Nurse leadership: Sustaining a culture of safety.

Background: Nurse leaders are essential to manage nursing practices that affect patient safety; therefore, they must create and sustain a sound safety culture in a diverse cultural environment.

Aim: To describe the specific actions required by nurse leadership to enhance the sustainability of a safety culture in hospitals and among a diverse nursing team, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

Setting: Two hospitals in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were selected purposively, based on the diversity of the nursing team.

Treating substance-using women and their children in public housing: preliminary evaluation findings.

The Key West Housing Authority created SafePort, a residential substance abuse treatment program within public housing to provide drug treatment to parenting women. All family members-women, children, and significant others-receive comprehensive assessments to determine appropriate therapeutic interventions to resolve their problems. Preliminary evaluation findings suggest that women who participate with their children are more likely to remain drug free than are those who participated without their children.

Amaranthus retroflexus (redroot pigweed) poisoning in cattle.

Amaranthus retroflexus (redroot pigweed)-induced nephrotoxicity was diagnosed in 6 herds of cattle from 3 counties in southwest Missouri. Forty-eight cows and calves died and another 35 were clinically affected. Serum urea nitrogen concentration, determined in 4 affected calves, was between 55 and 284 mg/dl, and serum creatinine concentration was between 6.

Cefuroxime compared with penicillin for the treatment of gonorrhea.

One hundred seventy-eight men and women with acute gonorrhea were treated by intramuscular administration of cefuroxime. Use of 1 g of cefuroxime plus 1 g of probenecid gave a cure rate of 95.5%, which compared well with that of a standard treatment of 5 x 10(6) units of intramuscularly administered benzyl penicillin plus 1 g of probenecid.
