacy of vitamin D3 or B12 supplementation during pregnancy.

Methods: Pregnant women at 6-14 weeks in the intervention arm received oral high dose intermittent vitamin D3 and/or low dose B12 supplementation if they had vitamin D or vitamin B12 deficiency. The control arm received prescribed dietary instruction only.

It was against this backdrop that this study was conducted to examine the sexual behaviors of HIV-infected men who have sex with men (MSM) in Jos, Plateau state, North Central Nigeria.

The T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin-3 (TIM-3)/galectin-9 (Gal-9) autocrine loop is an indispensable signaling in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells, which induces their self-renewal through activation of nuclear factor-kappa b (NF-kB) and β-catenin pathways. In this study, we evaluated the effects of oridonin and doxorubicin on the TIM-3/Gal-9 autocrine loop. We also evaluated oridonin anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties on U937 cells, as an AML cell line in comparison to doxorubicin as a common anthracycline drug for AML treatment.

Objectives: To determine IgG immune responses and hepatitis E virus (HEV) viral load, and to explore the associations with pregnancy.

Methods: A total of 121 HEV-infected women (57 pregnant, 64 non-pregnant) were analysed. Quantitative reverse transcription PCR (RT-qPCR) was done for 78 HEV IgM-positive patients to determine viral load, and Sanger sequencing was performed for 62 HEV-RNA-positive patients to confirm genotyping.
