Group II C-type lectin domain (CTLD) containing receptors belong to a large family of pattern recognition receptors which mainly act on the innate immunity. They are structurally related and consist of a cytoplasmic immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibitory motif (ITIM) and a single extracellular CTLD. Although they have been described in teleost fish, their involvement in immune responses is not well understood.

Background: The use of complementary and alternative medicines(CAM) is on the increase globally particularly among those with chronic medical conditions. Imperatively, the treatment outcomes of management of chronic illness is hinged on adherence to prescribed conventional treatment with little or no attention paid to the intent to use or concomitant use of alternative medicines in most treatment settings. Hence, this study assessed the preference for CAM and its predictors as among patients on long-term treatment in Jos University Teaching Hospital.

Background: The transcription factor NF-κB drives neoplastic progression of many cancers including primary brain tumors (glioblastoma [GBM]). Precise therapeutic modulation of NF-κB activity can suppress central oncogenic signaling pathways in GBM, but clinically applicable compounds to achieve this goal have remained elusive.

Methods: In a pharmacogenomics study with a panel of transgenic glioma cells, we observed that NF-κB can be converted into a tumor suppressor by the non-psychotropic cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD).

Background: Oncogenic Kras initiates and drives carcinogenesis in the pancreas by complex signaling networks, including activation of the NFκB pathway. Although recent evidence has shown that oncogenic gains in Nfκb2 collaborate with Kras in the carcinogenesis, no data at the level of genetics for the contribution of Nfκb2 is available so far.

Methods: We used Nfkb2 knock-out mice to decipher the role of the gene in Kras-driven carcinogenesis in vivo.

Worldwide, millets are regarded as a significant grain, however, they are the least exploited. Millet grain is abundant in nutrients and health-beneficial phenolic compounds, making it suitable as food and feed. The diverse content of nutrients and phenolic compounds present in finger and pearl millet are good indicators that the variety of millet available is important when selecting it for use as food or feed.

The pro-poor growth and environmental sustainability are the twin agendas widely discussed in environmental science literature. The technology-embodied growth helps to attain both agendas through knowledge sharing and technology transfer, which trickle down to the poor income group and improve their living standards. Hence, the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) is deemed crucial in boosting economic growth and is under deep consideration to establish its role in reducing poverty and environmental pollution.

Background Inappropriate medication dosing can cause adverse drug reactions or ineffective therapy due to declined renal function in patients with renal insufficiency. This necessitates proper renal dose adjustment. This study was proposed to evaluate medication dosage adjustment in hospitalized chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as superoxide (O2-) generated by NAD(P)H oxidases have emerged as important molecules in blood pressure regulation. This study investigated the effect of apocynin and catalase on blood pressure and renal haemodynamic and excretory function in an L-NAME induced hypertension model. Forty Male Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats (n=8 per group) were treated with either: vehicle (WKY-C); L-NAME (WKY-L, 15 mg/kg/day in drinking fluid); WKY-L given apocynin to block NAD(P)H oxidase (WKY-LApo, 73 mg/kg/day in drinking water.

Possible high biodeterioration of the microorganisms due to their metabolic pathway and activities on stone materials causes solemn problems in cultural heritage. Different kinds of laboratory-scale methods have been used for the reduction of microbial growth, that is, chemical, mechanical, and physical, which are cost-effective and not ecofriendly. In the current study, an ecofriendly approach utilizing silver nanoparticles were synthesized using sheep blood serum.

Chemotherapeutic drugs kill cancer cells or control their progression all over the patient's body, while radiation- and surgery-based treatments perform in a particular site. Based on their mechanisms of action, they are classified into different groups, including alkylating substrates, antimetabolite agents, anti-tumor antibiotics, inhibitors of topoisomerase I and II, mitotic inhibitors, and finally, corticosteroids. Although chemotherapeutic drugs have brought about more life expectancy, two major and severe complications during chemotherapy are chemoresistance and tumor relapse.

Case Report: A 76-year-old Caucasian woman with a history of previous BCCs excised from the head and legs was referred from the dermatology team with a biopsy proven superficial BCC to the left palm. The patient had presented to the dermatology team with the same lesion 7 years prior to the definitive diagnosis. The lesion was described as 27 × 15 mm scaly, poorly-defined, plaque-like lesion to the central palm.

Article Synopsis
  • Coronary artery disease, a leading cause of death globally and in Pakistan, particularly affects individuals with diabetes, prompting a study on long-term outcomes of those undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI).
  • The study included 200 patients with stable ischemic heart disease, comparing outcomes between diabetic and non-diabetic patients over one year after PCI, focusing on major events like death and revascularization.
  • Despite some differences in characteristics and complications, the study found that both groups had favorable in-hospital and long-term outcomes, indicating PCI's effectiveness regardless of diabetes status.

Ruxolitinib is the first janus kinase 1 (JAK1) and JAK2 inhibitor that was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) agency for the treatment of myeloproliferative neoplasms. The drug targets the JAK/STAT signalling pathway, which is critical in regulating the gliogenesis process during nervous system development. In the study, we assessed the effect of non-maternal toxic dosages of ruxolitinib (0-30 mg/kg/day between E7.

The T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin-3 (TIM-3)/galectin-9 (Gal-9) autocrine loop is an indispensable signaling in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells, which induces their self-renewal through activation of nuclear factor-kappa b (NF-kB) and β-catenin pathways. In this study, we evaluated the effects of oridonin and doxorubicin on the TIM-3/Gal-9 autocrine loop. We also evaluated oridonin anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties on U937 cells, as an AML cell line in comparison to doxorubicin as a common anthracycline drug for AML treatment.
