Unlabelled: Sitosterol is the most abundant plant sterol found in our diet. Sitosterolemia (OMIM 210250), also known as phytosterolaemia, is a rare autosomal recessive disease caused by the inability to efficiently excrete plant sterol, and is characterized by cutaneous xanthomas and accelerated atherosclerosis. Sitosterolaemia is caused by homozygous or compound heterozygous mutations in either ABCG5 or ABCG8 (both on chromosome 2p21), which encode the sterol efflux transporter ABCG5 (sterolin-1) and ABCG8 (sterolin-2), respectively.

Linezolid Toxicity and Mitochondrial Susceptibility: A Novel Neurological Complication in a Lebanese Patient.

The recent rise in the use of linezolid to treat a variety of resistant pathogens has uncovered many side effects. Some patients develop lactic acidosis, myelosuppression, optic or peripheral neuropathies, and myopathies. We evaluated an elderly patient who presented to the Emergency Room with linezolid toxicity and a novel neurologic complication characterized by bilateral globi pallidi necrosis.

Characterisation of fucoidan extracted from Malaysian Sargassum binderi.

Fucoidan is a sulphated polysaccharide that consists mainly of fucose, normally found in brown seaweeds. In this study, fucoidan was extracted from Sargassum binderi (Fsar) from Malaysia and subsequently characterised. The chemical characteristics of Fsar were found to be different than those of commercial food grade fucoidan (Fysk) and those of previously studied fucoidans.

Design: -Sixty-six G3EC cases were identified from pathology archives of Wayne State University (WSU, Detroit, Michigan) (general surgical pathology sign-out) and 65 from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK, New York, New York) (gynecologic pathology focused sign-out).

We measured the perceived speed and contrast of patterns in peripheral vision relative to foveal patterns for a range of eccentricities at both mesopic and photopic levels. The results indicate that perceived speed varies with eccentricity, speed, and luminance. At high (photopic) luminance, patterns appear slower when viewed peripherally rather than foveally, but at low (mesopic) luminance fast-moving patterns can appear faster when viewed peripherally.
