Introduction Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a preventable cause of patient morbidity and mortality among hospitalised patients. VTE events have a high incidence among orthopaedic patients, who routinely receive chemical thromboprophylaxis in the form of heparin, warfarin, antiplatelet agents or direct oral anticoagulants. These can be associated with adverse events, most commonly bleeding or heparin-induced thrombocytopenia.

Article Synopsis
  • Surgical site infections (SSIs) are a common complication after spinal surgery, typically occurring within 30 days, with an overall incidence of about 3.1%.
  • The study aimed to assess whether the use of closed incision negative pressure therapy (ciNPT), specifically PICO dressings, could reduce the rate of SSIs in spinal surgery patients compared to standard dressings.
  • Results showed no significant difference in SSI rates between patients with PICO dressings and those with standard occlusive dressings; both groups experienced similar outcomes regarding complications and rates of return to the operating theatre.

This paper delves into the significance of imaging in the diagnosis, aetiology and therapeutic guidance of heart failure, aiming to facilitate early referral and improve patient outcomes. Imaging plays a crucial role not only in assessing left ventricular ejection fraction, but also in characterising the underlying cardiac abnormalities and reaching a specific diagnosis. By providing valuable data on cardiac structure, function and haemodynamics, imaging helps diagnose the condition, evaluate haemodynamic status and, consequently, identify the underlying pathophysiological phenotype, as well as stratifying the risk for outcomes.

Background: Robotic assisted surgery (RAS) has seen significant advancement in many surgical specialties, although the application of robotics in plastic and reconstructive surgery remains to be widely established. This systematic review aims to assess the role of RAS in plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Methods: The review protocol was published and registered a priori as CRD42024507420.

The dorsoventral gradient of BMP signaling plays an essential role in embryonic patterning. Zinc Finger SWIM-Type Containing 4 (zswim4) is expressed in the Spemann-Mangold organizer at the onset of Xenopus gastrulation and is then enriched in the developing neuroectoderm at the mid-gastrula stages. Knockdown or knockout of zswim4 causes ventralization.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the evolutionary role of the zinc-finger SWIM domain-containing protein family (ZSWIM) in embryonic development across humans, mice, and zebrafish, identifying multiple homologous genes in each species.
  • - RNA sequencing and analysis revealed diverse expression patterns of ZSWIM genes in different tissues, suggesting specific roles in embryogenesis, with some genes showing maternal expression and others having dynamic patterns during development.
  • - The research establishes a basis for further exploration of the ZSWIM family's functions, aiming to better understand how these genes contribute to embryo formation and development.

Article Synopsis
  • The assessment of food quality is crucial for maintaining standards, extending shelf life, and ensuring consistent taste, especially for rice, a staple for half of the global population, with Pakistan being a major exporter.
  • This study introduces 'National Grain Tech', an advanced desktop application utilizing computer vision and machine learning for efficient rice quality evaluation based on seven features across six rice types.
  • Testing over three months in rice factories showed remarkable accuracy rates, achieving 99% for key quality metrics and outperforming previous methods that focused on fewer features for a single rice type.

Background: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common nerve entrapment neuropathy caused by compression of median nerve at wrist as it passes through Osseo fibrous canal known as carpal tunnel. Epidemiological statistics shows one in every ten people develops the disease at any stage of life. CTS mostly affect females than males with mean age of 50.

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular (CV) events and hospitalization for heart failure (HF) in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Using CV MRI (CMR) and P-MRS in a longitudinal cohort study, we aimed to investigate the effects of the selective SGLT2 inhibitor empagliflozin on myocardial energetics and cellular volume, function, and perfusion. Eighteen patients with T2D underwent CMR and P-MRS scans before and after 12 weeks' empagliflozin treatment.

Objective: To explore cardiovascular risk factors in people with newly-diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Methods: The cross-sectional, prospective, multicentre, study was conducted from June 2014 till July 2015 at family practice clinics in 27 cities across Pakistan, and comprised individuals aged 30-50 years diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus within the preceding six months. Laboratory investigations were conducted at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Lahore, and Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi.
